A History of the French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 3 (Classic Reprint) by H. Morse Stephens Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the French Revolution, Vol. 2 of 3 I regret, but can hardly apologize for, the delay in the publication of the present Volume. A Paradise haunts the dreams of the Historian, as well as of the Lover and the Fool. To glide through happy, laborious years in the eloquent silence of his library, free from the necessity for that ungrateful literary drudgery, from which he escapes only by fits and starts - in feverish haste, the balance and continuity of his ideas well-nigh lost, - to some cherished work, often laid aside, long neglected, and at last almost despaired of; to feel himself, as it were, a lily of the field, neither bound to toil nor spin Solomon-raiment for himself, but only for his thoughts; to enjoy the inestimable boon of scholarly leisure, roaming through archives and collections, with no call to grudge the hours which slip by as one investigation branches off into a hundred equally as enticing, ruminating some doubtful point, or rounding some awkward period in his twilight garden or beside his friendly study fire; to concentrate his every thought upon the magnum opus, towards which all his studies have for years been tending, which he sees daily growing under his pen, big with the promise of future fame; ever busily improving, reviewing, and revising, till shortly he becomes his best, and gives of his best to the world, and of his best only. History of the French Revolution of 1848, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by Alphonse De Lamartine Pdf

Excerpt from History of the French Revolution of 1848, Vol. 2 The announcement of a History of the Revolution of 1848, by the author of Les Girondins, who has been admired as the hero of that great event, was speedily followed by the publication of the book at Paris. An early copy of the work having been placed by us in the hands of the translators, they commenced their task at short notice, and under a pledge of rapid execution. Yet, in fulfilling the latter condition, they were to endeavor conscientiously to avoid injustice to the original. As far as possible, they have aimed to render every phrase of the historian by its equivalent in English, and not a line of his has been suppressed. The difficulties encountered can be fully appreciated only by those who are aware how completely the resources of the French, that flexible and copious language, have been exhausted by the ingenuity and genius of Lamartine, and how difficult it is to grasp some of his poetical and philosophical ideas and expressions. With these brief remarks, this brilliant contribution to the historical literature of the nineteenth century is submitted, in a separated form, to the candor and discernment of the American public. The History of the French Revolution by M. A. Thiers, Late Prime Minister of France, Vol. 3 of 4 by Frederick Shoberl Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution by M. A. Thiers, Late Prime Minister of France, Vol. 3 of 4: Translated With Notes and Illustrations From the Most Authentic Sources Herault-sechelles, and had not suffered Prieur of La Marne and Jean Bon St. Andre to be continually absent on missions, they would have been more certain of having a majority, and not have hesitated so long about attacking the triumvirs. He then asserted that men became wearied out by power, and contracted dangerous tastes from the possession of it. He proposed, in consequence, to decree that thenceforward no member of the committees should be authorized to go on mission, and that one-fourth of the members of each com mittee should be renewed every month. Cambon, carrying the discussion still farther, said that the entire government ought to be reorganized. The committee of public welfare had, in his Opinion, usurped everything; the consequence was that its members, were they even to labour night and day, could not perform their task, and that the committees of finance, of legislation, and of general safety were reduced to mere ciphers. It was necessary to make a new distribution of powers, so as to prevent the committee of public welfare from being over loaded, and the others from being annulled. The French Revolution by Shailer Mathews Pdf

Excerpt from The French Revolution: A Sketch For the student of society, the few years that elapsed between the assembling of the States General and the appearance of Napoleon Bonaparte afford material altogether unequaled for a study in social psychology. Few indeed were the political theories and proposals for social amelioration that were not then tried. Nor dares one say that these attempts of philosophers so desperately in earnest to bring in liberty and equality were altogether futile. Because of the constructive genius of Napoleon, they had lasting and, in the main, beneficial results. But there were few of the reform movements then inaugurated that were given anything like normal conditions for trial. Revolutions are not the best means by which to bring about permanent reforms, any more than fevers are the best means of bringing about improvement in one's health; but they are not pathological. No decaying people has vitality enough to carry through a revolt to such constitutional changes as make it worthy the name of revolution. In France, just as in America a few years before, and in England in the preceding century, revolution was the outcome of national convalescence, of a socialized conviction of injustice, and of a universal determination to install justice.
