A Dime’s Worth of Paper Plates: One Young Man’s Journey from the Great Depression through World War II by L.D. (Duke) Hobbs Pdf

In A Dime's Worth of Paper Plates, the author calls himself "a typical guy who became a teenager during the Depression years and became a man during World War II." Duke begins with his ancestors' history in Norway and their emigration to Iowa in 1892. His grandfather acquired a number of farms in the Norwegian community in central Iowa, and the author lived on one of these farms as a child. His childhood is idyllic, though the Depression and the Dust Bowl years take their toll on the adults in the community. His stepfather takes a job in Pecos, Texas in 1936 and the family adjusts to a new life in this little "cow town." Following a year of college, Duke joins the army in 1944 and after training at Ft. Hood is sent overseas for two years. He serves in Company "F," 314th Infantry, 79th Division in the European Theater. After the war, he returns to Texas A&M to complete his degree. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the air Force, he serves four years as an intelligence officer during the Korean War.

In the Blink of an Eye by Judy Cooley Pdf

My parents were great influences in my life. From my mom, I learned optimism. I never saw my mom in a bad mood. She was always happy and looked at the good side of everyone and everything. When she wanted a fireplace, she substituted as a mail carrier and after a year, was able to buy it. Once when thinking she and Dad might get a new car, a fire prevented it. Dad was a logger, and the logs on the cold deck of the lumber mill had burned up, which prevented him from paying his workers with the money he would have received. Neither parent mentioned it to us kids, and nothing changed in their behavior. They never talked to us kids about money, having it or not having it. Mom cooked, sewed our clothes, painted the walls inside our home, and always found a way to make something out of nothing. Our parents took in an AFS student: Olga, Job Corps girls, Japanese students, and others, which had a big influence on me. I remember her sending packages to her pen pals in Europe after WWII. Family was the most important to her. Mom took us to visit her parents and their siblings and her siblings. We learned stories about all of them. We lived minutes from my father's family and got to know and love them, too. So many stories to tell. In fact, when my little granddaughter, Natasha, spent the night with me, she always asked for the stories. What fun! She always asked for the stories about the people (the relatives).

The Years Come and Go by Judythe Pearson Patberg Pdf

The authors goal in writing this book was to preserve the contents of her mothers journals and calendars, as well as her reflections about life and spiritual matters, so that future generations can have a glimpse of the everyday life of Margaret Pearson, a woman who loved God, her family, and the farm she lived in for seventy years. The Years Come and Go is primarily a contribution to a family legacy, but it will also be of interest to anyone who enjoys reading memoirs about the ordinary lives of extraordinary people. Margaret Pearson wrote as she lived, with a soft heart for all living things, a profound trust in God for His mercy, and boundless gratitude for the people in her life. This book could also serve as a reference guide for settling disputes about the weather in Northern Minnesota on a particular day during the years of 1989 to 2015.

The Columnist by Donald A. Ritchie Pdf

"In the Washington Merry-Go-Round, a nationally syndicated newspaper column that appeared in hundreds of papers from 1932 to 1969, as well as on weekly radio and television programs, the investigative journalist Drew Pearson revealed news that public officials tried to suppress. He disclosed policy disputes and political spats, exposed corruption, attacked bigotry, and promoted social justice. He pumped up some political careers and destroyed others. Presidents, prime ministers, and members of Congress repeatedly called him a liar, and he was sued for libel more often than any other journalist, but he won most of his cases by proving the accuracy of his charges. Pearson dismissed most official news as propaganda and devoted his column to reporting what officials were doing behind closed doors. He broke secrets-even in wartime-and revealed classified information. Fellow journalists credited him with knowing more dirt about more people in Washington than even the FBI and compared his efforts to Daniel Ellsberg with the Pentagon Papers or Edward Snowden with WikiLeaks, except that he did it daily. The Columnist examines how Pearson managed to uncover secrets so successfully and why government efforts to find his sources proved so unsuccessful. Drawing on a half century of archival evidence it assesses his contributions as a muckraker by verifying or refuting both his accusations and his accusers"--
