Helen of the Old House (Classic Reprint) by Harold Bell Wright Pdf
Excerpt from Helen of the Old House But it has come to pass that in these days when the people speak of Adam Ward they do not smile. When they speak of Adam Wards daughter, Helen, they smile, indeed, but with quite a different meaning. The history of Millsburgh is not essentially different from that of a thousand other cities of its class. Born of the natural resources of the hills and forests, the first rude mill was located on that wide sweeping bend of the river. About this industrial beginning a settlement gathered. As the farm lands of the valley were developed, the railroad came, bringing more mills. And so the town grew up around its smoky heart. It was in those earlier days that Adam Ward, a workman then, patented and introduced the new process. It was the new process, together with its owners native genius for "getting on" that, in time, made Adam the owner of the Mill. And, finally, it was this combination of Adam and the new process that gave this one mill dominion over all others. As the Mill increased hi size, importance and power, and the town grew into the city, Adam Wards material possessions were multiplied many times. Then came the year of this story. It was midsummer. No well informed resident of Millsburgh, when referring to the principal industry of his little manufacturing city, ever says "the mills"-it is always "the Mill." The reason for this common habit of mind is that one mill so overshadows all others, and so dominates the industrial and civic life of this community, that in the people's thought it stands for all. The philosopher who keeps the cigar stand on the corner of Congress Street and Ward Avenue explained it very clearly when he answered an inquiring stranger, "You just can't think Millsburgh without thinkin' mills; an' you can't think mills without thinkin' the Mill."

Harold Bell Wright was a best-selling American writer of fiction, essays, and non-fiction during the first half of the 20th century. Although mostly forgotten or ignored after the middle of the 20th century, he is said to have been the first American writer to sell a million copies of a novel and the first to make $1 million from writing fiction. Between 1902 and 1942 Wright wrote 19 books, several stage plays, and many magazine articles. More than 15 movies were made or claimed to be made from Wright's stories, including Gary Cooper's first major movie, The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926) and the John Wayne film, The Shepherd of the Hills (1941).
Excerpt from Helen: A Tale We read that the grief for her young brother's loss told upon her own health. She was often confined to the sofa, and forbidden to use her pen; her idle fancy began once more to weave romances, and so it was that she planned the story of [film and made her notes for it. The work progressed slowly. As she herself recovered she was absorbed in other work and daily preoccupation. 'there were difficulties in Ireland then as now. Rents, repairs, and tenants to be attended to. We are told that she herself looked after all these: 'the letting of the village houses, the drains, gutters, and pathways, the employment of the poor; in short, all the hundred and one duties that devolve upon the steward of landed property.' She went straight from the rent-book to her little desk and to the ms. Of Helen. 'and yet, ' says her stepmother, 'she never wrote fiction with more life and spirit than when she had been for some time with the hard realities of life, ' com bining, as she says herself, with all these practical and necessary occupations, 'thinking three hours a day of Helen to what purpose I dare not say.' One of her sisters, Mrs. Butler, specially encouraged her to go on at a time when she had nearly thrust the work aside in despair. 'i am afraid you will be tired of Helen before you become acquainted with her, ' she writes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Helen: A Story of Things to Be Perhaps thus grown, one is not so rugged as the blizzard-defying man, nor so ultra-respectable as those whom we designate as Yankee, but he is large with faith in humanity and untiring in the service of the commonwealth. If Helen is over drawn it is only because she feels the moods and tenses and inflections of the land. As the Bedouin loves the sand, and as the Chinaman loves Cathay, so does the Californian love the gray green hills and the fierce pure air that colors his work and whispers to his soul. Nowhere else does humanity grope so surely toward sunlit mountain peaks; nowhere else does the mind answer to the stimulus of the beauti ful as it does there. If the old Californian sees in Helen a child of his own, the object of this little book will have been accomplished. Excerpt from At the Actors' Boarding House: And Other Stories He'd been mooning around all the way from the Coast, about a certain little party back East, until everybody was sick and tired of him. And now Caroline was Mrs. Sam, and just crazy to know all about the business. She said they'd go where Sam had lived before, and not to any pokey Old place.
