Geburtstag von Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths sollte den Ideen GutsMuths' wieder neues Leben einhauchen. Denn anlässlich des Festaktes ,,250 Jahre GutsMuths" am 9. August 2009 in Schnepfenthal, schien der bedeutende Reformpädagoge aktueller denn je. Das Leben und Wirken von J. Chr. F. GutsMuths geriet zwar im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert nicht in Vergessenheit, aber viel mehr Achtung und Würdigung galten dem Verdienst von Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, dem die unmittelbaren Einführung des Turnens zugesprochen wurde. Umso sonderbarer schien die Nachricht des Landessportbundes Thüringens: ,,Thüringen hat ab sofort ein Copyright mehr. Der wahre Turnvater kommt aus Thüringen!" (Vgl. Juli/August 2009, 3). Sowohl GutsMuths als auch Jahn sollte laut Prof. Dr. Gudrun Doll-Tepper, Vizepräsidentin des Deutschen Olympischen Sportbundes, der Ehrentitel anerkannt werden. Warum diese Erkenntnis 250 Jahre dauern musste, soll nicht Gegenstand meiner Arbeit sein. Viel wichtiger scheint mir, dass wir nach 250 Jahren, insbesondere in diesem Jahr, einem Deutschen gedenken, dem für seine richtungweisenden Impulse in der Schulsportentwicklung Würde gebührt. Auch ich nehme dieses Jubiläum zum Anlass, das Gedankengut, die Lehren und Ansichten von J. Ch. F. GutsMuths in Erinnerung zu rufen und dessen Verdienste im Hinblick auf unseren heutigen Schulsportunterricht auf Aktualität zu hinterfragen.

Whether it is our love of chance and vicarious thrill, our need to release anxiety and aggression, or our appreciation of the arc traced by a ball at a crucial moment – sports draw us in. The Allure of Sports in Western Culture contributes to contemporary debates about the attraction of sports in the West by providing a historical grounding as well as theoretical perspectives and contextualization. Bringing together the work of literary theorists, historians, and athletes, the volume’s dual emphasis allows us to better understand the historical and ideological reasons for the changing nature of sports’ allure from Ancient Greece and Rome to the modern Olympics. The findings show that allure is shaped by larger forces such as poverty, wealth, and status; changing moral standards; and political and cultural indoctrination. On the other hand, personal and psychological factors play an equally important, if less tangible role: our love for scandal, the seduction of deception and violence, and the physiological intoxication of watching and participating in sports keep us hooked. At the heart of the volume lies the tension between our love of sport and our knowledge of its only barely hidden cruelty, exploitation, and manipulation.

Beyond the Gymnasium is the first systematic effort to examine the history of the body in modern Germany. By looking into medical dietetics, walking, dancing, gymnastics, cholera, and classrooms, Heikki Lempa reconstructs the ways the middle-class body became a source of political and social autonomy and a medium of social interaction. During the first two decades of the nineteenth century, German physicians defined the middle class body as qualitatively different from the lower class body. This belief was supported by a contemporary science known as dietetics. Lempa provides a comprehensive history and analysis of this science. Beyond the Gymnasium also analyzes the social implications of court dancing and gymnastics. In the eighteenth century, the French court dances set the standards of upper and middle class conduct. In the 1810s, the gymnastics movement challenged this tradition by propagating vigorous physical exercise and egalitarian social interaction. In 1819, the ban on gymnastics contributed to the rapid spread of dancing clubs, ballrooms, public promenades, and spas; the old forms of bodily interaction underwent a renaissance. These two trends--the quest for bodily autonomy and the continuity of traditional bodily conduct--played an important role in the status of the German middle class in the nineteenth century. In social interaction, it continued to cultivate those forms that had endowed the Old Regime with its specific character and flair. To explain this, the book explores the forms of social recognition in dancing, greeting, and walking and discovers that the German middle class displayed an aptitude for social recognition of asymmetrical relationships.
