Greener textiles in hospitals by Watson, David ,Fisher-Bogason, Rikke Pdf

This guide is aimed at procurers in the Nordic healthcare sector who are responsible for purchasing textile products and services and assists them in developing processes for establishing suitable and practicable environmental criteria in tender documents. Procurers can learn which aspects in the production and care of textiles have most environmental significance and how these can be addressed through criteria. They can learn more about about the role of ecolabels in procurement and can find links to ready-to-use criteria, and other useful information from national procurement agencies. The guide has been developed in cooperation with a Nordic Network of Procurers in the Health Sector as part of an initiative under the Nordic Action Plan for Sustainable Fashion and Textiles “Well-dressed in a Clean Environment”: It is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Cost and EU Public Procurement Law by Marta Andhov,Roberto Caranta,Anja Wiesbrock Pdf

Public institutions, companies and governments in the EU and around the world are increasingly engaging in sustainable public procurement – a broad concept that must consider the three pillars of economic equality, social welfare and public health and environmental responsibility when designing public tenders and finalizing government contracts. This book contributes to the development of life-cycle criteria tools and methodologies for public procurement in the EU. It collects both sector-crossing contributions analysing the most relevant theoretical and legal aspects, including both EU law and contract theory, and sector-specific contributions relating to some of the most important sustainable goods and services markets. The book starts with a chapter that discusses the different approaches to including sustainability considerations in buying decisions by both private and public purchasers, and then goes on to examine the EU law on LCC and how it is implemented in different Member States. These chapters address the challenges in balancing economic and sustainability objectives under EU internal market law. One chapter develops the analysis with specific reference to public-private partnership. Another chapter elaborates how multi-stakeholders’ cooperation is necessary to develop LCC, based on a case study of a lighting services procurement. Three sector-specific studies relating to social housing, textile and clothing and IT close the book. With contributors from a range of backgrounds including law, business, management, engineering and policy development, this interdisciplinary book provides the first comprehensive study on LCC within the framework of EU public procurement law.

Stimulating Textile-to-Textile Recycling by David Watson,Maria Elander,Anja Gylling,Tova Andersson,Pirjo Heikkilä Pdf

Extending the active lifetimes of textile products should be prioritised in efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of textile production. However, once textiles are worn out, recycling them back into new textile products is environmentally advantageous compared to incineration or landfill. A number of Nordic brands have been venturing out on pathways towards textile-to-textile recycling both through designing for ease of recycling and thus increase potential supply, and through using recycled materials in new products. This report compares the experiences of eleven of these and documents their motivation, challenges they’ve experienced and the strategies they’ve used to overcome these. The report is published in parallel with a case wallet and aims to inspire other brands to engage in closed loop thinking.

Recycling from Waste in Fashion and Textiles by Pintu Pandit,Shakeel Ahmed,Kunal Singha,Sanjay Shrivastava Pdf

The alarming level of greenhouse gases in the environment, fast depleting natural resources and the increasing level of industrial effluents, have made every single manufacturing activity come under the scrutiny of sustainability. When all kinds of waste such as clothes, furniture, carpets, televisions, shoes, paper, food wastes etc. end up in the landfill, only a few of them are naturally decomposed and thus a large majority remains as non-biodegradable. It is for this reason, efforts are concentrated to reduce the burden on earth by this waste, and as far as used textile products are concerned, there are now attempts to recycle or up-cycle. This book addresses the role of sustainability by using textile waste in fashion and textiles with respect to manufacturing, materials, as well as the economic and business challenges and opportunities it poses. This wide-ranging book comprises 19 chapters on the various topics including: Solutions for sustainable fashion and textile industry Agro and bio waste in the fashion industry Innovating fashion brands by using textile waste Waste in handloom textiles Business paradigm shifting: 21st century fashion from recycling and upcycling Utilization of natural waste for sustainable textile coloration Circular economy in fashion and textile from waste Future pathways of waste utilization for fashion Sustainable encapsulation of natural dyes from Plant waste for textiles Agro-waste applications for bio-remediation of textile effluent

Medical Textiles by Holly Morris,Richard Murray Pdf

This textbook aims to ensure that advances in medical textiles are addressed and that recent developments are able to be appreciated and understood not only by medical practitioners and healthcare personnel but also by textile scientists and technologists. The idea is to stimulate collaborative research and development in the field of medical textiles and to equip researchers with an understanding of the steps they need to take to ensure that their efforts, be they to develop new devices for implantation or items for external application, are carried out in such a way as to improve their effectiveness and enhance the prospects for their implementation. Attention is drawn to the need to improve outcomes in the practical setting and to guidance on the detailed planning required prior to engaging in experimental work. Standard tests can help researchers to monitor performance, but for some important applications such as those required to demonstrate antimicrobial and fluid-repellent performance in most items of protective wear, standard tests consistently fall seriously short in terms of predicting how well they might work in the practical setting. Guidance is therefore given for their further development. Chapters within the textbook cover: The history of innovation within medical textiles with particular attention given to key concepts of the latter part of the 19th Century and subsequent associated developments. Textile and polymer science underpinning fibres, fabrics, nano-fibre technology and the functional finishes that can be applied to enhance the performance of medical textile products. Woven, knitted, nonwoven and braided fabrics and the key performance characteristics of each fabric type which make them particularly suited to specific medical textile roles such as mesh, grafts, filtration and scaffolds for tissue engineering. Implantable medical textiles, non-implantable medical textiles, health and hygiene products and extracorporeal devices that use textile products. Legislative requirements for medical devices. The design of experiments and suitability for purpose of textile test methods. Case studies to illustrate how medical textiles are applied in practice. The book provides essential reading for textile professionals, biomedical engineers, and others involved in the research, design and engineering of medical and healthcare appliances, and for those employed in the medical profession wishing to gain new insights into the wealth of materials at their disposal.
