The Latin Hymn-Writers and Their Hymns (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Willoughby Duffield Pdf

Excerpt from The Latin Hymn-Writers and Their Hymns Samuel W. Dufiield was of the sixth American generation of his family. From his youth he was a young giant, with an inborn love of active sports, quick in movement, and apparently incapable of fatigue. His mind showed equal vigor and freshness, and he early developed a passion for poetry. By his tenth year he had mastered Chaucer, in spite Of difficulties much more serious to beginners in those days than in our own. And he very early began to find expression for his own ideas in verse. He united with the Church at the age of thirteen, when his father was a pastor in Philadelphia, being the only one who did so at the time, so that the act was the result of personal decision and not of a revival excitement. He graduated at Yale in 1863; and after teaching for a while, he began the study of theology under the care of his grandfather and his father. Not until after he had been licensed to preach, and had had charge of a mission in Chicago, did he present himself as a student in Union Theological Seminary. The Book of Praise by Roundell Palmer Selborne Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of Praise: From the Best English Hymn Writers The present is an attempt, not to add to the great and constantly increasing multitude of hymn-books intended for congregational use; but to present, under a convenient arrangement, a collection of such examples of a copious and interesting branch of popular literature, as, after a study of the subject which for several years has occupied part of his leisure hours, have seemed to the Editor most worthy of being separated from the mass to which they belong. Hymns Historically Famous (Classic Reprint) by Nicholas Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Hymns Historically Famous The purpose of this volume is twofold: To in epire a warmer love of Church song; and to make the reader better acquainted with that class of hymns which are noted for the history they have made. The special aim has been to take the more popular and useful of our familiar compositions and give a fuller and more connected story of the lives of the authors, the origin of the hymns, with incidents of interest and value illustrating their influence, than have yet appeared in any annotated hymnal either in America or Great Britain. Twenty-three chapters are devoted to Church hymns and gospel songs which have two common characteristics universal popularity, and the power to make spiritual history. Many hymns are historic solely because their origin is closely related to some striking event, or associated with some hallowed experience; and the rule governing the scope of the book has been re laxed that a few of those having particular merit, might be annotated. The chapter - Five Lay Hymn Writers - was inserted for two important reasons First, the position those consecrated laymen occupy in Church hymnody in all English-speaking coun tries, is unique; and, second, the hymns selected from their writings and printed in these pages, are of great poetic beauty, and add much to the pleasure and profitof public worship. There are many favorite hymns which are perfect in form, exquisite in thought and expression, and which no doubt interpret charming Christian experiences, but not being connected with noteworthy historical facts, they could not properly find a place in this volume. Biography of Gospel Song and Hymn Writers (Classic Reprint) by J. H. Hall Pdf

Excerpt from Biography of Gospel Song and Hymn Writers The author found that to insert all the worthy names of gospel song and hymn writers in a single volume would make it too bulky it is hoped it may be possible to follow this work with a second volume. Beginning with Dr. Lowell Mason, the writer has endeavored to give a sketch and portrait of leading representatives of gospel song and hymn writers up to the present time. It is but natural that people should wish to know something of the lives, and be pleased to see the por traits of the composers whose songs and hymns have brought joy, peace and comfort to their hearts. It is confidently anticipated that the reading of these brief sketches will add new life and power to the gospel in song. The author feels that in a measure Mr. J. 11. Our Hymns by Josiah Miller Pdf

Excerpt from Our Hymns: Their Authors and Origin, Being Biographical Sketches of Nearly Two Hundred of the Principal Psalm and Hymn-Writers, With Notes on Their Psalms and Hymns; A Companion to the New Congregational Hymn Book No apology is needed for a new book on Hymnology. Some authors have difficulty in proving that there is really room for their work, but it is not so with those who write on this comparatively neglected subject. In saying this, we do not overlook the valuable articles on this subject that have appeared recently in newspapers and reviews; nor the useful labours of Montgomery, Creamer, Holland, Gadsby, Belcher, and Sir Roundell Palmer; nor the more learned works of such writers as Daniel, Archbishop Trench, Dr. Mason Neale, and Dr. Bonar; yet it remains true that this theme, which is rising into notice, and which is of practical importance because of its connection with our private and public devotion, has not yet received a thorough treatment. This work is to be regarded only as a contribution to the subject. It is not an attempt to go over the whole field. The subject is so large that the writer found it necessary to fix some limit to his researches. He has confined himself to the authors whose psalms and hymns are contained in one of the most comprehensive and excellent of modern collections. That collection was compiled by a competent committee in London, who were occupied from 1855 to 1859 in its preparation. The English Hymn by Louis F. Benson Pdf

Excerpt from The English Hymn: Its Development and Use in Worship Just now we are not defending hymns but alleging the circumstances making it inevitable that anything in the line of a serious study of the English Hymn should be so long deferred, and that our English Hymnology should lag so far behind the German. Daniel Sedgwick, a self - taught second - hand bookseller of London (1814 was ac tually the first collector of the hymn books, and to his little shop in Sun-street, Bishopsgate, used to resort so many of the editors as cared enough for the hymns they were han dling to inquire into their authorship and text. And yet in a scientific age the collection and study of old psalm and hymn books, which are the remains and record of the spiritual life of contemporaneous Christians, would seem just as rational as the collection and classification of fossil shells, which are the remains and record of the animal life of contemporaneous mollusca. Really it has awakened, wrote a reader of one of the ensuing chapters, the sus picion that there is no better point of view from which to study the development and the reactions of Christian belief than that offered by Hymnody. This is not strange; for after all beliefs of the first rate in in uence receive and, I have the impression, always have received their best and final embodiment in poetry and especially lyric poetry.
