Occupational Safety and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health,Occupational Safety and Health Administration,U. S. Coast Guard Pdf

In the past decade, industry, government, and the general public have become increasingly aware of the need to respond to the hazardous waste problem, which has grown steadily over the past 40 years. In 1980, Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) -- the Superfund law-to provide for "liability, compensation, cleanup, and emergency response for hazardous substances released into the environment and the cleanup of inactive waste disposal sites." This manual is a guidance document for managers responsible for occupational safety and health programs at inactive hazardous waste sites. It assumes a basic knowledge of science and experience in occupational safety and health. It is the product of a four-agency committee (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH], the Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA], the U.S. Coast Guard [USCG], and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency [EPA]) mandated by CERCLA section 301(f) to study the problem of protecting the safety and health of workers at hazardous waste sites, and by CERCLA section 111(c)(6) to develop a program to protect the health and safety of employees involved in response to hazardous substance releases, removals, or remedial actions. This manual is intended for federal, state, and local officials and their contractors. It may be used: As a planning tool by government or private individuals; As a management tool by upper level or field managers; As an educational tool to provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of safety and health protection at hazardous waste sites; As a reference document for site personnel who need to review important aspects of health and safety. This document is not a detailed industrial hygiene textbook or a comprehensive source book on occupational safety and health. It provides general guidance and should be used as a preliminary basis for developing a specific health and safety program. The appropriateness of the information presented should always be evaluated in light of site-specific conditions. Other sources and experienced individuals should be consulted as necessary for the detail needed to design and implement occupational safety and health programs at specific hazardous waste sites.

Resources and References by Donna S. Kocurek,Bayle Woodside Pdf

This guide book provides references and resources for the complex field of hazardous waste and hazardous materials management. The book is divided into general topics such as air quality, industrial wastewater, pollution prevention, and risk assessment under hazardous waste management and chemical hazards, emergency planning, and hazard communication under hazardous materials management. Each individual section includes a list of annotated bibliographies of the most recent books by major publishers as well as established, standard references. Following the annotated titles, are additional references of books and documents by publishers, technical associations, and governmental agencies (primarily the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). In general, only references from 1986 onward are included since the technology and regulations affecting hazardous waste and materials are constantly evolving. Additional resources included in the book are video tapes for training and instruction, information services and databases, libraries, agency contacts, technical journals, and a list of publishers and ordering information. This book will be a useful reference to professionals in the environmental field who need an extensive, but concise source of technical information and contacts. The book will be a valuable addition to individual libraries and will fill a current reference void in university libraries, and technical libraries in industry and government. At present there are very few technical bibliographies in the field, and none has covered topics related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste as extensively as this book.

Handbook of OSHA Construction Safety and Health by Charles D. Reese,James Vernon Eidson Pdf

Although the construction industry employs only five percent of the nation's work force, it suffers 20 percent of the nation's occupational fatalities and 12 percent of all U.S. injuries. Because of this the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has consolidated their construction standards, compliance assistance, cooperative programs, and technical services to form the Directorate of Construction. Construction sites and operations have become the prime targets for the Directorate of Construction, which has greatly increased its number of inspections, citations and penalties. The Handbook of OSHA Construction Safety and Health is for safety professional, contractor, project manager and owner who has the responsibility of implementing an effective on-site safety and health program. These professionals are now in charge of everything from the safe operation of equipment to the safe removal of hazardous waste from the construction site. It is a practical guide that can be used by the construction industry on existing and future projects and jobsites in the critical area of occupational safety and health. Written using OSHA's Construction standards as a framework, the book provides those responsible for construction safety and health with a definitive guide for eliminating safety and health hazards from construction worksites. In addition, the handbook addresses subjects such as contractor liability, multi-employer sites and focused inspection which are real and time problem areas faced by the construction industry. The Handbook of OSHA Construction Safety and Health contains a model safety and health program, examples of accident analysis and prevention approaches, sample safety and health checklist and forms, and over 300 illustrations.
