It is quite justly regarded as the very best ever made_ The little machine is clamped by the thumbscrew to a table. It pares and slices the fruit, and deposits the slices in a dish. Its operation is quick, efl'ective, certain, and simple. Can Opener.--One of the standing annoyances of housc keepers is the opening of cans containing fruits, vegetables, etc. It is certain that the ordinary tools employed for this purpose are very defective. They are hard to operate, dangerous to handle, and rough in results. The accompanying cut shows the Clipper Can Opener in position for service. It is screwed on to any convenient place. The table on which the can stands is adjusted by a ratchet movement to any height of can. The knife is curved to meet the circle of the can. It can easily be thrust through the tin, when, by a rotary motion, it will cut the top out, as cleanly as if cut by straight shears. This cutJ I ter is a specialty of the Cowles Hardware Co., of Unionville, Conn. bitter experience in every household. The Family Cherry Stoner, here shown, does the work very well, preserving the plumpness of the cherry and saving all its juices, but effectually removing its stone. There are other stoners in the market, but this in preserving the form of the cherry surpasses them all. It is as nearly perfect as any machine can be. It seems endowed with intelligence. A Colonial Woman's Bookshelf by Kevin J. Hayes Pdf

Despite major advances in women's history, literary history, and the history of the book, the intellectual life of women in colonial America has been a largely neglected area of scholarship. Kevin J. Hayes draws upon an impressive array of primary materials to describe in detail the kinds of books these women read and the reasons why they read them.

Making Gardens of Their Own: Advice for Women, 1550-1750 by Jennifer Munroe Pdf

During the period 1500-1750 a general shift in gardening practice took place, from which emerged three distinct types of gardens: (traditional) subsistence or kitchen gardens, aesthetic gardens, and gendered aesthetic gardens. The gardening and husbandry manuals published during the period, typified by the texts selected for this volume, reveal how and what one planted was related to one's role in society. These texts attest to the changing nature of gardening - from a largely subsistence endeavour to an artful practice that became defined in gendered terms. The texts reproduced have been divided into two parts: gardening books for the 'country' housewife and gardening books for 'ladies'.

This is a special issue of the journal American Studies. Ten papers examine the role of libraries in the communities they serve and in the lives of readers. They specifically discuss the library's relationship to noise, elitism, democracy, health, and gender. Contributors include scholars of American studies, library science, English, history, and communication. There is no index. There's a small discrepancy in the title shown on the cover and the one on the title page, which reads: "The Library as an Agency of Culture." The Influence of Japanese Art on Design by Hannah Sigur Pdf

During America's Gilded Age (dates), the country was swept by a mania for all things Japanese. It spread from coast to coast, enticed everyone from robber barons to street vendors with its allure, and touched every aspect of life from patent medicines to wallpaper. Americans of the time found in Japanese art every design language: modernism or tradition, abstraction or realism, technical virtuosity or unfettered naturalism, craft or art, romance or functionalism. The art of Japan had a huge influence on American art and design. Title compares juxtapositions of American glass, silver and metal arts, ceramics, textiles, furniture, jewelry, advertising, and packaging with a spectrum of Japanese material ranging from expensive one-of-a-kind art crafts to mass-produced ephemera. Beginning in the Aesthetic movement, this book continues through the Arts & Crafts era and ends in Frank Lloyd Wright's vision, showing the reader how that model became transformed from Japanese to American in design and concept. Hannah Sigur is an art historian, writer, and editor with eight years' residence and study in East and Southeast Asia. She has a master's degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is completing a PhD in the arts of Japan. Her writings include co-authoring A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (Timber Press, 2002), which is listed in "The Best Books of 2002" by The Christian Science Monitor and is now in its second edition; and "The Golden Ideal: Chinese Landscape Themes in Japanese Art," in Lotus Leaves, A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (2001). She lives in Berkeley.
