Accounting for Goodwill by Andrea Beretta Zanoni Pdf

This book provides an illuminating analysis of Internally Generated Goodwill from a strategic point of view. The author launches his strategic analysis from a foundational understanding of Internally Generated Goodwill as determined largely in relationship to intangible resources and competitive differentials. Arguing that intangible resources are at the origin of competitive differential--and accordingly at the origin of the achievement of economic profit--the author shows how Internally Generated Goodwill can be considered as the economic expression of competitive differentials and, therefore, as the expression of the greater firm’s value that originates from those differentials. In addition to offering this innovative theoretical framework, the author develops a variety of practical tools for generating value estimates and value breakdowns of IIG. The masterful analysis provided here focuses on developing methods for identifying the elements that compose IIG and on achieving an accurate estimate of its value, ultimately seeking to evaluate the limitations and advantages of the existing variety of approaches to analyzing the constituent parts of IIG and to devise accounting practices that will help academics and professionals alike to obtain more significant and lucid results.

Double Accounting for Goodwill by Martin Bloom Pdf

Goodwill, sometimes purchased but often more significantly internally generated, is the major constituent of the value of many listed companies. Accounting aims to provide users of financial statements with useful information, and more than fifty current International Financial Reporting Standards prescribe accounting disclosure requirements in minute detail. However, these Standards dismiss internally generated goodwill with a single brief provision that it is not to be brought to account at all. The impairment regime now laid down for dealing with purchased goodwill contains severe flaws, while previous methods have also been found to be unsatisfactory. This book traces the history of the goodwill accounting controversy in detail and demonstrates that it has been a prime example of an issue ‘conceived in a way that it is in principle unsolvable’. It explores the problem of recognising the importance of goodwill as a whole and finding a way of presenting meaningful information regarding it in the context of the financial statements. The author’s proposed solution builds upon research undertaken and uses a Market Capitalization Statement, based on a modification of nineteenth century ‘double accounting’ in a modern context. Examples show that the proposed Market Capitalization Statement has the potential to provide significant information not currently available form conventional financial statements, which in turn are freed to present clearer information.

Goodwill in Passing Off by Ng, Catherine Pdf

The law of passing off protects traders from a form of misrepresentation that harms their goodwill, and consumers from the market distortion that may result. This carefully-crafted work seeks to delineate two intertwined aspects of goodwill: substantive and structural goodwill. It argues that the law of passing off should focus on protecting structural goodwill, and that this in turn allows traders’ authentic voices to help shape the substantive goodwill to attract custom for them in the marketplace.

From Goodwill to Grunge by Jennifer Le Zotte Pdf

In this surprising new look at how clothing, style, and commerce came together to change American culture, Jennifer Le Zotte examines how secondhand goods sold at thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales came to be both profitable and culturally influential. Initially, selling used goods in the United States was seen as a questionable enterprise focused largely on the poor. But as the twentieth century progressed, multimillion-dollar businesses like Goodwill Industries developed, catering not only to the needy but increasingly to well-off customers looking to make a statement. Le Zotte traces the origins and meanings of "secondhand style" and explores how buying pre-owned goods went from a signifier of poverty to a declaration of rebellion. Considering buyers and sellers from across the political and economic spectrum, Le Zotte shows how conservative and progressive social activists--from religious and business leaders to anti-Vietnam protesters and drag queens--shrewdly used the exchange of secondhand goods for economic and political ends. At the same time, artists and performers, from Marcel Duchamp and Fanny Brice to Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain, all helped make secondhand style a visual marker for youth in revolt.

Good Will Hunting by Ben Affleck,Matt Damon Pdf

As director Gus Van Sant observes in the introduction to Matt Damon's and Ben Affleck's screenplay Good Will Hunting, the two young actors somewhat resemble the characters they play in the film: they're best friends, and Affleck (who plays Chuckie) habitually chauffeurs Damon (Will), who doesn't drive. Van Sant says we can see how badly Damon drives by watching the film's last scene, in which he is actually driving the car with the camera mounted on it. But Damon and company write better than he drives; this script contains some of the boldest, best monologues since Pulp Fiction.Van Sant and cast member Robin Williams helped the young actors tame the tigers in their cranial tanks, trimming the script into a precision instrument. Though the stills from the film are not perfectly matched to their places in the script, this story remains as much a joy to read as it is towatch on the big screen.

Everything Good Will Come by Sefi Atta Pdf

Everything Good Will Come introduces an important new voice in contemporary fiction. With insight and a lyrical wisdom, Nigerian-born Sefi Atta has written a powerful and eloquent story set in her African homeland. It is 1971, a year after the Biafran War, and Nigeria is under military rule—though the politics of the state matter less than those of her home to Enitan Taiwo, an eleven-year-old girl tired of waiting for school to start. Will her mother, who has become deeply religious since the death of Enitan’s brother, allow her friendship with the new girl next door, the brash and beautiful Sheri Bakare? This novel charts the fate of these two African girls; one who is prepared to manipulate the traditional system and one who attempts to defy it. Written in the voice of Enitan, the novel traces this unusual friendship into their adult lives, against the backdrop of tragedy, family strife, and a war-torn Nigeria. In the end, Everything Good Will Come is Enitan’s story; one of a fiercely intelligent, strong young woman coming of age in a culture that still insists on feminine submission. Enitan bucks the familial and political systems until she is confronted with the one desire too precious to forfeit in the name of personal freedom: her desire for a child. Everything Good Will Come evokes the sights and smells of Africa while imparting a wise and universal story of love, friendship, prejudice, survival, politics, and the cost of divided loyalties.
