The Secret Life of Twickenham by Chris Jones Pdf

Twickenham Stadium is rightly venerated as the home of the Rugby Football Union (RFU). While it may bask in this fame, the stadium’s beginnings were very humble. The land it was built upon was purchased in 1907 and would subsequently become the home to the Harlequins who would play the first ever match against Richmond. The first England test match didn’t take place until 1910 and a home win ensured things got off on the right footing but cows, sheep and horses would be grazing on the pitch just four years later as the stadium became a farm during the First World War. The first Varsity match was played in December 1921, by which time the popularity of Twickenham had soared. Extra accommodation was created in the North Stand, built in 1925 by the legendary football stadium architect, Archibald Leitch. By 1931, the famous ‘Twickenham Look’ had come about. When the Second World War arrived, the ground became a Civil Defence depot, and the closest it got to being hit by enemy action was in July 1944 when a V1 flying bomb fell in the front garden of a house opposite the West Gate, injuring sixteen people. The car park was dug up and – appropriately given its original use – turned into allotments to generate much needed fresh food for the locals. The stadium today is at the heart of a multi-million pound business that the RFU controls, but how does it generate so much money from this one plot of land? With such a colourful and celebrated history The Secret Life of Twickenham will dig deeper into it’s history to reveal the many men and women, cutting across all social backgrounds, jobs, and positions within the RFU who have helped to build this iconic stadium into a globally recognised brand. It will reveal to all fans of rugby union the true history of the most iconic sports stadium in the British Isles with a compendium of facts, dates, figures and revealing anecdotes of England’s sporting fortress.

Tackling Rugby by Allyson Pollock Pdf

On 29 January 2011, Benjamin Robinson was playing rugby for his school. During the match he sustained a concussion but was not taken off, and was allowed to continue with the game, in which he endured a second impact. When play ended, he collapsed, dying two days later as a result of his injuries. Every week young children are hospitalized on the playing fields of Britain. Yet the subject is rarely investigated, injury data are not systematically collected, and as a result any real attempt to work out how to make youth rugby safer is flawed. Using meticulous, peer-reviewed research, leading public health specialist Allyson M. Pollock sets out the true risks associated with the sport, raising uncomfortable questions for politicians and the educational authorities.

Hot Chocolate in June: A True Story of Loss, Love and Restoration by Holly Mthethwa Pdf

Under-qualified and overly-ambitious, Holly left her family and friends behind in Nebraska to search for that radical life, that all-for-Jesus-or-nothing-at-all life. Escaping the depression that chased her following her father’s untimely and agonizing death, this young accountant-turned-adventurer trekked to remote mountain villages and through city streets smelling of human excrement: all in search of a Father’s love. Thousands of miles from the only home she’d ever known, Holly discovered a deeper passion for her God while sharing the gospel in India and soothing abandoned babies in South Africa. God made sure that Holly also encountered Oscar. This handsome South African rugby player seemed to have everything Holly had been praying for in a husband—except for the small detail that he didn’t look like any of the other guys she’d dated before. Oscar, as the son of parents who had lived through racial segregation and apartheid, was not supposed to bring home a woman whose skin matched the color of the people his parents had served. And this small town, Midwestern girl wasn’t supposed to fall in love with a black man, either. Hot Chocolate in June is the true story of God's undeniable ability to mend emotional wounds, overcome racial and cultural differences, and write amazing adventure stories. Join Holly as she navigates her way through deep grief and loss, only to discover the sweetness of love and restoration.

Winners by Philip Croucher Pdf

Maritimers take great pride in watching other Maritimers do well on the national and global stage. This book tells the inspiring stories of 12 athletes drawn from a variety of backgrounds and sports. Men and women, black and white, Acadian and Mi'kmaq, able-bodied and non able-bodied. The common thread: young people who grow up in the Maritimes, with backgrounds that every reader will recognize, can and do chalk up impressive achievements. And they stay true to their roots in doing so. As CBC broadcaster Bruce Rainnie writes in the book's preface, "In every character-defining way, [the featured athletes are exactly the same today as before any money or acclaim entered their lives. No wonder we punch so far above our weight. No wonder so many of our stories are 'unlikely but possible.' And no wonder we relish in hearing these stories told, as Philip Croucher does so tastefully in this book. Quiet confidence, humility, and a rock-solid base. What a mix. What an unbeatable mix. What a Maritime mix."

As Far as You Can Go by Julian Mitchell Pdf

As Far As You Can Go was Julian Mitchell's third novel, first published in 1963. Its protagonist is Harold Barlow, a young stockbroker, on his way up in the world - but easily bored, desiring adventure. He accepts a commission to travel to America; and the further west he goes, the more he discovers in the way of wide open spaces and freedoms. There is, however, a limit. In an introduction written especially for this edition, Julian Mitchell describes his interest in writing 'a reverse Henry James novel, about a European discovering America rather than vice-versa.' 'Like Nabokov, but without his cynicism, Mr Mitchell sets the geography of the United States in motion.' Anthony Burgess, Observer 'This raid on the American psyche, so hilarious, yet so horrific in its implications, proves Mr Mitchell a first-rate satirist.' Telegraph

Blessed by John Doyle Pdf

Who is Rampaging Roy Slaven? An Australian icon, a raconteur, an athlete of unsurpassable - and some may say improbable - sporting feats. Whether it was riding Rooting King to another Melbourne Cup victory, commentating the Olympics or hobnobbing with the country's upper crust, Rampaging Roy Slaven has lived an extraordinary life. But even some of the greatest men come from humble beginnings. Before he shot to fame as Australia's most talented sportsman, he was just another kid in Lithgow, trying to avoid Brother Connell's strap and garner the attention of Susan Morgan from the local Catholic girls school. Blessed follows one year in the life of the boy who would become Rampaging Roy Slaven, a boy who, even at the age of fifteen, knew he was destined for greatness but had to get through high school first.
