In response to HIV/AIDS and its consequences, this collection of essays by young African scholars proposes a pattern of Christian education designed to equip churches for ministry in a time of crisis. Integrating HIV-related Content Into a Competency-based Curriculum by WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific Pdf

The current challenge represented by the AIDS epidemic demands the involvement and continued commitment of nurses. Nursing services are required in the areas of human resources management, community development, and the provision of health and social services. This booklet, prepared by the World Health Organization's Western Pacific Region, outlines curricula that will ensure nurses have the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to promote the prevention of HIV infection and provide clinical care to AIDS patients. The first section covers the integration of HIV/AIDS content into the basic nursing curriculum and presents a competency-based approach to curriculum development. The second section presents curriculum guidelines for formal education after the basic program, while the third suggests guidelines for planning continuing education through workshops and seminars. This is the sixth in a series of booklets that comprise the HIV/AIDS Reference Library for Nurses.

Act Smart. HIV by American National Red Cross, Washington, DC. Pdf

This Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) education curriculum was developed for boys and girls, ages 6 to 17 years. It is a supplement to a similar program, "SMART Moves," aimed at prevention of drug abuse and premature sexual activity. The Act SMART prevention team should consist of a staff facilitator certified by the American Red Cross as an HIV/AIDS instructor, youth peer leaders, and community volunteers. The program incorporates age-appropriate participatory learning activities, and it emphasizes sexual abstinence, not using drugs, and not sharing needles as the most effective ways to prevent HIV infection. For those already engaging in sexual activity, it provides information on condom use and HIV/AIDS prevention. Overall program goals are to increase knowledge, examine personal risk behaviors and choices, develop the skills needed to practice and maintain healthy behaviors, and increase comfort when interacting with HIV positive or AIDS infected persons. Unit 1 focuses on emphasizing healthy behaviors and positive feelings about oneself for children ages 6 to 9 years. Unit 2 focuses on making healthy decisions and examines risk-taking behavior for pre-teens ages 10-13 years. Unit 3 offers a comprehensive skills approach to HIV/AIDS prevention for adolescents ages 14-17 years. Implementation strategies suggest involving the Boards of the American Red Cross Chapters and the local chapters of the Boys and Girls Clubs, peer leaders, and parents with in-service community training by a certified HIV/AIDS instructor. Appendices provide general information, sample letters, glossary, and activity suggestions. (NAV)

Humanizing Pedagogy Through HIV and AIDS Prevention by American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Pdf

This book explores the power of educators to serve as HIV and AIDS prevention agents. The definitive text represents the work of a distinguished panel of teacher educators and health scientists who identify core information and skills effective educators of HIV and AIDS prevention should learn as they are prepared to attend to the academic and human needs of students. It assigns to teachers, in the US and abroad, the novel role of prevention agents, given their extraordinary ability to access and affect young people -- to influence their behavior. Humanizing Pedagogy considers the social, economic, racial, gender and other variables that impact the prevention of HIV and AIDS. The authors collectively assert that the process of preventing HIV and AIDS, when it considers historic and social context, can compel educators to serve not only as practitioners of knowledge, but as community agents of health and well being. Attending to HIV and AIDS issues advances the capacity and ability of educators to see and attend to the complete learner. Humanizing Pedagogy is a single volume resource for educators, in the US and abroad, interested in attending to the whole needs of the learner-and saving lives.

Performative Praxis by Jean Baxen Pdf

It is widely recognized that the South African government's exemplary HIV/AIDS education policy is not making the behaviour-changing impact that it ought. Why is this? What is actually happening in the school classroom? In this book, Jean Baxen makes an important contribution towards understanding the complex interface between the HIV/AIDS education curriculum and what and how teachers are teaching in the classroom. Bringing Judith Butler's theory of performativity to bear in an analysis of the pedagogic practice of a number of teachers in the Western Cape and Mpumalanga, the author shows how teachers' personal conception of their role and identity as educators plays a vitally important role in filtering and shaping the classroom transmission of key information and attitudes.
