Chicago by J. Seymour Currey Pdf

Excerpt from Chicago: Its History and Its Builders, Vol. 2: A Century of Marvelous Growth The four years following the events narrated in the last chapter of the preceding volume were years of intense political excitement. The deep feeling of resentment prevailing throughout the North caused by the enactment of the Fugitive Slave law was not allayed but settled into a permanent conviction that slavery must be exterminated. Even Lincoln. had at last awakened from his conservatism and had declared that the country could not continue to exist "half slave and half free." Talk of disunion among the Southern statesmen already filled the air and one of the remembered phrases of Lincoln's "lost speech" was that memorable utterance, "We wont go out of the Union, and you shan't." Douglas had been the chief instrument in carrying through the bill organizing the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, one clause of which repealed the Missouri Compromise. This was May 30th, 1854. The Story of Chicago (Classic Reprint) by Joseph Kirkland Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of Chicago The best a historian can do is to approach accuracy before venturing upon publication; and, after publication, - to approach it more and more nearly; for to reach it is beyond his utmost scope. The degree in which he can do this latter is dependent on the trouble his readers may take in pointing out to him his errors of omission and commission. "A word to the wise is sufficient;" and these words are addressed to all who are interested enough to read, wise enough to criticise and friendly enough to correct, for the benefit of posterity, this "Story of Chicago." Through the kindness of friends, some valuable additions, emendations and corrections are possible in this Second Edition. It is hoped that others may be kindly furnished for future use. Discovery and Conquests of the Northwest With the History of Chicago, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by Rufus Blanchard Pdf

Excerpt from Discovery and Conquests of the Northwest With the History of Chicago, Vol. 2 of 2 The American colonists forged an advanced link in this chain when they astonished Europe by improvising new principles in national policy. That these princi ples were an improvement on the old is proven from the fact that, in substance, they have been adopted by the leading nations of Europe. In the westward course of empire the great North west poses as the ideal type of the principles essential to our integrity as a Nation. This is the last link in the chain, none of which are missing, in the pages of history, from Greece, across the Atlantic; and from its rugged shores to the Northwest. Here it is our mission to reproduce, on our own soil, with improvements, all that is worth copying in Europe. Chicago has begun this work here, and the records of this volume would be imperfect without their con temporary history.
