Hymns That Have Helped by W. T. Stead Pdf

Excerpt from Hymns That Have Helped: Being a Collection of Hymns Which Have Been Found I claim nothing for the collection beyond what its name implies. The hymns which it contains are hymns which have helped all sorts and conditions of men to do their work in this world and to face with composure or exultation the coming of the Messenger which summons them to the next. In its compilation I have naturally given the foremost place to those hymns which have helped those who have helped their fellows most. Some hymns are like jewelled chalices from which generation after generation has drunk of the water of life. Others are but as the rusty dipper from which the wayworn traveller cools his thirst. The workmanship of the vessel has weighed little compared with the authentic evidence that it was the means whereby the thirsty soul of man was able to drink and live. In appealing to the American public I do not feel as if I were venturing upon ground that was more strange to me than that of my native land. For the English Nonconformist has always been more in fellowship with the churches of America than with the Anglican Church that is established and endowed in his own country. The men of the ''Mayflower,''who founded New England, and their descendants after them, have always been more of our kith and kin than the representatives of the church of Laud and the Stuarts. The children of the Puritans in the Old World and in the New form one family, in a much more real and vital sense than those who are outside the circle are able to realise. And within that circle there is no language of the household so familiar as sacred song. It would be difficult to overestimate the extent to which the religious life of the English-speaking world has been quickened and gladdened by the Songs and Solos of Mr. Sankey. And before Mr. Sankey, the "American Sacred Songster" of Mr. Phillips had done much to enliven our Service of Song. To this day the American hymns and spiritual songs are more popular among our masses than any others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Modern Messages from Great Hymns by Robert Smith Pdf

THIS beautiful volume, one of the most artistic products of this well-known press, and coming to our hand at the time when there is a noteworthy revival of interest in the hymns of the Church and of its entire ritual, should be read and pondered for three things: First, it is a wonderfully helpful volume for devotional reading; it brings and holds the mind of its reader within the sweep of the spiritual forces that build Christlikeness. Secondly, the book gives interestingly the facts, the incidents that should be known about the twelve greatest hymns of the Church. Thirdly, this series of twelve sermon-lectures is a model for the study of anyone who contemplates using the great hymns or any other spiritual songs, in lifting the spiritual life of the people who worship God in our churches. A little light on the origin, history, and moral awakening caused by the singing of the songs would help to make them more powerful still in lifting on wings of melody the thoughts of our people to things divine. Some of the hymns presented are: "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus," "Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break," "God Moves in a Mysterious Way," "Nearer, My God, to Thee," "Majestic Sweetness Sits Enthroned Upon the Saviour's Brow," "Faith of Our Fathers, Living Still," "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty," "Rock of Ages," "Lead, Kindly Light, Amid the Encircling Gloom," "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name." And on every one a discourse of facts, of incidents, of messages of winsomeness and power follows. Spiritual results attended the delivery of these messages, and now the printed pages seem to breathe. A hallowed influence pervades the book and its readers. Here are samples of its paragraphs: In the message based upon "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," the author tells of a sinful, conscience-stricken man who came to him for help, and then adds, "I might have told him to turn over a new leaf, to forget the past, to stop wrongdoing, to try to do right, to love the beautiful, not to believe that there was anything called 'sin' in the world, to be saved 'by character.' There are many in these modern days who would have thus advised him. But following such advice would not make this man free and give him a pure heart and a clear conscience. So I directed him to flee straight to the arms of Jesus, the Saviour." In discussing Fanny Crosby's hymn, "Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break," we find the following: "When the silver cord is broken, when the earthly house fails, when the frail tent collapses, when the perishable tabernacle crumbles into fragments, when the machine wears out, when the harp is hushed into silence, when the boat has crossed life's river, when the door of the prison cell is thrown open, when the organist pushes in the stops and locks the instrument, then the freed spirit, the real self, the immortal soul takes the wings of the morning and flies in triumph to the bosom of the waiting Christ.... -Methodist Review, Volume 99 [1917]

Hymns Psalms & Worship by Irving Risch Pdf

As I thought about writing this book I had no idea where I was going to start. When you are overwhelmed by so much talent and love for the Lord, where do you start? My thoughts are of all the Hymn writers past present and future that love the Lord, and it shows in the writing of their hymns we have available to us today. I have always looked at music and in this case hymns, they are speaking to our souls. (True Soul Music.) Hymns have always been a big part of worship, they get our minds tuned and thoughts focused on the Lord and his great wonders. I find that they sometimes put praise on my lips and thanksgivings in my heart. I hope they do the same for you. Music moves the emotions. Some will make you cry while others will put joy in your heart. I took a ride this morning on my Trike, (my three wheel bike) and just enjoyed the lovely spring morning with all its newness. New leaves on the trees Tulips in full bloom. The air even smelled fresh, and I have the beauty of living alongside the Mississippi River in a small town in Southeast Minnesota. With this beauty, it put a song in my heart and makes me want to praise the Lord for his creation. You see, Worship can be done anywhere at any time, you don’t have to be in buildings with other Christians, but there is also a time for that as well. It is called corporate Worship where not just one voice goes up to the throne of grace, but many join as one. It was this beautiful ride that gave me the inspiration to write this book, and if you have decided to read it, my hope is that you enjoy it as much as I will in writing it. Since becoming a Christian about 38 years ago, I just love reading and writing about the Lord. The joy of every Christian should be getting to know Him in a more intimate way, and that is my hope of doing in this book. Think of it a devotional to help you do exactly that. There might be some instructions along the way as well. A good way to start this writing would be to quote the famous Protestant Reformer, Martin Luther. “ “I would allow no man to preach or teach God’s people without a proper knowledge of the use and power of sacred song.”

Music and Liturgy, Identity and Formation by Sue Whittaker Pdf

Music and Liturgy, Identity and Formation is a one-of-a-kind book about All Saints Moda Church in Istanbul. In this book, Sue Whittaker explores the ways Dr. Turgay Ücal, the MBB founding pastor, has intuitively blended Christian faith and the local urban culture. Indigenous songs and adaptations of Reformed liturgy work together to enable worshipers to feel comfortable with Christianity. Images, customs, and gestures guide seekers into new ways to pray and live their lives. Turgay’s theologically sound approach provides a welcoming Christian home for Muslims searching to connect to Allah/God. For thirty years, the practices and strategies detailed in this book have merged to clearly present the gospel message in culturally appropriate ways. The principles of the All Saints Moda Church model of inculturation can be applied to Christian ministry among Muslims in all countries and cultures worldwide.
