Higher Order Thinking Skills in the Language Classroom: A Concise Guide by Afsaneh Ghanizadeh,Ali H. Al-Hoorie,Safoura Jahedizadeh Pdf

In this book, we try to provide a practical, down-to-earth guide for those who are involved in language learning and teaching. We hope that this book will be a useful reading for those who would like to incorporate higher-order thinking skills (HOTS)-enhancing techniques in their teaching practice. We set out from the position that, although it is hardly doubtful that it is at the heart of education, critical thinking is in reality often not given its due attention in pedagogy, particularly in language education. This book offers readers some practical advice on how to implement HOTS in their own practice. It has been written to take the reader through each technique with the ultimate goal of promoting HOTS step-by-step. In the introductory chapter, we present an overview of the theory behind HOTS, its definition, its relation to Bloom’s Taxonomy, its two dimensions (critical thinking and reflective thinking), and the ideas of some influential thinkers in this area. The subsequent chapters present six HOTS-enhancing techniques that classroom teachers can draw from, namely graphic organizers, critical discourse analysis, argumentation, emotion regulation and emotional intelligence enhancing techniques, reflective journals, and mindfulness-based strategies. As the book draws on a wide-ranging review of literature with exercises for direct use with language learners, we hope that this provides both theoretical and practical support for the teaching process to help language learners become effective critical thinkers. The compilation of the ideas in this book took us a long time, over a decade. Something that takes such a long time requires much engagement and life experience; so did this book.

ELLs: Thinking Skills and CCSS, Focus on the Six Shifts by Estee Lopez Pdf

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) require students to engage higher level thinking skills and language use to activate their understanding of content/text. They are designed to be academically rigorous for all students, and are especially so for students who are English language learners (ELL). In ELLs: Thinking Skills and CCSS, Dr. Estee Lopez provides evidence-based instructional approaches as well as best practices for helping ELLs meet the CCSS for ELA. The six-page (tri-fold) guide is structured around the six shifts embodied in the CCSS for English Language Arts: 1. Increasing reading of informational text/balancing informational and literary texts 2. Knowledge in the disciplines 3. Staircase of complexity 4. Text-based answers 5. Writing from sources 6. Academic language The guide explains each shift, its implications for ELLs, and what is required of teachers. For each shift, the author lists best practices, examples of scaffolding for ELLs, and things that teachers and administrators must to do create conditions that ensure that ELLs succeed.

Handbook of Research on Advancing Critical Thinking in Higher Education by Wisdom, Sherrie Pdf

The importance of critical thinking has surged as academics in higher education realize that many students, upon entering college, lack the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed. While much has been written regarding the ‘lack’ of critical thinking, less has been written on the success of methods implemented to develop this fundamental skill. The Handbook of Research on Advancing Critical Thinking in Higher Education explores the effective methods and tools being used to integrate the development of critical thinking skills in both undergraduate and graduate studies. Due to the difficulties associated with teaching critical thinking skills to learners of any age, this publication is a crucial addition to the scholarly reference works available to pre-service and early career teachers, seasoned educational professionals, professors across disciplines, curriculum specialists, and educational administrators.

Flipping Academic English Language Learning by Erik Voss,Ilka Kostka Pdf

This book draws on theory, research, and practice-oriented literature to offer an introduction to flipped learning and offer busy instructors advice on how to flip their academic English language courses. The chapters balance theoretical foundations, practical applications, and useful resources for developing materials. The first half of this book defines flipped learning and academic English, describes how it supports English language learning, and explains the role of technology, as well as issues with accountability and feedback. The second half of the book then makes connections between the theoretical issues presented in the first three chapters and the practical applications in the following chapters, which provide lesson descriptions and assessment ideas for language learning contexts with or without access to technology. The book concludes with a list of tools and technologies for developing materials and activities, as well as additional resources for professional development and further exploration of flipped English language learning.
