History of Slavery in Virginia (Classic Reprint) by James Curtis Ballagh Pdf

Excerpt from History of Slavery in Virginia It is recognized that Objective views of the local character of slavery in every division of the present United States where it has existed are prerequisite to its true history in this country. My wish has been to contribute to this end by a careful investigation of the institution as it existed in one of these, Virginia, with a candid statement of results. The priority of this colony and the long coexistence there of forms of dependence give unusual interest and value to its institutional experience, and make it the natural starting point of the general inquiry. The Free Negro in Virginia by John Henderson Russell Pdf

Excerpt from The Free Negro in Virginia: 1619-1865 The history of the free negro' in the slave States forms one of the most interesting chapters in the history of slavery in this country. A number of valuable monographs dealing with the history of the negro or with the institution of slavery in; the various States have been published during recent years, but no one of them, so far as the author is aware, has been devoted exclusively to the status or history of the antebellum free negro in a particular Commonwealth of-the Uni-ou. Such studies are needed, and it is hoped that the present monograph will, as far as Virginia is concerned, supply this need. Moreover, as a study of the free negro in the State in which the African first made his appearance in America, it should' supply some of the facts upon which the history of the negro race in the United States must be based. Upon the constitutional side it is hoped that the study will be an aid to a correct conception of the purposes sought to be realized by the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment. The White Slave by Richard Hildreth Pdf

Excerpt from The White Slave: Or Memoirs of a Fugitive, a Story of Slave Life in Virginia, Etc Mine are no silken sorrows, nor sentimental sufferings, hat that stern reality of actual woe, the story of which may, perhaps, touch even some of those, who are every day themselves the authors of misery the same that I endured. For however the practice of tyranny may have deadened every better emotion, and the prejudices of education and interest may have hardened the heart, humanity will still extort an involuntary tribute; and men will grow uneasy at hearing of those deeds, of which the doing does not cost them a moment's inquietude. Slavery and the War by Henry Darling Pdf

Excerpt from Slavery and the War: A Historical Essay From the commencement of that internecine war, which is now raging with so much fury in our country, the faith that it would eventuate in the entire destruction of American slavery was, with many good men, strong. They had long stood appalled before this gigantic national evil, afraid almost to utter in words the sentiments of condemnation that were burning in their hearts, and entirely unable to see how any exodus was to be opened for the enslaved. The problem was too profound for human solution. Girt around with constitutional defenses, and its righteousness maintained by the teachings of almost every pulpit in the South, an institution, once universally confessed to be but temporary, and destined before the march of civilization and religion to pass away, seemed fast imbedding itself indissolubly, into the very structure of a large part of American society. But how changed was the whole aspect of this question, the very moment that this great national sin, in its vaulting ambition, grappled with liberty, and sought to hurl into the dust, the very institutions that had fostered its greatness! Timid philanthropists and religionists then saw, at once, that God had taken this problem, so insoluble with them, into His hands, and that now again, in the eyes of all the nations, would that prophecy of Christ be fulfilled - "All they that take the sword shall perish with the sword." Doubtless at the outset, this expectation of the final issue was, as to the mode of its accomplishment, vague. Men walked to this sublime conclusion by a simple faith. Unable to believe that the purpose of God in permitting this rebellion was our national ruin, but seeing in it His design to cleanse and purify us, in what other direction could the process extend but in this? True, slavery was not our only national sin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Virginia's Attitude Toward Slavery and Secession (Classic Reprint) by Beverley B. Munford Pdf

Excerpt from Virginia's Attitude Toward Slavery and Secession N o attempt has been made to present the causes which precipitated the secession of the Cotton States, nor the states which subsequently adopted the same policy, except Virginia. Even in regard to that commonwealth the effort has been limited to the consideration of two features prominent in the public mind as constituting the most potent factors in determining her action - namely, devo tion to slavery and hostility to the Union. That the people of Virginia were moved to secession by aselfish desire to extend or maintain the institution of slavery, or from hostility to the Union, are propositions seemingly at variance with their whole history and the interests which might naturally have controlled them in the hour of separation. Yet how widespread the impression and how frequent the suggestion from the pen of historian and publicist that the great and compelling motives which led Virginia to secede were a desire to extend slavery into the territories and to safeguard the institution within her own borders, coupled with a spirit of hostility to the Union and the ideals of liberty proclaimed by its founders. To present the true attitude of the dominant element of the Virginia people with respect to these subjects is the work which the author has taken in hand. As cognate to this purpose the effort has been made to show what was the proximate cause which influenced the great body of the Virginia people in the hour of final decision. There were unquestionably many and widely severed causes - some remote in origin and some imme diate to the hour, yet it may be safely asserted that but for the adoption by the Federal Government of the policy of coercion towards the Cotton States, Virginia would not have seceded. That was the crucial and determining factor, which impelled her secession. She denied the right of the Federal Government to defeat by force of arms the aspiration of a people as numerous and united as those of the Cotton States to achieve in peace their independence. She believed that such a course and the exercise of such a power on the part of the Federal Govern ment, if not actually beyond the scope of its powers as fixed in the constitution, were clearly repugnant to the ideals of the Republic, and subversive of the principles for which their Fathers had fought and won the battles of the Revolution. Upon the question, shall the Cotton States be permitted to withdraw in peace, or shall their aspira tions be defeated by force of arms, Virginia assumed no new position. She simply in the hour of danger and sacrifice held faithful to the principles which she had oft times declared and which have ever found sturdy defenders in every part of the Republic. Local Institutions of Virginia (Classic Reprint) by Edward Ingle Pdf

