Handbook on the Morphology of Common Grasses by Dhara Gandhi,Susy Albert,Neeta Pandya Pdf

The grass family is one of the largest and most diverse families in the plant kingdom and is of great economic value. Grasses provide human beings and domestic animals with the main necessities of life, add diversity to the landscape and stability to the ground surface, and also provide ornamental and amenity value. The present handbook is a pictorial resource guide to the identification of different common grasses in their early growth stage. In this book, 100 of the most common grasses (palatable and unpalatable) growing in the grasslands have been characterized on the basis of the vegetative characters of the seedling. A key to the identification of the grasses at their seedling stages is provided to help easily identify the grasses at their early stage of development. Many of the grasses described in the book are cosmopolitan, and many grow worldwide. Terms used to describe a grass seedling are used with help of photographs. Different diagnostic features of the seedling—such as growth habits, types of vernation, nodes, internodes, leaf laminas, leaf tips, leaf sheaths, ligules, auricles, and collars—have been used for their identification. The descriptions and photographs enable users to successfully and easily identify these species in a field environment. The book has been divided into two main sections. The first section covers the characteristic features of the caryopses. It includes light and scanning electron microscopic features and a diagnostic key to the identification of the species. The second section deals with grass seedling morphology and provides a key to the identification of the species on the basis of early vegetative features. Each of the sections includes an introduction, materials and methods, and results, supplemented with microphotographs representing the features of identification. This handbook is the first of its kind to include so many grass species that can be authentically identified with the help of pictorial diagnostic features of the seedlings and caryopses. The identifying features are solely on the basis of morphological, micromorphological, and morphometric characters. This handbook will be an important reference book of value to students in basic grass taxonomy or ecology classes as well as to academicians, researchers, pasture management practitioners, as well as professionals working in grassland restoration.

Weeds of Hawaiʻi's Pastures and Natural Areas by Philip Susumu Motooka,Luisa Castro,Duane Nelson,Guy Nagai,Lincoln Ching Pdf

Invasive, alien plants are "uninvited guests" in most of Hawai'i's ecosystems. Native forests are invaded, and their precious native plant species are choked out. Extensive areas of pasture land have been colonized by plants that cannot be grazed. Weeds can be a fire hazard, and they can be painful impediments to access to natural areas. This book describes over 150 plants that are considered weeds under certain--if not, in some cases, most--circumstances. The plant types represented include trees, shrubs, vines and sprawlers, herbs, and grasses and their relatives. Most of the weeds covered are illustrated in color, both on the page where the weed is treated and on spreads of "thumbnail" images, grouped by growth habit category for convenience in quick identification. The text accompanying the photograph of each weed provides a detailed description, outlines its distribution and environmental impact in Hawai'i, and relates what is known about methods for managing it. Reprinted May 2021 with new cover.

Horse Pasture Management by Paul H. Sharpe Pdf

Horse Pasture Management begins with coverage of the structure, function and nutritional value of plants, continuing into identification of pasture plants. Management of soil and plants in a pasture is covered next, followed by horse grazing behavior, feed choices of horses, management of grazing horses, and how to calculate how many horses should be grazing relative to land size. Management of hay and silage are included, since year-round grazing is not possible on many horse farms. A number of chapters deal with interactions of a horse farm with the environment and other living things. As an aid in good pasture management, one chapter explains construction and use of fencing and watering systems. Contributions are rounded out with a chapter explaining how the University of Kentucky helps horse farm managers develop their pasture management programs. The purpose of the book is to help people provide a better life for horses Provides the basic principles of pasture management for those involved in equine-related fields and study Covers a variety of strategies for managing the behavior, grouping, environmental, and feeding needs of grazing horses to ensure high levels of welfare and health Includes information on environmental best practices, plant and soil assessment, and wildlife concerns Explains pasture-related diseases and toxic plants to be avoided Includes links to useful resources and existing extension programs

Identification Guide to Southern African Grasses by Lyn Fish,A. C. Mashau,M. J. Moeaha,M. T. Nembudani Pdf

"Grasses are very important features of the landscape and occur to a greater or lesser extent in all of the vegetation types of southern African. The importance of good grazing grasses for both wild and domesticated animals is well known. Some species are indicators of good or bad veld management and are useful to farmers and conservators. Crop farmers have to deal with undesirable grasses in their fields and the custodians of our indigenous vegetation need to correctly identify any alien invaders. This identification guide relies primarily on the use of keys and descriptive information to aid the user in identifying a grass species. It contains some of the best information needed to identify southern African grasses. Keys to grass genera and species are provided, and in some instances also keys to easily confused taxa. For each species, a combination of useful characters is provided, and where applicable, line drawings of the spikelet or parts thereof accompany the identification keys. Species descriptions and distribution maps are hugely important and add to the identification of grasses."--Back cover.

Field Guide to Grasses of the Mid-Atlantic by Sarah Chamberlain Pdf

Grasses are among the most ubiquitous plants on the planet. They inhabit a wide geographic range and are found in a variety of natural habitats. The small parts of the grass flower and specialized terminology, however, can make identifying grasses a challenging endeavor. Sarah Chamberlain’s Field Guide to Grasses of the Mid-Atlantic makes identification simpler for everyone—regardless of their previous botanical knowledge. Featuring an easy-to-use dichotomous key, this is a user-friendly guide to more than 300 types of grasses found from the Blue Ridge Mountains and southern plains to the Appalachians and the Allegheny Plateau. Each major entry contains detailed species diagrams as well as common names, habitats, and distribution. The book’s opening sections outline the parts of grass flowers and describe stem, leaf, and sheath characteristics. With a wealth of illustrations, instructions on how to use the key, and a glossary of terms, Field Guide to Grasses of the Mid-Atlantic is an indispensable reference for naturalists and conservationists, botanists, land management professionals, and students and scholars of mid-Atlantic flora.
