Historic Photos of University of Michigan by Christina M Consolino Pdf

Founded in Detroit, Michigan, in 1817 as one of the first public universities in the nation, the University of Michigan moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. What started as a forty-acre campus with four buildings, expanded over the next 170 years to become a university with four campuses: Central, Athletic, Medical and North. It has become one of the most distinguished universities in the world. Historic Photos of the University of Michigan depicts the unfolding history of the college in Ann Arbor from its early stages in the 1850s to its more modern self of the late 1970s. Exceptional black and white images of the campus and surrounding area, selected from the Bentley Historical Library's extensive collection, provide a taste of campus life while taking readers through the evolution of buildings, the beginning of an athletic legend, and the historic events that united the campus with a community. These photographs—many rarely seen—portray the richness that forms the proud history of the University of Michigan.

Historic Photos of Lake Michigan by Anonim Pdf

The vast lingering remnant of an ice age that came to a close more than 10,000 years ago, Lake Michigan has shaped the history of the settlements along its surrounding shores for centuries. Its storied waters have seen schooners, luxury steamships, and modern freighters, its lakeshores the rise of the railroads that helped to carve a way of life into the surrounding wooded wilderness for the Americans who called the region home. Through high times and lean, the lake’s 1,640 miles of coastline have clung to their untamed beauty even as bustling harbor hamlets and booming cities like Chicago and Milwaukee rose in their midst. Historic Photos of Lake Michigan chronicles portions of two centuries on and around Lake Michigan—the only great lake entirely within United States borders, the third-largest of the five Great Lakes, and the fifth-largest freshwater lake in the world—showcasing the ever-changing life and landscape along its quartz crystal coast.

Sterling Township by Sterling Township Public Library and Historical Commision Pdf

Sterling Township, located about 18 miles northeast of Detroit, was first settled after the Erie Canal was opened. The rich soil, relatively flat land, and the vital Clinton River attracted pioneer and immigrant families who arrived to establish farmsteads. The first influx of immigrants came mainly from the British Isles, and by the 1870s, German families had flocked to the area, raising dairy cattle and establishing farms. Belgians, arriving in the early 1900s, developed truck farming—growing fruits and vegetables to sell every week at the farmers’ market in Detroit. Farm culture prevailed until the 1950s, when large industrial plants began moving in, bringing with them workers and a need for housing and city services. Sterling Township became the city of Sterling Heights in 1968, and this collection of photographs will showcase the families and the way of life in the early days of this community, a historic community that is now the fourth largest city in Michigan.

A History of Wayne State University in Photographs, Second Edition by Evelyn Aschenbrenner Pdf

Wayne State University traces its earliest roots to the Civil War era and Detroit's Harper Hospital, where its Medical College was founded in 1868. In 1917, a junior college was formed in the building now called Old Main and along with four other schools—education, engineering, pharmacy, and a graduate school—these units would come to be called Wayne State University (WSU). The second edition of A History of Wayne State University in Photographs traces the evolution of those early schools into a modern research university with an extensive urban campus. Following the first edition, author Evelyn Aschenbrenner uses historical photos and archival material to give readers a complete visual guide to Wayne State University’s development, including an update of the last ten years—just in time for WSU’s 150th anniversary. She charts official milestones of the university, including the organization of colleges into a university in the 1930s, the drive for state support in the 1950s, and the new buildings constructed as academic programs expanded. Aschenbrenner also surveys campus life, including disciplinary and curricular development, student life, and the university’s relations with its surrounding neighborhood, which were strained by various urban renewal programs. The second edition retains the thoughtful introduction by Charles K. Hyde and original foreword by Bill McGraw, who was a student at WSU in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In a new foreword, President M. Roy Wilson argues that anniversaries like our sesquicentennial are special because "they give us something that is hard to get during the normal work week: perspective." The second edition of A History of Wayne State University in Photographs compiles rare and intriguing images that will be make a perfect keepsake for current and former students, faculty and staff, and anyone interested in Detroit history.
