High-energy Nuclear Optics of Polarized Particles by Vladimir G. Baryshevsky Pdf

The various phenomena caused by refraction and diffraction of polarized elementary particles in matter have opened up a new research area in the particle physics: nuclear optics of polarized particles. Effects similar to the well-known optical phenomena such as birefringence and Faraday effects, exist also in particle physics, though the particle wavelength is much less than the distance between atoms of matter. Current knowledge of the quasi-optical effects, which exist for all particles in any wavelength range (and energies from low to extremely high), will enable us to investigate different properties of interacting particles (nuclei) in a new aspect. This pioneering book will provide detailed accounts of quasi-optical phenomena in the particle polarization, and will interest physicists and professionals in experimental particle physics.

Physics With A High Luminosity Polarized Electron Ion Collider - Proceedings Of The Workshop On High Energy Nuclear Physics (Epic 99) by Leslie C Bland,J Timothy Londergan,Adam P Szczepaniak Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Physics with an Electron-Polarized Ion Collider (EPIC-99), jointly sponsored by the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility and Nuclear Theory Center, and the Institute for Nuclear Theory, University of Washington. It was held in Bloomington, Indiana, April 8-11, 1999. The purpose was to discuss important new physics phenomena which could be investigated with a high-luminosity asymmetric collider consisting of a beam of polarized electrons (with energy roughly 5 GeV), and a beam of polarized protons or other light ions of approximately 40 GeV energy. The Workshop brought together experts in the field who highlighted the unique potential for such a facility, and compared the prospects and challenges for this collider with present and proposed facilities around the world. The proceedings of this Workshop summarize our currently available knowledge on the physics potential for a polarized asymmetric collider. It provides a unique collection of information on the opportunities which such a facility would provide.

Experimental Techniques in High-energy Nuclear and Particle Physics by Thomas Ferbel Pdf

Experimental Techniques in High-Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics is a compilation of outstanding technical papers and reviews of the ingenious methods developed for experimentation in modern nuclear and particle physics. This book, a second edition, provides a balanced view of the major tools and technical concepts currently in use, and elucidates the basic principles that underly the detection devices. Several of the articles in this volume have never been published, or have appeared in relatively inaccessible journals. Although the emphasis is on charged-particle tracking and calorimetry, general reviews of ionization detectors and Monte Carlo techniques are also included. This book serves as a compact source of reference for graduate students and experimenters in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, seeking information on some of the major ideas and techniques developed for modern experiments in these fields.

Spins in Nuclear and Hadronic Reactions by Hiroyuki Yabu,Toru Suzuki,H. Toki Pdf

Spin physics is one of the most important and active areas of theoretical/experimental nuclear physics. In nuclear reactions, the observations of spin polarizations give important clues to the nuclear structures and reaction mechanism. For high energy nuclear physics, the polarized quark-parton distributions of the nucleon/nucleus are studied intensively. In the study of baryon structures and nuclear astrophysics, spin is an important observable through hadron reactions. The focus of these proceedings is on the spin-dependent phenomena in nuclear and hadronic reactions and related topics in nuclear and hadron physics. The main subjects covered are: Spin polarization phenomena in nuclear and hadronic reactions; spin-dependent excitations in nuclei and spin observables; recent development in nuclear reaction theories; spin-dependent phenomena in fundamental processes; related topics.

Common Problems in Low- and Medium-Energy Nuclear Physics by B. Castel,B. Goulard,F.C. Khanna Pdf

The 1978 Advanced Study Institute in Nuclear Theory devoted to common problems in Low and Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics was held at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada from August 21 through September 1, 1978. The present volume contains the text of 25 lectures and seminars given at the Institute and illustrates the directions that nuclear physicists are taking in the evolution toward a unified picture of low, medium and high energy phenomena. Recent attempts at unifying the weak and electromagnetic inter action in particle physics have led naturally to question their role in nuclei. The success of the quark model at interpreting the new resonances in high energy physics makes it imperative to consider their role in dealing with nuclear physics problems at the microscopic level. Is our present knowledge of the nuclear potential consistent' with recent experimental evidence at low and medium energy and can it correlate meaningfully nuclear and pion physics phenomena? These are some of the fundamental questions debated in this book attempting to offer a consistent picture of the nuclear system as it emerges using the electromagnetic, weak and strong interaction probe. The lectures and seminars forming the present volume have been divided into four sections dealing with a) the weak interaction, b) quarks and nuclear structure, c) physics of electrons, protons and kaons, and finally d) pion physics.

Theory Of Nuclear Reactions by A G Sitenko Pdf

The book presents an extended version of the lecture course on the theory of nuclear reactions that has been given by the author for some years in Kiev State University. An account is given of the nonrelativistic nuclear reaction theory. The R — matrix description of nuclear reactions is considered and the dispersion method is formulated. Mechanisms of nuclear reactions and their relationship are studied in detail. Attention is paid to nuclear reactions involving the compound nuclear formation and to direct nuclear processes. The optical model, the diffraction approach and high — energy diffraction nuclear processes involving composite particles are discussed. It also deals with some problems treated only in special journal papers.

Nuclear Physics by M. G. Bowler Pdf

Nuclear Physics is concerned primarily with low-energy nuclear physics rather than high-energy or elementary particle physics, although examples from particle physics are used where appropriate. The Fermi Golden Rule is given emphasis throughout. This text consists of six chapters and begins with an introduction to nuclear physics, followed by a discussion on nuclear structure at a fairly basic level. This book also discusses the nuclear periodic table, radioactivity, and unstable nuclear states as well as nuclear mass and nuclear binding energy. Spin and static electric and magnetic moments are then examined from the perspective of quantum mechanics rather than through the vector model of angular momentum. Quantum mechanics is also used to treat nuclear decay in the next chapter. The theory of nuclear reactions is discussed by highlighting the concepts of cross-section and resonance. The penultimate chapter deals with self-sustaining nuclear reactions, with particular reference to the nuclear physics of fission reactors and the nuclear aspects of stellar physics. This chapter ends with the application of the theory of thermonuclear reactions to the design of a thermonuclear power plant. The final chapter is devoted to charge independence and isospin in low-energy nuclear physics.

Nuclear Fusion with Polarized Fuel by Giuseppe Ciullo,Ralf Engels,Markus Büscher,Alexander Vasilyev Pdf

This book offers a detailed examination of the latest work on the potential of polarized fuel to realize the vision of energy production by nuclear fusion. It brings together contributions from nuclear physicists and fusion physicists with the aims of fostering exchange of information between the two communities, describing the current status in the field, and examining new ideas and projects under development. It is evident that polarized fuel can offer huge improvements for the first generation of fusion reactors and open new technological possibilities for future generations, including neutron lean reactors, which could be the most popular and sustainable energy production option to avoid environmental problems. Nevertheless, many questions must be resolved before polarized fuel can be used for energy production in the different reactor types. Readers will find this book to be a stimulating source of information on the key issues. It is based on contributions from leading scientists delivered at the meetings “Nuclear Fusion with Polarized Nucleons” (Trento, November 2013) and “PolFusion” (Ferrara, July 2015).
