Heredity in the Light of Recent Research (Classic Reprint) by L. DONCASTER Pdf

Excerpt from Heredity in the Light of Recent Research During the whole history Of scientific enquiry, one Of the most fascinating and at the same time one Of the most baffling of the problems which confront mankind has been the cause Of the resemblances and differences between parents and children. In general, the facts are common knowledge; the essence of Heredity and Variation is expressed in the proverbs 'like begets like and Nature never uses the same mould twice.' Yet clearly the two proverbs are con tradictory, for if like really begets like Nature must use the same mould for all the members Of a family. Our object therefore is to investigate, first, how the characters of a parent actually are distributed among the children, and how the Offspring of the same parentage may differ among themselves; and secondly, if possible, what is the mechanism by which the re semblances and diversities are brought about. Genetics by Herbert Eugene Walter Pdf

Excerpt from Genetics: An Introduction to the Study of Heredity The following pages had their origin in a course of lectures upon Heredity, given at Brown University during the winter of 1911 - 1912, which were amplified and repeated in part the following summer at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, before the biological summer school of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. An attempt has been made to summarize for the intelligent, but uninitiated, reader some of the more recent phases of the questions of heredity which are at present agitating the biological world. It is hoped that this summary will not only be of interest to the general reader, but that it will also be of service in college courses dealing with evolution and heredity. The subject of heredity concerns every one, but many of those who wish to become better informed regarding it are either too busily engaged or lack the opportunity to study the matter out for themselves. The recent literature in this field is already very large, with every indication that much more is about to follow, which is a further discouragement to non technical readers. Excerpt from Preliminary Report of a Study of Heredity in Insanity in the Light of the Mendelian Laws Insane hospital statistics show plainly that heredity has much to do with the causation of certain forms Of nervous and mental disease. Yet we know but little Of the exact conditions under which such disease is transmitted from parent to Offspring. The Object Of the present research has been to accumulate and examine such data as may serve to throw some light upon this Obscure problem. Problems of Genetics (Classic Reprint) by William Bateson Pdf

Excerpt from Problems of Genetics This book gives the substance of a series of lectures delivered in Yale University, where I had the privilege of holding the office of Silliman Lecturer in 1907. The delay in publication was brought about by a variety of causes. Inasmuch as the purpose of the lectures is to discuss some of the wider problems of biology in the light of knowledge acquired by Mendelian methods of analysis, it was essential that a fairly full account of the conclusions established by them should first be undertaken and I therefore postponed the present work till a book on Mendel's Principles had been completed. On attempting a more general discussion Of the bearing Of the phenomena on the theory of Evolution, I found myself continually hindered by the consciousness that such treatment is premature, and by doubt whether it were not better that the debate should for the present stand indefinitely adjourned. That species have come into existence by an evolutionary process no one seriously doubts; but few who are familiar with the facts that genetic research has revealed are now inclined to speculate as to the manner by which the process has been ac complished. Our knowledge of the nature and properties Of living things is far too meagre to justify any such attempts. Suggestions of course can be made: though, however, these ideas may have a stimulating value in the lecture room, they look weak and thin when set out in print. The work which may one day give them a body has yet to be done. The development of negations is always an ungrateful task apt to be postponed for the positive business of experiment. Such work is happily now going forward in most of the centers of scientific life. Of many of the subjects here treated we already know more than we did in 1907. The delay in production has made it possible to incorporate these new contributions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Heredity in Relation to Eugenics (Classic Reprint) by Charles Benedict Davenport Pdf

Excerpt from Heredity in Relation to Eugenics The Eugenics Record Office will be glad to assist in the establishment of local eugenics societies which shall become centers for the study of local blood-lines and for local in struction. The Office seeks to assist state officials in the study of the classes which are supported and protected by the State, and to assist the States to locate the centers in which their defectives and delinquents are being bred. It is believed that a little money spent in studying the sources of reproduction of persons who are destined to become state wards will prove a highly profitable investment, since it may lead to steps that will diminish such reproduction. Classical Genetic Research and Its Legacy by Benoit Godin Pdf

Governments and researchers from industrial countries have been measuring science and technology for more than seventy years. This book provides an historical examination of official science and technology statistics and indicators in Western countries and addresses the following questions: What were the main historical moments that led to the development of statistics on science and technology? What were the main socio-political stakes behind the activities of science measurement? What were the philosophical and ideological conceptions that drove measurement? What statistics and indicators were developed and how were they constructed? The first part of the book concentrates on the construction and development of science and technology statistics from 1930 to the present, the principles at work, and the vested interests and forces behind that construction. The second part analyzes to what uses statistics were put, and with how much confidence actors used statistics to document their case or to promote their political agenda.

The Trait Book (Classic Reprint) by C. B. Davenport Pdf

Excerpt from The Trait Book In the study of human heredity it has first of all to be recognized that progress will be made only as traits are studied one at a time. The modern science of heredity, indeed, seeks as the element of study the unit character. What are unit characters can, however, be told only by breeding experiments in which the true units reveal them selves as relatively, ii not absolutely, constant, unalterable, indivisible things. On the other hand, many apparently simple traits are shown by hybridization or the mating of unlike parents, to be complexes of unit characters. The first step in the resolution of human traits is, then, a primary rough analysis into fairly simple traits and, secondly, the study of the behavior of these traits in heredity. It is the purpose of this list to afford a list based on such a rough analysis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
