Red Meat Republic by Joshua Specht Pdf

"By the late nineteenth century, Americans rich and poor had come to expect high-quality fresh beef with almost every meal. Beef production in the United States had gone from small-scale, localized operations to a highly centralized industry spanning the country, with cattle bred on ranches in the rural West, slaughtered in Chicago, and consumed in the nation's rapidly growing cities. Red Meat Republic tells the remarkable story of the violent conflict over who would reap the benefits of this new industry and who would bear its heavy costs"--

Charles Goodnight by J. Evetts Haley Pdf

An exciting story of a Texas Ranger, adventurer, and immigration officer who became a symbol of his age while gambling with death in the wild frontier regions of Texas, Arizona, and Old and New Mexico. Charles Goodnight knew the West of Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Dick Wooton, St. Vrain, and Lucien Maxwell. He ranged a country as vast as Bridger ranged. He rode with the boldness of Fremont, guided by the craft of Carson. His vigorous zest for life enabled him to live intensely and amply, and in this book by J. Evetts Haley, himself no stranger to the West, provides a fully readable and important western biography, vividly told, thrilling, witty, and completely authentic.

Beyond the Goodnight Trail by Roy V. Gaston Pdf

PEACEMAKER AWARD WINNER When former Texas Ranger scout Pete Horse agrees to join his old friend Charlie Goodnight’s first trail drive across Texas to the New Mexico Bosque Redondo Navajo reservation, he knows the way will be fraught with danger. He expects to encounter bandits, hostile Comanche, bad weather and stampedes, and he’s not disappointed. He hadn’t been expecting the treacherous Comancheros, renegade Apache, and night riding gangs of unreconstructed Rebels seething with resentment, and all of them fighting over a thousand stolen Army rifles. When he’s forced to kill two men who are stealing his prized horse, Pete incurs the wrath of an ex-communicated religious zealot and his sect of trigger-happy disciples. The entire Texas Panhandle is about to erupt in a shooting war that could spread across the West. Riding up with old friends Bigfoot Wallace, Bass Reeves, Britt Johnson and more legendary men of the west, Pete still faces the longest odds of a long, turbulent life on the violent frontier. The Settlers' War by Gregory Michno Pdf

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton Press During the decades from 1820 to 1870, the American frontier expanded two thousand miles across the trans-Mississippi West. In Texas the frontier line expanded only about two hundred miles. The supposedly irresistible European force met nearly immovable Native American resistance, sparking a brutal struggle for possession of Texas’s hills and prairies that continued for decades. During the 1860s, however, the bloodiest decade in the western Indian wars, there were no large-scale battles in Texas between the army and the Indians. Instead, the targets of the Comanches, the Kiowas, and the Apaches were generally the homesteaders out on the Texas frontier, that is, precisely those who should have been on the sidelines. Ironically, it was these noncombatants who bore the brunt of the warfare, suffering far greater losses than the soldiers supposedly there to protect them. It is this story that The Settlers’ War tells for the first time.

Circle the Wagons! by Gregory F. Michno,Susan J. Michno Pdf

It’s a cinematic image as familiar as John Wayne’s face: a wagon train circling as a defensive maneuver against Indian attacks. This book examines actual and fictional wagon-train battles and compares them for realism. It also describes how fledgling Hollywood portrayed the concept of westward migration but, as the evolving industry became more accurate in historical detail, how filmmakers then lost sight of the big picture.

Rosalund's Raiders by Allan Ede Pdf

Wesley Hanson, an uninspired senior at Renton High School in Riverview, is attacked and badly beaten by a boy named B.J. and his Manglers, a notorious gang from the city's Southside. A friend of Wesley's tells him about Arthur Rosalund, an extremely rich man, who dreams of using his money and power to rid the world of gang violence. His gang, Rosalund's Raiders, will infiltrate other gangs and convince them that teaming up with his Raiders will assure them of a worthwhile future, filled with benefits, such as money, scholarships, and security. Wesley overcomes his fear of failing, and, after training vigorously in the martial arts, becomes a full-fledged Raider. His first mission is to contact Rufus Brown, the powerful head of the Rounders, and to convince him to bring fifty other gang leaders to Rosalund. While mixing with the Rounders, Wesley falls in love with Lisa, one of their members. She accompanies Wesley to a meeting of the warlords at Eagle Point Park. The gathering is interrupted by B.J. and his Manglers who are heavily armed and spoiling for blood. The police invade and, after a brutal confrontation, haul most of the gang members, including Wesley, to jail. Will Rosalund's dreams be thwarted? Will Wesley's love for Lisa jeopardize his commitment to Rosalund as one of his Raiders?

Sawyer Buchanon was against hiring private investigator Jade Warren. The escalating threats against his family’s construction business—and Sawyer in particular—don’t warrant that kind of expense. But everything she’s been led to believe about the smalltown Texas dynasty crumbles in the face of Sawyer’s decency and sweetness.
