History and Power of Mind by Richard Ingalese Pdf

A great student of the Science of Mind, Richard Ingalese frequently lectured on New Thought and topics of mental therapeutics. The History and Power of Mind is a collection of many of his lectures and articles, first published in 1902, with Ingalese's own annotations and expansions. Difficult subjects to wrangle, from self-control to hypnotism to self-healing, were not a problem for the articulate and charismatic Ingalese, who brings insight and intelligence to esoteric ideas and puts them in a practical and applicable context that demystifies mental and psychic phenomena for the intellectual reader curious about the mind, how it works, and what it can do. American lawyer RICHARD INGALESE (b. 1854) was a self-taught alchemist and proponent of New Thought. He claimed to have confected the true Philosopher's Stone, which confers immortality and turns common metals into gold, and disappeared, along with his wife, a psychic and healer, sometime in the early 20th century. Before their disappearance, Ingalese authored several articles and books, including Fragments of Truth (1921), Astrology and Health (1927), and Cosmogony and Evolution (1907).

The History and Power of Mind by Richard Ingalese Pdf

Excerpt from The History and Power of Mind This Book is made up from personal notes and stenographic reports of lectures delivered in New York City during the seasons of 1900-1901-1902, with the addition of some new matter in the form of amplifications. The compilation is made at the request of my students and is published primarily for their benefit. The material is left in the form in which it was delivered, and the photograph of the author is inserted, also at their request. The book may not appeal to the orthodox religionist nor to the materialist; but may prove interesting, if not enlightening, to the agnostic and to the investigator of either psychic phenomena, or the phenomena of mental therapeutics. The modern teachings of the Science of Mind have not appealed to many thinkers because of the vagueness of thought and expression of the majority of those who attempt to present it; and also because of the lack of a working hypothesis needed to explain the law under which both psychic and mental phenomena occur. This book is an attempt toward supplying the latter deficiency by stating laws under which Mind evolves and operates. The History and Power of Mind: New Thought Lectures on Occultism, Self-Control, Meditation and the Divinity of Mind (Hardcover) by Richard Ingalese Pdf

Richard Ingalese's lectures on the human mind, and its interactions with supernatural phenomena and lore, together form a classic work of occult guidance. Writing at the opening of the 20th century; a time when occultism underwent significant popularity, Richard Ingalese concentrates on topics which pertain directly to the human mind. Its capacity to interpret and affect the world around it, including realms unseen, is the central theme of this book, which acts as a superb introduction to the myriad occult phenomena in our lives. Use of what Ingalese terms the 'divine mind' is the way in which followers of the occult gain experience and knowledge of things beyond ordinary perception. Yet closeness with the Supreme Power is not a simple matter of mere contemplation; there are certain conditions of temperament and behavior that prepare a person for knowledge. Ingalese advocates calm introspection, self-control, and a harnessing of emotions which can distract from attainment.

This Is Your Mind on Plants by Michael Pollan Pdf

The instant New York Times bestseller | A Washington Post Notable Book | One of NPR's Best Books of the Year “Expert storytelling . . . [Pollan] masterfully elevates a series of big questions about drugs, plants and humans that are likely to leave readers thinking in new ways.” —New York Times Book Review From #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Pollan, a radical challenge to how we think about drugs, and an exploration into the powerful human attraction to psychoactive plants—and the equally powerful taboos. Of all the things humans rely on plants for—sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber—surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable. So, then, what is a “drug”? And why, for example, is making tea from the leaves of a tea plant acceptable, but making tea from a seed head of an opium poppy a federal crime? In This Is Your Mind on Plants, Michael Pollan dives deep into three plant drugs—opium, caffeine, and mescaline—and throws the fundamental strangeness, and arbitrariness, of our thinking about them into sharp relief. Exploring and participating in the cultures that have grown up around these drugs while consuming (or, in the case of caffeine, trying not to consume) them, Pollan reckons with the powerful human attraction to psychoactive plants. Why do we go to such great lengths to seek these shifts in consciousness, and then why do we fence that universal desire with laws and customs and fraught feelings? In this unique blend of history, science, and memoir, as well as participatory journalism, Pollan examines and experiences these plants from several very different angles and contexts, and shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively—as a drug, whether licit or illicit. But that is one of the least interesting things you can say about these plants, Pollan shows, for when we take them into our bodies and let them change our minds, we are engaging with nature in one of the most profound ways we can. Based in part on an essay published almost twenty-five years ago, this groundbreaking and singular consideration of psychoactive plants, and our attraction to them through time, holds up a mirror to our fundamental human needs and aspirations, the operations of our minds, and our entanglement with the natural world.

Materials of the Mind by James Poskett Pdf

Phrenology was the most popular mental science of the Victorian age. From American senators to Indian social reformers, this new mental science found supporters stretching around the globe. Materials of the Mind tells the story of how phrenology changed the world--and how the world changed phrenology. This is a story of skulls from the Arctic, plaster casts from Haiti, books from Bengal, and letters from the Pacific. Drawing on far-flung museum and archival collections, and addressing sources in six different languages, Materials of the Mind is the first substantial account of science in the nineteenth century as part of global history. It shows how the circulation of material culture underpinned the emergence of a new materialist philosophy of the mind, while also demonstrating how a global approach to history could help us reassess issues such as race, technology, and politics today.
