Hunting Africa by Angela Thompsell Pdf

This book recovers the multiplicity of meanings embedded in colonial hunting and the power it symbolized by examining both the incorporation and representation of British women hunters in the sport and how African people leveraged British hunters' dependence on their labor and knowledge to direct the impact and experience of hunting.

Safari 101 Hunting Africa: the Ultimate Adventure by David L. Brown Pdf

Mbogo, the Black Death, which manifests itself in the African Cape buffalo, now stood less than 12 feet away from me. The cow and calf were too close for me to have time to be scared. I would only have time to react on instinct if they came closer. That is the type of excitement that every hunter dreams of and it is still possible in Africa today. It is also one that I was fortunate enough to experience without any permanent ill effects. Eighty percent or more of American hunters think that Africa is too expensive or off-limits and that they will never have a chance to experience their own, up-close-and-personal adventure in the African bushveld. Safari 101 proves just the opposite. Safari 101 is written for the hunter that has always considered Africa out of reach, someone who has a spark of desire just waiting to be fanned into a flame. American hunters spend thousands of dollars every year hunting at home. Almost none of them know that, for the price of a guided elk hunt in the western United States, they can take an African Safari. The myths of being too expensive and too difficult are firmly entrenched in many hunters minds. Safari 101 has forty-six hints dispersed throughout 11 chapters and proves these myths false. Personal experiences are used to illustrate the value of each hint and to make each one easy to remember. Safari 101 takes the author's experiences, and what he learned from professional hunters and outfitters, and puts the information in a logical progression that is entertaining as well as informative. Safari 101 will help fan the spark into a flame.

Biltong Hunting as a Performance of Belonging in Post-Apartheid South Africa by Andre Goodrich Pdf

Since the early 1990s, the seventeen-fold growth in South African sport hunting has made the South African wildlife ranching industry the sixth largest contributor to South Africa’s agricultural sector, bringing in $680 million per annum. Biltong Hunting as a Performance of Belonging in Post-Apartheid South Africa links biltong hunting’s rapid growth to the 1990s disassembly of the apartheid state and analyzes how the hierarchy, and belonging that biltong hunters associate with it, emerges anew in the post-apartheid context. It examines the narrative and embodied strategies employed by hunters and farmers to create a space that naturalizes the mythic Afrikaner nationalist past in the post-apartheid present.

Teaching and Hunting in East Africa by Dan McNickle Pdf

"Lati knew his stuff and before the sun was high we were on the trail of a small herd. These elephant had fed into thick thorn scrub. We could hear them up ahead, close, but we couldn't see them as visibility was close to nil. I reached for some dirt to sift through my fingers and track the breezes. The elephant were almost stationary, languidly browsing. Judging from the contented purring of their stomachs, they had no idea we were there. We inched closer, the heat and the tension oppressive. Twenty yards; ten yards; ten feet. We could see them, but couldn't make out one end from the other, nor could we see any ivory. Big gray slabs of wrinkled hide was all that was discernable, and even that seemed to pulse and dance out of focus in the heat and thorn. Lati touched my shoulder, motioning to back off. At mid-day the breeze was bound to give us away. We backpedaled, guns ready...." The countries of East Africa were getting independence in the 1960's and the Teachers of East Africa Program, run by Columbia University, was one vehicle used to expand the staffing of the secondary schools so these countries could quickly muster the manpower necessary to run their own affairs. I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the teachers, and this book is the story of my four years spent in Tanzania: teaching, hunting and touring. In the process I had many wonderful experiences with the people, some close calls with the elephants, climbed an active volcano, presided over a polling station in the first Presidential election in Tanzania, and hunted with ear gatherers. I tried to skim Dan's book after we returned from Africa. But it's not the sort of piece you should skim. I really enjoyed all of it, but especially the writer's voice and consciousness -- young, male, enthusiastic, brash, reflective, smart, brave, appreciative and oh so full of life! I loved it! Dr. Rudy Martin, retired, Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington. I want to add that Dan's writing brought back for me the absolute beauty and wonder of East Africa.
