Handbook of Polar Discoveries (Classic Reprint) by A. W. Greely Pdf

Excerpt from Handbook of Polar Discoveries Exploration of the Arctic world has fitly illustrated the truth of Benjamin Franklin's aphorism, that 'an investment in knowledge always pays the best interest;' for during the past two centuries that dreary and seemingly unproductive region of our globe has yielded commercial materials far exceeding a thousand million dollars in value. This fact alone is sufficient answer to the utilitarian objection to Arctic research; and accurate knowledge of Arctic lands is well worth the having, for purely practical purposes if no other, because the available wealth of this northern world is by no means exhausted. It was commercial interest, indeed, which gave the inception to Arctic investigation, in the search for a northwest passage from Europe to the Orient; and the progress of this search alone led to most important geographic discoveries. But while Arctic voyagers have penetrated to latitude 83 24', within about 450 miles of the geographic pole, an area of the north polar regions exceeding three million square miles remains unexplored. A Short History of Polar Exploration by Nick Rennison Pdf

According to Apsley Cherry-Garrard, one of the men who went to Antarctica with Captain Scott, 'Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time that has ever been devised. ' Despite this there has never been a shortage of volunteers willing to endure the bad times in pursuit of the glory that polar exploration sometimes brings. Nick Rennison's compelling book tells the memorable stories of the men and women who have risked their lives by entering the white wastelands of the Arctic and the Antarctic, from the compelling tales of Scott, Shacklet on and Amundsen, to lesser known heroes such as Fridtjof Nansen and Robert Peary. A Short History of Polar Exploration also looks at the hold that the polar regions have often had on the imaginations of artists and writers in the last two hundred years examining the pain tings, films and literature that they have inspired.

The Cambridge History of the Polar Regions by Adrian Howkins,Peder Roberts Pdf

The Cambridge History of the Polar Regions is a landmark collection drawing together the history of the Arctic and Antarctica from the earliest times to the present. Structured as a series of thematic chapters, an international team of scholars offer a range of perspectives from environmental history, the history of science and exploration, cultural history, and the more traditional approaches of political, social, economic, and imperial history. The volume considers the centrality of Indigenous experience and the urgent need to build action in the present on a thorough understanding of the past. Using historical research based on methods ranging from archives and print culture to archaeology and oral histories, these essays provide fresh analyses of the discovery of Antarctica, the disappearance of Sir John Franklin, the fate of the Norse colony in Greenland, the origins of the Antarctic Treaty, and much more. This is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of our planet.

Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ... only recorded white woman to reach such a high latitude, 770 48' N., and held that peculiar honor until Madame D'aunet visited Spitzbergen in 1839. Lieutenant Chariton Laptief took up the westward voyage in 1739, under orders from the Admiralty to complete the survey by sea or by land. From his farthest, Cape Thaddeus, 760 47' N., he turned back and wintered on the Chatanga. The following year yielded no results save the besetment and loss of his vessel, three hundred miles from his old winter-quarters, their only hope of safety. This journey was made on foot in the beginning of an Arctic winter, across a desolate, uninhabited tundra. Day by day men broke down under excessive exertions and insufficient food, and no less than twelve men perished of cold and exhaustion. Nevertheless, Laptief continued his work by land the following spring, his endeavors being particularly directed to passing around the north point of Asia, --an exceedingly difficult task from its extremely high latitude, in 770 34', over six degrees to the north of the extreme northerly point of America, Boothia Felix, 720 N. His mate, Chelyuskin, reached this cape, which properly bears his name, in May, 1742, by a long and difficult sledge journey from the Chatanga, while Laptief and others explored the rest of the peninsula and ended voyages to the west. Chelyuskins's discovery of the northernmost point of Asia has been often questioned, but NordenSkiold puts his claims beyond cavil. The westerly voyage of Lassinius from the Lena, in 1735, ended a short distance to the east of the delta in utter disaster, 53 of the 62 men, including Lassinius, dying of scurvy in winter quarters. Dmitri Lapteif, being then charged with the work, pursued it with such perseverance, .
