The Latin Hymn-Writers and Their Hymns (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Willoughby Duffield Pdf

Excerpt from The Latin Hymn-Writers and Their Hymns Samuel W. Dufiield was of the sixth American generation of his family. From his youth he was a young giant, with an inborn love of active sports, quick in movement, and apparently incapable of fatigue. His mind showed equal vigor and freshness, and he early developed a passion for poetry. By his tenth year he had mastered Chaucer, in spite Of difficulties much more serious to beginners in those days than in our own. And he very early began to find expression for his own ideas in verse. He united with the Church at the age of thirteen, when his father was a pastor in Philadelphia, being the only one who did so at the time, so that the act was the result of personal decision and not of a revival excitement. He graduated at Yale in 1863; and after teaching for a while, he began the study of theology under the care of his grandfather and his father. Not until after he had been licensed to preach, and had had charge of a mission in Chicago, did he present himself as a student in Union Theological Seminary. The Hymn-Book of the Modern Church by Arthur Edwin Gregory Pdf

Excerpt from The Hymn-Book of the Modern Church: Studies of Hymns and Hymn-Writers The present time is in many respects peculiarly appropriate for a consideration of the growth and development of the hymns of the modern Church. We are in a state of rest or pause after tumult. The great religious movements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are matters of history, and we can regard even the most recent of them calmly and without the pre j udica which while conflict rages may, not altogether unfairly, be regarded as patriotism. The Methodist Revival, the Evangelical Awakening, the Oxford Move ment, the Salvation Army Campaign, the Undenomi national Evangelism of Messrs. Moody and Sankey, may all be taken into account in considering the material and character of the hymn-book of the modern Church. Our Hymn Writers by Presbyterian Church In Canada Pdf

Excerpt from Our Hymn Writers: Being Biographical Notices of the Authors of the Hymns Selected by the Hymn Book Committee of the Presbyterian Church in Canada In the Committee's selection there are some hymns from living authors of whom little is known to the world. Sympathising readers will find in the intrinsic value of these hymns, ample compensation for the absence of dates and incidents. With such it is the sowing time, and the sheaves will be brought home by the generation following. Notices of the French, German and Ancient Hymns introduced in the Selection, to be useful would require a fullness exceeding the limits of this little work and anything else would give but a feeble idea of the work done by hymns in the Vaudois valleys, and by the hymns of the cottage homes of Germany. Translations of these, and from the Greek and Latin, suitable for congregational singing, are given in the selection. In this small compilation, the command of liberal sources of informa tion, and those of the best kind, have been enjoyed and utilized. The Romance of Women Hymn Writers (Classic Reprint) by Frederick William Pitt Pdf

Excerpt from The Romance of Women Hymn Writers Besides the enjoyment which The Romance pro vides for all who read it, I must offer a sincere tribute of admiration and appreciation. To me the reading of the ms. Has meant an enrichment of mind, and it has enhanced my estimate of the ministry of those women who, as is so strikingly set forth, have been inspired by the Holy Spirit to wed the deepest spiritual realities to the most delightful flow of rhythm. By his unique presentation of a great subject, the author has proved his right to a place amongst those hymnologists whose contributions have added to the value of the Church's treasures. The Psalmody of the Church by William H. Parker Pdf

Excerpt from The Psalmody of the Church: Its Authors, Singers, and Uses In this case we offer no apology, because our unpretentious little book is of itself a proof that we have no nefarious design against the persecuted public. We will therefore simply explain our position in a few words, and then throw ourselves upon the mercy of our critics. For many years we have been interested in hymnology, and have enjoyed it, both as a profitable study and a delightful pas time. We have read many of the books upon hymns and hymn writers which have recently been published, and have invariably laid them down with a feeling of disappointment. They are too fragmentary to be entertaining. They are useful as books of reference, but no one thinks of reading them. We have long, vainly waited for some one to write a racy, readable book upon this extremely interesting and fascinating theme; and now - no, dear reader, the Daniel is not yet come to judgment, but we believe that when he does come, he will adopt some such plan as we have sketched in this little book. Singers and Songs of the Church by Josiah Miller Pdf

Excerpt from Singers and Songs of the Church: Being the Biographical Sketches of the Hymn-Writers in All the Principal Collections; With Notes on Their Psalms and Hymns Encouraged by the rapid sale of the first edition of my work, 'Our Hymns: their Authors and Origin, ' and the favourable reception given to it, I have adopted the suggestion of some of my friendly critics, and have both emended the former material, and enlarged the plan of the work, so as to make it a Biographical Companion to all the principal Hymnals, and substantially a new work. The labour of including so many authors (more than five hundred), and the thousands of hymns in so many Collections, and the necessary research and correspondence involved, have been very great; but it is hoped that the result will be valued by the general reader, and especially by the large and increasing class who take delight in Hymns and Hymnology. Most people have their favourite hymns, and there are millions who from week to week use their Hymn Books in public worship, until they find that a thousand pleasing associations are clustering around the hymns they sing, and their familiar words are influencing their daily and most sacred feelings, and interweaving themselves in the very fabric of their spiritual nature. It is the object of this work to provide such information of the authors and origin of our hymns as will add to the pleasure and advantage of private devotion and public worship. Hymn and Tune Book for the Church and the Home by American Unitarian Association Pdf

Excerpt from Hymn and Tune Book for the Church and the Home: And Services for Congregational Worship IN the preparation of this book, the selections from the Psalms and Prophets are taken from the Common Version, with a few verbal changes, chiefly from the trans lation by Rev. Dr. Noyes. The rest of the materials are drawn from ancient liturgies and many modern service books, to all of which obligations are acknowledged. Its plan avoids the monotony of a Single prolonged service; and by its threefold division of Introduction, Psalm, and Prayer, it offers freedom in using more or less, at the option of the minister and people.
