Grammar of the Latin Language (Classic Reprint) by C. G. Zumpt Pdf

Excerpt from Grammar of the Latin Language The Latin language is so rich and happy in its organization, and has been so consistently developed by the energetic spirit of the Roman people as well as by the exquisite tact of the Roman authors, that a continued study of it is amply re warded. It is now upwards of thirty years that I have been before the public as a writer on Latin grammar*; my varied studies have always led me back to this subject, and I may truly declare, that during each fresh revision of my grammar, when I was engaged in incorporating with my system the observations I had made in the meantime, and in considering the doubts and objections which had been raised in my mind, I have become more and more convinced of the inexhaustible mine of human wisdom whichpresents itself in the language of a happily organized nation like the Romans. I am not speaking here of the accidental matter contained in a grammar, nor of the accumulation of similar passages, - it will afford far greater pleasure to the pupil to discover for himself in the authors whose works he is reading passages which confirm or illustrate the rules he has learned, - nor of niceties of expression, for these are curiosities rather than any thing else, but I mean real philological discoveries and peculiarities, which arise from the organic structure of the language, derive their explanation from it, and in return throw light upon the whole fabric of the lan guage itself; and the result of all this is, that the general principles are better ascertained and established. It is owing to these continued studies that even the present translation of the ninth edition of. My Latin grammar has been enriched by some not unimportant improvements, which I have communi cated in ms. To Dr. Schmitz, and it will henceforth be our united endeavour to remedy every deficiency that may yet be found. With regard to their classification, it is only necessary here to observe, that l, m, n, r are called liquids (liquidate), and the rest mutes (mntae), with the exception of s, which, being a sibilant (littera sibilans), is of a peculiar nature. The mutes may again be classified, with reference to the organ by which they are pronounced, into labials (v, 6, p, f), palatals (g, c, If, ya), and linguals (d, t). A Grammar of the Latin Language by E. A. Andrews Pdf

Excerpt from A Grammar of the Latin Language: For the Use of Schools and Colleges Tmc Grammar here presented to the public originated in I design, formed several years since, of preparing a new edition of Adam's Latin Grammar, with such additions and corrections as the existing state of classical learning plainly demanded. We had not proceeded far in the execution of this purpose, before we were impressed with the conviction, which our subw quent researches continually confirmed, that the defects in that manual were so numerous, and of so fundamental a character, that they could not be removed without a radical change in the plan Of the work. The Principles of Latin and English Grammar by Alexander Adam Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles of Latin and English Grammar: Designed to Facilitate the Study of Both Languages, by Connecting Them Together As language is regular in its general structure, rules must no doubt be useful to assist us in understanding it. We first learn to speak from imitation. We use the expressions which we hear from others. But when we have once gained a cer tain stock of words, we employ them according to general rules. When a child, for instance, has occasion to speak of two persons, he will say, two mans, instead of two men because he learns the general method of forming the plural, before he attends to particular exceptions. The same may be observed of a person who endeavours to acquire any foreign language. Memory furnishes us with proper terms to ex press our thoughts, but judgment must be exerted in adapt mg these to particular circumstances. First Latin Grammar (Classic Reprint) by M. C. Macmillan Pdf

Excerpt from First Latin Grammar IN this short Grammar of the Latin Accidence I have endeavoured to arrange the paradigms in such a way as to give some hint of the connection between the different forms, Without departing from the traditional number and order of Declensions and Conjugations. In the arrange ment by stems I have closely followed Mr. Roby, even in the somewhat uncertain distinction between consonant and i-stems in the Third Declension pf Nouns, feeling that some division is necessary, and that his is more satisfactory than any other. A Latin Grammar (Classic Reprint) by Charles E. Bennett Pdf

Excerpt from A Latin Grammar The present book is a revision of my Latin Grammar originally published in 1895. Wherever greater accuracy or precision of statement seemed possible, I have endeavored to secure this. The rules for syllable division have been changed and made to conform to the prevailing practice of the Romans themselves. In the Perfect Subjunctive Active, the endings z's, imam, -z'zz's are now marked long. The theory of vowel length before the suffixes -gnus, -gna, -gnum, and also before j, has been discarded. In the Syntax I have recognized a special category of Ablative of Association, and have abandoned the original doctrine as to the force of tenses in the Prohibitive.
