History of Nebraska, Fourth Edition by Ronald C. Naugle,James C. Olson,John J. Montag Pdf

History of Nebraska was originally created to mark the territorial centennial of Nebraska and then revised to coincide with the statehood centennial. This one-volume history quickly became the standard text for the college student and reference for the general reader, unmatched for generations as the only comprehensive history of the state. This fourth edition, revised and updated, preserves the spirit and intelligence of the original. Incorporating the results of years of scholarship and research, this edition gives fuller attention to such topics as the Native American experience in Nebraska and the accomplishments and circumstances of the state’s women and minorities. It also provides a historical analysis of the state’s dramatic changes in the past two decades.

Theodore Sorensen and the Kennedys by Michelle A. Ulyatt Pdf

Of the hundreds of books written about John F. Kennedy, none have yet taken the full measure of the role that Theodore Sorensen played in shaping his presidency. Serving as President Kennedy’s speechwriter from 1952 until 1963, Sorensen was a key advisor in the White House and a gatekeeper of the Kennedy legacy in the years after his assassination. This book presents a compelling portrait of Sorensen’s life and place in the American political landscape. He became an outspoken critic of corruption in politics, a vocal opponent of the militarist foreign policy approach that successive administrations adopted, and an advisor to Democratic presidential candidates such as Robert F. Kennedy and Barack Obama. Taking up questions about the role of presidential advisors and the concept of public service, an ideal that was central to the most famous of the speeches that Sorensen wrote for President Kennedy, Michelle A. Ulyatt offers new insight into Sorensen’s influence on the Kennedy years and the generation of leaders who came after.

Lincoln in Lists by Thomas R. Flagel Pdf

More books have been written about Abraham Lincoln than perhaps any other figure in Western civilization, save Jesus of Nazareth, and with so much material available on Lincoln, it can be difficult to sift through all the biographies and recollections to get at the essence of one of the great Americans of all time. In this book—both history and biography, informative as well as entertaining, meant to be read in whole or in bite-sized chunks—historian Thomas Flagel distills the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln in twenty-five annotated lists. Flagel’s lists present a cross-section of Lincoln’s life, career, and presidency: —Homes and jobs —Mentors, friends, and allies —Books and readings —Legal cases —Acts as an Illinois state representative and U.S. congressman —Best and worst days as president —Favorite sanctuaries in Washington, DC —Monuments, memorials, and historic sites —Greatest speeches and addresses —And more For uninitiated readers, these lists offer a quick but informative (and informed) entrée into Abraham Lincoln. For buffs and historians, the lists will be the starting point for debates and arguments. For everyone, Flagel’s annotated lists present an opportunity for readers to draw their own conclusions about Lincoln, based on the facts of his life. In these twenty-five lists, Flagel offers a unique lens through which to view our sixteenth president.

Colorado: A History of the Centennial State, Fourth Edition by Thomas J. Noel,Carl Abbott,Stephen J. Leonard Pdf

Since 1976 newcomers and natives alike have learned about the rich history of the magnificent place they call home from Colorado: A History of the Centennial State. In this revised edition, co-authors Carl Abbott, Stephen J. Leonard, and Thomas J. Noel incorporate more than a decade of new events, findings, and insights about Colorado in an accessible volume that general readers and students will enjoy. The fourth edition tells of conflicts, new alliances, and changing ways of life as Hispanic, European, and African American settlers flooded into a region that was already home to Native Americans. Providing balanced coverage of the entire state's history - from Grand Junction to Lamar and from Trinidad to Craig - the authors also reveal how Denver and its surrounding communities developed and gained influence. While continuing to elucidate the significant impact of mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism on Colorado, this edition broadens its coverage. The authors expand their discussion of the twentieth century with several new chapters on the economy, politics, and cultural conflicts of recent years. In addition, they address changes in attitudes toward the natural environment as well as the contributions of women, Hispanics, African Americans, and Asian Americans to the state. Dozens of new illustrations, updated statistics, and an extensive bibliography of the most recent research on Colorado history enhance this edition.

Conquest and Survival in Colonial Guatemala, Fourth Edition by W. George Lovell Pdf

Conquest and Survival in Colonial Guatemala examines the impact of Spanish conquest and colonial rule on the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, a frontier region of Guatemala adjoining the country’s northwestern border with Mexico. While Spaniards penetrated and left an enduring mark on the region, the vibrant Maya culture they encountered was not obliterated and, though subjected to considerable duress from the sixteenth century on, endures to this day. This fourth edition of George Lovell’s classic work incorporates new data and recent research findings and emphasizes native resistance and strategic adaptation to Spanish intrusion. Drawing on four decades of archival foraging, Lovell focuses attention on issues of land, labour, settlement, and population to unveil colonial experiences that continue to affect how Guatemala operates as a troubled modern nation. Acclaimed by scholars across the humanities and social sciences, Conquest and Survival in Colonial Guatemala remains a seminal account of the impact of Spanish colonialism in the Americas and a landmark contribution to Mesoamerican studies.

Excerpt: ...before his death, Mrs. Randolph, one of the passengers in the stage coach that day, placed upon his finger a beautiful gold ring with these words engraved upon it: E. Umphry, G. C. Randolph and Hattie P. Randolph to ROBERT EMERY in remembrance of what we owe to his cool conduct and good driving on Tuesday, August 9, 1864. A STAGE COACH HERO OF THE LITTLE BLUE 141 And, looking at the ring, this stage coach hero of the Little Blue gave up the lines at the end of his last drive. QUESTIONS 1. Have you ever seen a stage coach? Have you ridden in one? 2. In what respects is a stage coach journey better fun than a journey by railroad? 3. Was Robert Emery just the kind of a man to drive a stage coach? Why? 4. What are such men as Robert Emery doing to-day? THE PRAIRIE FIRE ALL Nebraska was one great field of wild grass in the early days. A few trees grew along the streams and in the ravines. All the rest was grass. In the heat of summer the short grass dried on its roots. When the frosts of early fall came the tall, green grasses were killed. Then the autumn winds blew and the grass everywhere was dead and very dry. Prairie fires burned in this great ocean of dry grass every fall and spring. Indians or white hunters or campers started them. Once started a fire spread on and on until a rain fell or until it reached a river too wide for it to jump. One of the great dangers to the early settlers was from the prairie fire. To protect their homes and stacks from its ravages they broke a narrow strip of sod around them, then, at some distance inside of that, another narrow strip and burned the grass between. This was called a "fireguard." It was usually from four to eight rods wide. It would stop any common fire and keep the settler's house...
