For the Health of It! by Ali Javanbakht Pdf

It was a sunny California afternoon when Ali Javanbakht, MD first walked two doors down from his office to the Coastal View News to hand in an article on that years flu vaccine. The editor was kind enough to publish it and For the Health of It! was born - a humor/health column that took medicine off the shelf, dusted it off, put it in comfy clothes, and brought it out to play. From that point forward, Dr. Javanbakhts articles grew in frequency and popularity. The editor of the Coastal View News noted that it generated more reader feedback than any other column the newspaper had published. Readers started clipping columns and sending them across the country to friends and family. High school students began citing them in health classes. They were posted in various retirement homes across the country. And soon, it had a strong following that has continued to grow over time. His column won second place for best original writing at the 2010 Association of Free Community Newspapers awards. This book is a collection of some of his best work over the years. They have delighted and informed readers of all ages. Described as the Dave Barry of medicine, Dr. Javanbakhts column uses analogies, everyday metaphors, and made-up organizations to humanize medicine, covering a broad range of topics from illnesses, to medical politics, to anatomy and physiology. It also includes the previously unpublished article, The Decade in Review, and a foreword by Hippocrates. While his intention has always been to entertain, readers cant help but come away from reading his work better informed and with smiles on their faces.

Pediatric Traumatic Emergencies by Ann Dietrich Pdf

Each chapter provides a discussion of the diagnosis, key points to remember, and selected references for further reading. Areas of controversy are clearly delineated with a discussion regarding evidence-based options and a balanced view of treatment and disposition decisions. The book addresses a wide range of topics including hemorrhage, chest trauma, abdominal marks, clavicle fractures, and more. Pediatric Traumatic Emergencies is an engaging collection of thought-provoking cases which clinicians can utilize when they encounter difficult pediatric patients. The volume is also a self-assessment tool that tests the reader's ability to answer the question, "What do I do now?" Advance Praise for Pediatric Traumatic Emergencies "The book contains an excellent review of the most common pediatric traumatic emergency cases and provides practitioners to a succinct and effective reference on hand that will help with the tricky nuances of pediatric traumas that are often glossed over. As an ATLS instructor I found the descriptions of the traumatic presentations and follow-up questions to ask concerning patients with head injuries an extremely accurate section. As pediatric trauma is the number one cause of mortality in the age range, having this information available for reference to those less familiar may be vital to saving lives." -- Ian Hoffman, MD FAAP, Attending Physician, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College - New York Presbyterian, New York, NY

Number Categories by Deborah Arbes Pdf

The book examines the category Number from a variety of linguistic perspectives. Typological aspects of co-plurals and singulatives are introduced and number marking is analysed for three individual languages: Kamas (Samoyedic), Welsh (Celtic) and Wagi (Beria, Saharan). For each language, the focus lies on a different aspect of number marking: In the Wagi dialect of Beria, different tonal patterns are discovered. The extinct Kamas language is analysed in terms of language contact with Russian. Number categories can also serve as a measure of loanword integration, as the study about spoken Welsh shows. The combination of articles in this volume illustrates the potential of number marking and offers insights that contribute our understanding of how grammatical number is applied and categorised in languages.
