From Higher Aims to Hired Hands by Rakesh Khurana Pdf

Is management a profession? Should it be? Can it be? This major work of social and intellectual history reveals how such questions have driven business education and shaped American management and society for more than a century. The book is also a call for reform. Rakesh Khurana shows that university-based business schools were founded to train a professional class of managers in the mold of doctors and lawyers but have effectively retreated from that goal, leaving a gaping moral hole at the center of business education and perhaps in management itself. Khurana begins in the late nineteenth century, when members of an emerging managerial elite, seeking social status to match the wealth and power they had accrued, began working with major universities to establish graduate business education programs paralleling those for medicine and law. Constituting business as a profession, however, required codifying the knowledge relevant for practitioners and developing enforceable standards of conduct. Khurana, drawing on a rich set of archival material from business schools, foundations, and academic associations, traces how business educators confronted these challenges with varying strategies during the Progressive era and the Depression, the postwar boom years, and recent decades of freewheeling capitalism. Today, Khurana argues, business schools have largely capitulated in the battle for professionalism and have become merely purveyors of a product, the MBA, with students treated as consumers. Professional and moral ideals that once animated and inspired business schools have been conquered by a perspective that managers are merely agents of shareholders, beholden only to the cause of share profits. According to Khurana, we should not thus be surprised at the rise of corporate malfeasance. The time has come, he concludes, to rejuvenate intellectually and morally the training of our future business leaders.

Incomplete Commentary on Matthew (Opus imperfectum) by Thomas C. Oden Pdf

Despite some gaps in coverage, the Incomplete Commentary on Matthew has long been prized for its early and lengthy exposition of the Gospel of Matthew. Thomas Aquinas noted that he would rather have a complete copy of the Incomplete Commentary on Matthew than to be mayor of Paris. Offered here for the first time in English translation is a wonderful resource designed for pastors, teachers, students and lay people interested in the early church's interpretation of Matthew's Gospel.

SWEET & SOUR UNCLE by Jim Little Pdf

This is a love story that spans over a sixty-eight-year period. Some of this time was unrequited love for a painful twenty-eight years and also a happy time of reconciliation. The main character of the story is Ralph H. Little (1908-1999). He pursued the “Love of his life,” Freda, for all of his adult live. A log house in the Oregon woods defines Ralph more than anything else in his life. He was told during the courtship of Freda that one condition of marriage was the building of a log house on her father’s 180-acre, Oregon homestead. Logs were cut by hand and hauled to the construction site by horses. The log house was built not only with hard work and sweat, by “Uncle” Ralph, but primarily with love for his beloved Freda. Ralph suffered betrayal and the loss of Freda. After 28 dark and lonely years Freda returned after she suffered a betrayal in her life. There was a happy remarriage and almost immediately Freda suffered illness and became bed-ridden. Freda was expected to live for only six months. Ralph lived out his marriage vows by nursing Freda for 13 years beyond the time she was expected to live. Following the death of Freda, Ralph began showing signs of dementia. He pleaded with his nephew and niece, who became his caregivers, to help him stay in his log house, for as long as possible. He often said, "I will have to be handcuffed to leave this house." Sadly it eventually came to pass that is exactly what happened. This story is also about those, “sweet and sour times”, and the resulting family relationships and legal issues often faced by caregivers.

Encountering Diversity in Indian Biblical Studies by David J. Chalcraft,Zhodi Angami Pdf

This book provides analysis of a variety of biblical narratives and texts which are the vehicle for the expression, articulation and performance of diverse identities in the Indian context and is the first attempt to do so for a global audience of scholars and students. From pan-Indian social problems attributed to caste, class and gender inequality, to specific North Eastern tribal settings, Dalit struggles in rural Andhra Pradesh and the experience of Christian autorickshaw drivers in urban Chennai, the book explores the diverse geographical, cultural, social, economic and linguistic settings in which the Bible is encountered. The holistic and multidisciplinary approach to Biblical studies adopted broadens the field beyond textual exegesis. Encounters with the Bible are revealed in diverse chapters impacted by contexts of caste realities, the history of Indian Christianity, colonial and post-colonial frameworks and educational institutions. Full use is made of 'vernacular' texts and traditions including oral and written cultural, folk tale, literary and auto/biographical narratives in Tribal, Dalit and British colonial settings. Diversity of method is championed through including sociological analysis of Indian social realities, qualitative fieldwork techniques and a kaleidoscope of visual and sensory environments with over 30 photographs. The book celebrates and promotes diversity in Indian biblical studies, creativity and sometimes conflicting perspectives. Encountering Diversity in Indian Biblical Studies will be of interest to students, scholars and researchers working on post-colonial biblical studies and diversity in Christianity, particularly in the Indian context.

"We're the Light Crust Doughboys from Burrus Mill" by Jean A. Boyd Pdf

The Light Crust Doughboys are one of the most long-lived and musically versatile bands in America. Formed in the early 1930s under the sponsorship of Burrus Mill and Elevator Company of Fort Worth, Texas, with Bob Wills and Milton Brown (the originator of western swing) at the musical helm and future Texas governor W. Lee "Pappy" O’Daniel as band manager and emcee, the Doughboys are still going strong in the twenty-first century. Arguably the quintessential Texas band, the Doughboys have performed all the varieties of music that Texans love, including folk and fiddle tunes, cowboy songs, gospel and hymns, commercial country songs and popular ballads, honky-tonk, ragtime and blues, western swing and jazz, minstrel songs, movie hits, and rock ‘n’ roll. In this book, Jean Boyd draws on the memories of Marvin "Smokey" Montgomery and other longtime band members and supporters to tell the Light Crust Doughboys story from the band’s founding in 1931 through the year 2000. She follows the band’s musical evolution and personnel over seven decades, showing how band members and sponsors responded to changes in Texas culture and musical tastes during the Great Depression, World War II, and the postwar years. Boyd concludes that the Doughboys’ willingness to change with changing times and to try new sounds and fresh musical approaches is the source of their enduring vitality. Historical photographs of the band, an annotated discography of their pre–World War II work, and histories of some of the band’s songs round out the volume.

Cover Your Assets and Become Your Own Liability by Gene Landrum Pdf

Sacrifice Tomorrow for Today and You'll have Destroyed Tomorrow While America was landing on the moon, Japan was landing in our living room. One nation focused on the conquest of space; the other on the conquest of mass consumer markets. Cover Your Assets delves into how an export power became an importer in three decades through self-serving. CYA management and discusses the need for leadership transformation to return to the days of glory. The cost of a nation's leadership adopting a take care of me now mentality is huge. When they sacrifice tomorrow for today, they have sold tomorrow. CYA includes a self-assessment on how to change personally and professionally. There is a need to zap the Yes Men in our heads and understand what makes us tick. Those who don't are hard-pressed to understand how to manage, motivate or control others. We all have a need to feel good today but too much of today leads to too little tomorrow.
