This monograph presents the geoscientific context arising in decorrelative gravitational exploration to determine the mass density distribution inside the Earth. First, an insight into the current state of research is given by reducing gravimetry to mathematically accessible, and thus calculable, decorrelated models. In this way, the various unresolved questions and problems of gravimetry are made available to a broad scientific audience and the exploration industry. New theoretical developments will be given, and innovative ways of modeling geologic layers and faults by mollifier regularization techniques are shown. This book is dedicated to surface as well as volume geology with potential data primarily of terrestrial origin. For deep geology, the geomathematical decorrelation methods are to be designed in such a way that depth information (e.g., in boreholes) may be canonically entered. Bridging several different geo-disciplines, this book leads in a cycle from the potential measurements made by geoengineers, to the cleansing of data by geophysicists and geoengineers, to the subsequent theory and model formation, computer-based implementation, and numerical calculation and simulations made by geomathematicians, to interpretation by geologists, and, if necessary, back. It therefore spans the spectrum from geoengineering, especially geodesy, via geophysics to geomathematics and geology, and back. Using the German Saarland area for methodological tests, important new fields of application are opened, particularly for regions with mining-related cavities or dense development in today's geo-exploration.

A General Meeting of the lAG was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, to commemorate its 125th Anniversary. The Edinburgh meeting, which attracted 360 scientific delegates and 80 accompanying persons from 44 countries, was hosted jointly by the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh. The scientific part of the program, which was held in the Appleton Tower of the University, included the following five symposia: Symposium 101 Global and Regional Geodynamics Symposium 102 GPS and Other Radio Tracking Systems Symposium 103 Gravity, Gradiometry and Gravimetry Symposium 104 Sea Surface Topography, the Geoid and Vertical Datums Symposium 105 Earth Rotation and Coordinate Reference Frames All together there were 90 oral and 160 poster presentatio'ls. The program was arranged to prevent any overlapping of oral presentations, and thus enabled delegates to participate in all the sessions. The 125th Anniversary Ceremony took place on August 7, 1989, in the noble surroundings of the McEwan Hall where, 53 years earlier, Vening-Meinesz gave one of the two Union Lectures at the 6th General Assembly of the IUGG. The Ceremony commenced with welcome speeches by the British hosts. An interlude of traditional Scottish singing and dancing was followed by the Presidential Address given by Professor Ivan Mueller, on 125 years of international cooperation in geodesy. The Ceremony continued with greetings from representatives of sister societies, and was concluded by the presentation of the Levallois Medal to Professor Arne Bjerhammar.

One of the themes in current geophysical development is the bringing together of the results of observations made on the surface and those made in the subsurface. Several benefits result from this association. The detailed geological knowledge obtained in the subsurface can be extrapolated for short distances with more confidence when the geologi cal detail has been related to well-integrated subsurface and surface geophysical data. This is of value when assessing the characteristics of a partially developed petroleum reservoir. Interpretation of geophysical data is generally improved by the experience of seeing the surface and subsurface geophysical expression of a known geological configuration. The lAG International Symposium on Gravity, Geoid, and Space Missions 2004 (GGSM2004) was lield in the beautiful city of Porto, Portugal, from 30 August to 3 September 2004. This symposium encompassed the themes of Commission 2 (Gravity Field) of the newly structured lAG, as well as interdisciplinary topics related to geoid and gravity modeling, with special attention given to the current and planned gravi- dedicated satellite missions. The symposium also followed in the tradition of mid-term meetings that were held between the quadrennial joint meetings of the International Geoid and Gravity Commissions. The previous mid-term meetings were the International Symposia on Gravity, Geoid, and Marine Geodesy (Tokyo, 1996), and Gravity, Geoid, and Geodynamics (Banff, 2000). GGSM2004 aimed to bring together scientists from different areas in the geosciences, working with gravity and geoid related problems, both from the theoretical and practical points of view. Topics of interest included the integration of heterogeneous data and contributions from satellite and airborne techniques to the study of the spatial and temporal variations of the gravity field. In addition to the special focus on the CHAMP, GRACE, and GOCE satellite missions, attention was also directed toward projects addressing topographic and ice field mapping using SAR, LIDAR, and laser altimetry, as well as missions and studies related to planetary geodesy.

A world-wide estimate of the gravity field, based on all available gravimetry and extended by Markov analysis using correlation with elevation, was combined with an estimate of the geoid based on astro-geodetic data covering 19% of the earth and with secular and long period variations of the 1957 Beta and 1958 Beta satellite orbits, into a generalization of least-squares adjustments taking correlation into account. The value obtained for the quadratic sum indicated that the estimates of variance and covariance should be increased about 44%. The results obtained include: Equatorial radius, 6378163 + or - 21 m; Flattening, 1/298.24 + or - 0.01; Equatorial gravity, 978043.6 + or - 1.2 milligals (Potsdam system); Datum shifts (with three-dimensional standard deviation) for the Americas system, + or - 35 m; Europe-Africa-Siberia-India system, + or - 38 m; Japan-Korea-Manchuria system, + or - 68 m; Coefficients in the spherical harmonic expression of the gravity field up to the 8th degree; and World-wide geoid heights, with standard deviations varying from + or - 10 m to + or - 22 m.
