The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paedology, Vol. 12 by A. L. Chatterton Pdf

Excerpt from The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paedology, Vol. 12: January, 1890 In groping about in my mind for a text upon which to build this paper, there was ever present with me the feeling that this society was entitled to my best and what better could I offer it than the plain tale of my own commonplace experience. It is of this, therefore, that I would speak; of midwifery services rendered mainly to the humble, the dis tressed, the blighted services hardly worth recounting for their own sake; but that which has cost me ten thousand hours of anxiety may furnish one hour's interest to you. The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paedology, 1891, Vol. 13 (Classic Reprint) by A. L. Chatterton Pdf

Excerpt from The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paedology, 1891, Vol. 13 When the first few successful experiments with ether and chloroform had been published to the world, forty years ago, it was but a few months till they were in use in every civilized country on the globe, and scarce two years till a surgical operation of any importance without the aid of anesthesia was well nigh as rare a thing as it is now. It is now quite two score years since Sir James Y. Simpson's first successful experiments were made with chloroform in mid wifery, and yet it is doubtful if the solace of anesthesia is granted to one tenth Of the women in this country who, at the present day, are called upon to endure the pain of child birth, a pain which is in most cases much greater than the pain of any surgical Operation. There are several reasons for this, some well founded, and some based on sheer fogy ism. One thing is surely true and that is, that it is just as much a mercy to relieve the great pain of the parturient woman, as the no greater pain that must be endured by the subject of a surgical operation, and, provided it can be done as safely, it is just as imperative. The objections urged against the use Of anesthetics in ordinary cases of midwifery are that there is always some degree of danger in giving anesthetics, which is true, as every conscientious surgeon will admit, and it is further charged that the use Of anes thetics retards uterine contractions, and increases the ten deacy to post-partum hemorrhage, each of which charges may be admitted as perhaps true in some cases, but by no means as a rule. On. The contrary, it is a common experi ence to find the pulse improve and the pains grow more eflicient and regular as soon as enough chloroform or ether has been given to considerably numb the sensation and give freedom from pain and dread of pain in intervals. This is all the more true in those cases in which that feeling of dread anxiety, which is nearly always present in some degree, is especially great. I have never seen but two cases in which chloroform, carefully given, retarded the pains to any material extent. In one of these ether was well borne and did not seem to interfere with either the force or frequency Of the pains. In the other case the labor pains were very feeble and in frequent before chloroform was given, and the interval was decidedly lengthened by the exhibition Of the anesthetic. In ordinary cases the pains will not be retarded at all, but are, on the other hand, not infrequently increased in strength and the interval shortened. This eflect, I think, comes from the fact that the nervousness and dread of pain some times inhibits to some degree the oncoming uterine con traction, and again, the more complete rest which the pa tient has under chloroform allows for a quicker return Of the contraction and likewise for greater uterine force. The History of American Homeopathy by John Haller Pdf

Discover how homeopathic practice developed alongside regular medicine Explore the history of American homeopathy from its roots in the early nineteenth century, through its burgeoning acceptance, to its subsequent fall from favor. The History of American Homeopathy: The Academic Years, 1820-1935 discusses the development of homeopathy’s unorthodox therapies, the reasons behind its widespread growth and popularity, and its development during medicine’s introspective age of doubt and the emergence of scientific reductionism. Not only does the book explain homeopathy within the same social, scientific, and philosophic traditions that affected other schools of the healing art, but it also promotes a more integrative connection between homeopathy’s unconventional therapeutics and the rigors of scientific medicine. The History of American Homeopathy examines the work of Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy—the development of his and other practitioners’ theories, and the factors in the growth and later withering of acceptance. You’ll learn the reasons behind homeopathy’s wave of popularity in nineteenth-century America and the impact of regular medicine’s shift to rationalistic system-theories and laboratory science on homeopathy. Discover how homeopathy emerged from the system-theories of the late eighteenth century; the mounting ideological differences within this unorthodox health art; its destructive internal feuds; and the factors that led to the eventual turning over of homeopathies to regular medicine. The History of American Homeopathy answers questions such as: how did the state of medicine in the early nineteenth century facilitate the public acceptance of Hahnemann’s theories? what were the relationships between regualr medicine and homeopathy? what tensions surfaced between academic and domestic homeopathy? how did homeopathic medical schools emerge, and what were their regional and philosophical distinctions? what was the impact of scientific medicine on homeopathy? what were the reasons for the growing division between the liberal wing of homeopathy and the more conservative Hahnemannians, and what effect did it have on the movement? The History of American Homeopathy: The Academic Years, 1820-1935 is an informative, insightful exploration of homeopathy’s roots that is valuable for medical historians, history students, homeopaths, alternative medical organizations, holistic healing societies, homeopathic study groups, homeopathic seminars and courses, and anyone interested in homeopathy.

The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics Gynecology and Pedology, Vol. 18 (Classic Reprint) by B. F. Underwood Pdf

Excerpt from The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics Gynecology and Pedology, Vol. 18 I shall dwell first upon those cases in which fever is due to infection of the puerperal wounds. The diagnosis of septic infection is sometimes quite easy, and again it is shrouded in obscurity. The cases which are the most virulent are apt to have the fewest local symptoms upon which to base a diagnosis. In all cases of doubt it is advisable to make a visual inspection of the vulva, vagina, and cervix. Small white patches on.the raw surfaces may mark the site of infection and render the diagnosis clear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
