History of Morehouse College by Benjamin Brawley Pdf

Founded only two years after the end of the Civil War, Atlanta's Morehouse College to this day remains one of the few traditional men's colleges in the United States. Originally dedicated to an all-black student body that was focused on studying the ministry and education, today the school welcomes students of all races to a full range of liberal-arts studies. The extraordinary history of the school was first explored in 1917's *History of Morehouse College,* written by the then-dean of the college. From its founding and early presidents to the roster of illustrious alumni and their work through the early years of the 20th century, this is an important document of African-American history, and includes the school's original charter and lists of students and graduates from 1871 through 1916. African-American author and educator BENJAMIN GRIFFITH BRAWLEY (1882-1939) wrote extensively on black culture.

A Clashing of the Soul by Leroy Davis Pdf

John Hope (1868-1936), the first African American president of Morehouse College and Atlanta University, was one of the most distinguished in the pantheon of early-twentieth-century black educators. Born of a mixed-race union in Augusta, Georgia, shortly after the Civil War, Hope had a lifelong commitment to black public and private education, adequate housing and health care, job opportunities, and civil rights that never wavered. Hope became to black college education what Booker T. Washington was to black industrial education. Leroy Davis examines the conflict inherent in Hope's attempt to balance his joint roles as college president and national leader. Along with his good friend W. E. B. Du Bois, Hope was at the forefront of the radical faction of black leaders in the early twentieth century, but he found himself taking more moderate stances in order to obtain philanthropic funds for black higher education. The story of Hope's life illuminates many complexities that vexed African American leaders in a free but segregated society.

The Future of Historically Black Colleges and Universities by Carolyn O. Wilson Mbajekwe Pdf

Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) were originally founded to provide the educational opportunities that other post-secondary schools had denied to black Americans. Today these schools face new challenges, and how they respond is shaped in large part by the men and women at the helm. Ten HBCU presidents speak out in this volume, addressing the fundamental issues confronting minority higher education. They discuss the historical role of black colleges; the current mission of HBCUs; and the effects of diversity programs, minority recruiting goals and globalization. Other topics include the impact of technology on college classrooms and the priorities and challenges in fundraising and development. Each chapter is devoted to the comments of one of the ten educators, and each includes a brief professional biography. An appendix includes profiles of historically black institutions.
