History of the Second Advent Message and Mission, Doctrine and People (Classic Reprint) by Isaac Cummings Wellcome Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Second Advent Message and Mission, Doctrine and People We felt incompetent to select, from the mass of facts connected with this theological and religious revolution. Such portions as were most important for the public, and prepare such a work as the merits of the cause demand and as should be produced from the abundant material at hand: and we have long waited in hope that, as time lingered, some man of literary ability, with a liv ing interest in this subject, would write a history. Several have proposed to do so, but did not; perhaps it presented too many complicated phases. Without any, claim to literary attainments, we have entered upon the work, believing duty led in that direction, and here present the results of our efforts, in the following pages. Not for the eye of the literary critic, but for the study, information, and contemplation of sober thinkers. It contains a large amount of valuable information for all Christian students, whether they ao cept all the views of Advent believers or not. We have aimed to collect the most important historical matters and many valuable criticisms bearing on the subject at issue, whether they favored our views or otherwise. Second Advent History by Isaac Cummings Wellcome Pdf

As part of the Adventist Classic Library, this volume includes a facsimile reproduction of Isaac C. Wellcome's 1874 publication History of the Second Advent Message and Mission, Doctrine and People. Wellcome, a member of the Advent Christian branch of Adventists, produced this first general history of the movement that had promoted the belief that the Second Advent of Jesus would take place on October 22, 1844. Though primarily a historical narrative of the Millerite movement and an important source of information about early Adventism, Wellcome's work also includes much theological discussion. His book, as historian Gary Land observes, is "a significant example of the Advent Christian side in the struggle to claim the mantle of William Miller." Wellcome's book records his own personal memories and those of others, includes biographical sketches of more than thirty-five Millerite and Advent Christian leaders, and provides quotations and lengthy extracts from other early published Advent materials, many of which no longer exist in original form. This volume provides a scholarly introductory essay by Gary Land which presents a biographical sketch of Isaac Wellcome, early Millerite historiography, and some discussion of Wellcome as a historian and later Advent Christian historians as well. Also included in this reprint edition are a name index and a general index which should serve as a guide to the most prominent subjects and persons discussed in Wellcome's volume.

The Great Second Advent Movement by John Norton Loughborough Pdf

J.N. Loughborough was involved in the Advent movement from its early days, having been called to preach by E.G. White in 1852. During his years of service in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he worked in New England, Michigan, Ohio, Great Britain, and California. In 1902 Loughborough published an account of the message and history of Seventh-day Adventism titled The Rise and Progress of the Third Angel's Message. Unfortunately, the book was lost when the Review and Herald burned in 1903. Starting over from scratch, Loughborough wrote a new book titled The Great Second Advent Movement that was published in 1905. In it he provides personal testimony and insight into the history of the church, the visions and prophecies of Ellen White, early divisions in the church, and various philosophical and religious matters, as well as some autobiographical material.

The Midnight Cry by Francis D. Nichol Pdf

This work gives a detailed history and defense of the Advent Movement of the 1840's known as Millerism, the movement from which the Seventh-day Adventist denomination sprang. The book is based on original sources, William Miller's correspondence, contemporaneous books, pamphlets, journals, newspapers. The first half is devoted to the history of the movement, and the second half to an examination of charges made against the Advent believers, such as that they wore ascension robes, that the Millerite preaching filled the asylums, and so forth.

A History of the Apocalypse by Catalin Negru Pdf

Religion. For thousands of years this thing has dictated which people should live and which people should die, what shape our buildings should have or what colors our garments should contain, what food people should eat or what words people should speak. If religion is the opium of the masses, then beliefs about the end of the world are like overdoses. People touched by such beliefs no longer rely on a hidden, personal and intimate god, contemplated upon from the safe distance of the beating human heart. They live with the promise of divine intervention at a grand scale on the current coordinates of space and time. This can be an exceptional motivator and a game changer in terms of civil obedience, both at an individual and collective level. In the name of an immediate and palpable deity people can commit shocking cruelties. However, such belief can also account for some of the most exceptional social developments in human history.
