History of the Scottish Church, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by W. Stephen Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Scottish Church, Vol. 2 The author has much reason to be gratified with the criticisms of the press on the first volume of his history. His statement in the preface that he did not profess to be colourless in his opinions, was interpreted by some critics as an admission that he had written in the spirit and with the design of a partisan. He submits that the words were susceptible of a different interpretation. The writer of Church history, who is aware of his own bias in things ecclesiastical, is the more likely to be on his guard against it, and to steer an even course between divergent lines of historical representation. This has been his honest endeavour in the second volume as in the first. But as the modern period, now brought under review, bristles with controversial matter over which historians have disputed from the Reformation downwards, he has no very sanguine expectation that his treatment of it will escape the charge of partisanship from extreme men of any school. To succeed in satisfying such as are themselves partisans would assuredly be the clearest proof of partisanship. The author desires to express his obligations to the Rev. George Sutherland, Portsoy, the Rev. J. C. Barry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Church History of Scotland, From the Commencement of the Christian Era to the Present Century, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by John Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from The Church History of Scotland, From the Commencement of the Christian Era to the Present Century, Vol. 1 of 2 Our best Scottish Ecclesiastical Histories are confined to particular periods. Indeed, so far as I know, there is not one which will conduct the student from the epoch of Christianity to the day in which he lives. This is the task I have undertaken; but in traversing this long tract of time I have naturally lingered longest on those periods which are either most interesting or most instructive. A Handbook of the Church of Scotland (Classic Reprint) by James Rankin Pdf

Excerpt from A Handbook of the Church of Scotland Besides many paragraphs inserted here and there to improve the original plan of the Handbook, three entire chapters (I. II. X.) are now added to extend the plan, so that the Church of Scotland may be seen and judged in its relation not only to modern Dissent but also to the whole Christian history of our forefathers. It is hoped that an outline of the two forms of earlier ecclesiastical constitution will enable the reader better to appreciate some of the features of the Church of Scotland which come to it by historical continuity. The wider view thus gained of the Church in its real relation to past and present, is fitted to make its members more zealous in its defence, and to lead rivals or enemies (those at least whose minds are open to reason and fact, and who prefer patriotism and unity to party and sect), to reconsider their recent policy of persecution, misrepresentation, and overthrow. Originally the Handbook was written in 1879 for the purpose of Church defence, to counteract the organised system of attack (for a series of years, and with large expenditure) directed against the Church, chiefly by the "Liberation Society." History of the Scottish Episcopal Church by John Parker Lawson Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Scottish Episcopal Church: From the Revolution to the Present Time In submitting this Volume to the Public the Author does so with very great diffidence, and he wishes to be distinctly understood that the Church of which he is a humble member is not to be held responsible for any opinions or inferences he advances. Although it is hoped that nothing herein recorded is at variance with the principles of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Author wishes this to be candidly kept in view by all, whether friends or foes, into whose hands this volume may fall, on the same principle that it would be illiberal to consider the Presbyterian Establishment at large as identified with such works as the "History of the Church of Scotland," by Mr Hetherington of Torphichen, or that all its members approved of the commemoration of the Glasgow General Assembly of 1638, held in Edinburgh in 1838, when very offensive and insulting remarks were uttered towards the Church of England, the Scottish Episcopal Church, and the Church at large; and a feeble and unsuccessful attempt made on the part of certain Presbyterian leaders to revive the bigotry, the prejudices, and the intolerance of the Covenanting times. In this historical narrative the Author has as much as possible refrained from controversy, and confined himself solely to facts and to what appeared the legitimate deductions. Excerpt from The Church in Scotland: A History of Its Antecedents, Its Conflicts, and Its Advocates, From the Earliest Recorded Times to the First Assembly of the Reformed Church Hector Boece in the fifteenth, and adhered to by subsequent historians until very recent years. A Story of the Church in Scotland by John Macpherson Pdf

Excerpt from A Story of the Church in Scotland: From the Earliest Times Down to the Present Day IN this volume an endeavour has been made to render a comprehensive account of ecclesiastical and religious move ments in Scotland from the original planting of Christianity down to the close of the nineteenth century. Avoiding as far as possible details of civil history, attention has been given to Acts of Parliament and contrivances of statesmen only in so far as these have affected the interests of the Church in regard to its government and constitution. In so wide a field it is perhaps too much to expect that the attempt to maintain a fair proportion in the narrative, and strict impartiality of statement, has been altogether suc cessful. But the author has not intentionally passed over anything that should have been told to the credit of any of the denominations that have existed or may yet exist in the Scottish ecclesiastical world; and he has sought to deal faithfully and generously with the memories of the great men who in all the various divisions of the Church in Scot land have contributed to the theological literature and to the religious life of the country.