Excerpt from Local Institutions of Virginia Supreme, slaves were Objects of pity; and labor, being almost entirely in their hands, was despised. In some cases great cruelty was inflicted upon these unfortunate beings, whose greatest ill was their lack of personal liberty. This was especially the case, if they were left to the entire control of overseers, or became restless, for Virginians were in constant dread Of concerted attacks by their Helots. But it was to the owner's interest, to say the least, for his property to be well preserved and productive, and consequently for his slaves to be free from maltreatment or injury. One other character remains to be mentioned - the Indian, who disappeared leav ing a trail Of fire and blood, but making no impression upon the character Of the colonists save in regard to their language which he enriched with soft-sounding words. The most pa thetic spectacle in history, next to the sudden turning of the electric glare Of the nineteenth century upon the benighted negro slave, is that of the Indian sullenly yielding step by by step to the Onward crush of a stronger civilization. Turning from the study Of the various races that lived in the colony, let us consider the life and occupations of the dominant people. As is the custom now, so in colonial times Englishmen and other visitors to this country felt called upon on their return home to write a book about America. From the account of one of those chroniclers the following picture Of a planter's life is drawn. Though written after the colony had become a State, it may be safely viewed as representing to the traveller's mind ante - Revolutionary manners: The gen tleman Of fortune rises about nine O'clock; he perhaps may make an excursion to walk as far as his stables to see his horses, which is seldom more than fifty yards from his house, he re turns to breakfast between nine and ten, which is generally tea or coffee, bread and butter, and very thin slices of venison, ham or hung beef. He then lies down on a pallet on the floor, in the coolest room in the house, in his shirt and trousers only, with a negro at his head and another at his feet to fan him and keep off the flies, between twelve and one he takes a draught of bombo or toddy, a liquor composed Of115. Letter to the Hon. Wm; C. Rives, of Virginia by Nathan Appleton Pdf

Excerpt from Letter to the Hon. Wm; C. Rives, of Virginia: On Slavery and the Union My Dear Sir, - I have read with great satisfaction your letter published in the Richmond Whig, on "The Present Crisis and the Value of the Union." Agreeing with you that it is the duty of every good citizen, so far as may lay in his power, to allay the existing excitement, and to endeavor to bring us back to that state of fraternal feeling under which the North and the South mutually shed their blood to bring this nation into existence, and which for so many years harmonized in its unparalleled prosperity, I address this letter to you, and through you, to the public. I have, for many years, been retired from an active participation in public affairs, but have not been unobservant of the course of events; and, drawing to the close of a long life, can have no motive but to leave to my children the blessings of a free and stable government, which I have myself so long enjoyed. The present is a period of alarm and excitement greater than we have heretofore witnessed. The North and the South appear in all but hostile array against each other, and all growing out of the subject of Slavery. Anti-Slavery in Virginia by Anonim Pdf

Excerpt from Anti-Slavery in Virginia: Extracts From Thos; Jefferson, Gen. Washington and Others Relative to the "Blighting Curse of Slavery"; Debates on the "Nat Turner Insurrection," Queries by William Crane, &C From Jefferson's "Notes on Virginia" written 1781. Query xviii: The whole commerce between master and slave is a perpetual exercise of the most boisterous passions, the most unrelenting despotism on the one part, and degrading submission on the other. Our children sec this, and learn to imitate it, for man is an imitative animal. This quality is the germ of all education in him. From his cradle to his grave, lie is learning to do what he sees others do. If a parent could find no motive, either in his philanthropy or his self-love, for restraining the intemperance of passion towards his slave, it should always be a sufficient one that his child is present. But generally, it is not sufficient. The parent storms; the child looks on, catches the lineaments of wrath, puts on the same airs in the circle of smaller slaves, gives a loose tongue to the worst of his passions, and, thus nursed, educated, and daily exercised in tyranny, cannot but be stamped with odious peculiarities. The man must he a prodigy who can retain his manners and his morals undopraved by such circumstances. And with what execration should the statesman be loaded, who, permitting one-half the citizens thus to trample on the rights of the other, transforms those into despots and these into enemies, destroys the morals of the one part, and the amor patria of the other.
