Finding Stinko by Michael de Guzman Pdf

Newboy hasn't spoken in three years. One morning he opened his mouth and nothing came out. He doesn't know why he stopped talking, but what he does know is that he's through with the state child-care system. In twelve years he's lived in eleven foster homes, and the Knoxes are the worst of the bunch. Now, with no voice, no family, and no exact plan, Newboy is running away for good. Living on the streets means danger and excitement around every corner, but the one thing Newboy never expected to find is a companion in the form of an old ventriloquist dummy lying in a Dumpster – a puppet with no hands, backward feet, and a chunk of its nose missing. Amazingly, this beat-up doll whom he dubs "Stinko" possesses a kind of magic that helps Newboy rediscover his ability to communicate. This is a fast-paced adventure about a runaway kid figuring out not just what he's searching for but also what he has to say. Finding Stinko is a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

City of Evil by Sean Fewster Pdf

They call Adelaide the City of Churches. What they forget is that every church has a graveyard and every graveyard is full of skeletons. Welcome to Adelaide, a city where transvestite, pro-wrestling truck drivers are beheaded and dismembered by lesbian prostitutes; where husbands stab and mutilate their wives and are forgiven; where former psychiatrists transform into delusional assassins and murder their co-workers in cold blood. We trust you'll enjoy your stay. In this compelling collection of true-crime stories, award-winning journalist Sean Fewster guides the reader through the darkest excesses of the City of Churches. He goes beyond the high-profile cases you know already. These are the crimes that happen in Adelaide every week - the bizarre, the unbalanced, the warped. No crime is committed in the southern capital without a macabre twist, an uncomfortable and disconcerting surprise worthy of a splatter film or suspense thriller. Truth is stranger than fiction and these are the everyday horror stories of South Australia.

Lincoln Day by Day by United States. Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission Pdf

"When, thirty-five years ago, the Lincoln Centennial Association of Springfield, Illinois changed its character from a local organization celebrating Lincoln's birthday with an annual banquet to a research organization, the first project undertaken was an attempt to discover where Lincoln was and what he did every day of his life. In 1926 the pioneering result, a slim pamphlet, now a collector's item, Lincoln in the Year 1858, was published. Six others appeared at regular intervals (1859 and 1860 in 1927, 1854 in 1928, 1855 in 1929, 1856 and 1857 in 1930) ... The seven pamphlets, revised, were brought together in 1933 in Lincoln 1854-1861, Being the Day-by-Day Activities of Abraham Lincoln from January 1, 1854 to March 4, 1861, by Paul M. Angle, executive secretary of the Abraham Lincoln Association. The following eight years carried the chronology back to Lincoln's birth with three more volumes -- Lincoln 1847-1853 by Benjamin P. Thomas, 1936; and Lincoln 1840-1846 and Lincoln 1809-1839 by Harry E. Pratt, 1939 and 1941 -- and the series became known as one of the most useful reference works in the entire range of Lincoln scholarship. Lincoln's daily activities were chronicled by using every authentic source. In the resulting mountain of material, three sources proved most fruitful: Lincoln's writings; newspapers; and Illinois court records. The opening of the Robert Todd Lincoln Papers in July, 1947, provided much new material, and The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, in nine volumes, appearing in 1953, almost doubled the number of known compositions from Lincoln's pen. Revising and reprinting the chronology was a project often discussed by Abraham Lincoln Association officials, but never accomplished, as the undertaking would be large and expensive, particularly if carried through Lincoln's years as President. The Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission, after considering other possibilities, recognized the revision and enlargement of Lincoln Day-by-Day as a research tool indispensable to future generations of students. It is singularly appropriate that an idea conceived by an organization formed to celebrate Lincoln's Centennial should be completed by an agency created by Congress to celebrate Lincoln's Sesquicentennial. The Abraham Lincoln Association generously transferred its copyright to the Commission"--Preface.

Narratives of Art Practice and Mental Wellbeing by Olivia Sagan Pdf

Narratives of Art Practice and Mental Wellbeing draws on extensive research carried out with mental health service users who are also practicing artists. Using narrative data gained through hours of reflective conversation, it explores not whether art can contribute to positive wellbeing and improved mental health - as this is now established ground - but rather how art works, and the role art making can play in people’s lives as they encounter crises, relapse, recovery or ‘beyonding’. The book maps the delicate ways in which finding a means to tell our story sometimes is the creative project we seek, and offers a reminder of how intrinsically linked our life trajectories are with creative opportunities. It describes the wide range of artistic activity occurring in health and community settings and the meanings of these practices to people with histories of mental turbulence. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, the book explore the stories and various forms of visual arts practices spoken of, and considers the art making processes, the creative moments and the objects which in some cases have changed people’s lives. The seven chapters of the book offer a blend of personal testimony, theory, debate, critique and celebration, and examine key topics of deliberation within the fields of art therapy, arts in health, community arts practice, participatory arts, and widening participation within arts education. It will be valuable reading for researchers, students, artists and practitioners in these fields.
