Gooch's Marines by Lou Giaffo Pdf

GOOCH¿S MARINES is a complete history of the United States Marine Corps, starting some forty years before the American Revolution, with a special regimental unit commissioned by colonial Governor William Gooch, under orders of King George II, to serve with the British Royal Marines, under the command of Lawrence Washington (elder half-brother of George Washington), in a campaign against the Spanish in the West Indies. Although they were formed in 1775, a year before the Declaration of Independence in 1776, they were not officially designated as U.S. Marines until commissioned by the Continental Congress and served as Continental U.S. Marines during the American Revolutionary War. The rest is history, as they established their military tradition, warriors generally conceded by military historians as second to none. It can also be said of U.S. Marine Corps that they were essentially the first U.S. Special Forces, selected originally for special assignments. They have prevailed in all of their military campaigns, despite the cost they¿ve had to pay in blood. The Marines proudly attribute this tradition to their superior command structure, starting with raw recruits in boot camp, along with its officer corps coming out of the U.S. Naval Academy, and ROTC college campuses. Some are selected from its enlisted ranks for U.S. Marine Corps Officer Training School, while others, who display leadership and courage under fire, are given battlefield commissions. About the Author: Born in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in Hartford, Connecticut, Lou Giaffo¿s life can be summed up in three words: art, teaching and writing. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years, Lou attended art school for three years. He then headed to New York City to pursue his career as a commercial artist. Lou enrolled in the local community college, Queensborough Community College for his associate¿s degree. He then went on to Queen¿s College, for his bachelor¿s degree, and then his mater¿s degree in education at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, while working full-time as an art specialist. Lou considers his greatest accomplishment to be his son, Jason Lou Giaffo.

Gooch's Regiment 1740-1742 by Lee G. Offen Pdf

In 1740 the British, having declared war on Spain in what was to become known as The War of Jenkin's Ear, chose to include American soldiers in the land force element of their expedition to the Caribbean. They fought as Marines at the siege of Cartagena, an occupation of a part of Cuba later to be known as Guantanamo Bay, as well as an assault on Portobello and finally an occupation of the Island of Ruatan. They were forced to serve as sailors, replacing an ever dwindling number of seamen suffering from life in the tropics in the days before modern medicine. The Regiment was disbanded in 1742 after having suffered as much as an 80% casualty rate, mostly due to disease. They Were America's First Marines! This is a first ever comprehensive regimental history of America's First Marines. Making extensive use of primary source material as well as secondary sources and analysis, this is an account of how the regiment was organized, equipped, who served and their exploits until the regiment was disbanded. From this account we get a glimpse of how these men, and their fellow colonists saw themselves, as they formed a separate identity ... becoming "Americans."

In 1740 Great Britain declared war on Spain and so began the War of Jenkin's Ear. The British decided to include American soldiers in the land force element of their Caribbean expedition, bringing Gooch's Regiment into being. The Regiment was nominally commanded by the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and composed of thirty-six companies raised in nine North American colonies. One of those companies was commanded by Lawrence Washington, the elder half brother of George Washington. They fought as Marines at the siege of Cartagena, an occupation of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, an assault on Portobello and finally an occupation of the Island of Ruatan. Reflecting the latest in research since the original 1981 edition, long considered the classic reference on marine plant life, thisnew edition's enhanced ecological perspective details the ongoingenvironmental challenges endured by these fragile life-forms.Viewing the structure and function of marine plant communities inthe context of abiotic (light, temperature, water movement, nutrients), biotic (photosynthesis, carbon fixation, competition, predation, symbiosis), and anthropogenic influences, the book moveslayer by layer through the ocean, capturing their photosyntheticand adaptive mechanisms. Pollution in the form of oil spills, heavyand radioactive metals, biological damage wrought from harvestingand aquaculture, and the harmful effects of ozone depletion andUV-B rays are detailed, along with the impact of environmentalfactors on morphological and anatomical adaptations. Biology of Bryozoans covers some of the unusual and even unique systems and aspects of bryozoans. The book discusses the gametogenesis of bryozoans; the brooding patterns of bryozoans; and the structure and classification of gymnolaemate larvae. The text also describes the metamorphosis, ancestrulae, and coloniality in bryozoan life cycles; the ultrastructure, mineralogy, and development of bryozoan skeletons; and polymorphism in marine bryozoans. Bryozoan feeding and culture; experimental techniques and culture methods; and the problem of the funiculi and the communications are also considered. The book further tackles the aging process in bryozoans; the bryozoan nervous system; and taxes and tropisms of bryozoans. The text also looks into the life strategies of bryozoans; the population genetics of bryozoans; and the adaptive model for the evolution of the ectoproct life cycle. Zoologists, marine biologists, and students taking related courses will find the book invaluable.
