Accordingly, about four years after the removal of the colonists to the peninsula, and being ili at ease among them, he agreed to sell to them the whole of the peninsula, except six acres where his house stood on Beacon Hill, for 30 and the monev was raised by a rate, each householder paying six shillings (about Compared with the price paid for Manhattan Island, the site of the commercial metropolis of the country, that paid for the peninsula on which New England's leading city stands was six times greater; but the former was bought from the Indians and the latter from an Englishman, and a parson at that. With the money received from the sale, Blackstone bought cows and other things, and travelled farther into the wilderness, establishing a new home, which he called Study Hill, not far from Provi dence, R. Illustrated Boston by American Publishing and Engraving Co Pdf

Excerpt from Illustrated Boston: The Metropolis of New England; Containing Also Reviews of Its Principal Environs To every American citizen, some knowledge of the history of his country, and of its leading cities, is indis pensable; and in the compiling of this work, telling of the origin of the second city founded on American soil, of its subsequent growth and present status, the publishers believe that they have not been uselessly employed, and that the reader will rise from the perusal of its pages with an increased knowledge of Boston and its pro gressive people. This book is intended for the average American; for the manufacturer and merchant, who have neither time nor disposition to plod through ten or twenty volumes of elaborate historical dissertations; for the practical man of the shop, the counter, and the plough. The story of the coming of the first settlers to the pear-shaped peninsula on which they began the building up of the present giant city of Boston is briefly but interestingly told the great work of converting that which was but a narrow neck connecting the city to the mainland, into what is now the broadest part of the municipality, isadequately described; the valiant deeds of the forefathers, who sounded the tocsin and fired the first guns of the Revolution; have been concisely but faithfully related, and old landmarks pointed out. But the ambition of the authors has been to give a pen-pie tore, with beautiful new illustrations, of the city as it is in this year of grace 1889; to tell of the character of its multifarious manufactures, and of its miscellaneous commerce; and to make the reader acquainted with its representative business men, who have won fame for themselves and made the name of Boston known and honored in all the corners of the earth. Invented Cities by Mona Domosh Pdf

Why do cities look the way they do? In this intriguing new book, Mona Domosh seeks to answer this question by comparing the strikingly different landscapes of two great American cities, Boston and New York. Although these two cities appeared to be quite similar through the eighteenth century, distinctive characteristics emerged as social and economic differences developed. Domosh explores the physical differences between Boston and New York, comparing building patterns and architectural styles to show how a society's vision creates its own distinctive urban form. Cities, Domosh contends, are visible representations of individual and group beliefs, values, tensions, and fears. Using an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses economics, politics, architecture, historical and cultural geography, and urban studies, Domosh shows how the middle and upper classes of Boston and New York, the "building elite," inscribed their visions of social order and social life on four landscape features during the latter half of the nineteenth century: New York's retail district and its commercial skyscrapers, and Boston's Back Bay and its Common and park system. New York's self-expression translated into unlimited commercial and residential expansion, conspicuous consumption, and architecture designed to display wealth and prestige openly. Boston, in contrast, focused more on culture. The urban gentry limited skyscraper construction, prevented commercial development of Boston Common, and maintained homes and parks near the business district. Many fascinating lithographs illustrate the two cities' contrasting visions.

The interior space was as nearly as possible equi-distant from the sides of the structure; and the apartments, which surrounded it upon the various stories, amounted to about 210. 'The house was divided into two species of rooms; those which belonged to the hotel, and those which were rented for offices and shops to individuals. The basement story consisted chiefly of an extensive kitchen, private lodging rooms, larder, and the cellars, with some offices that were entered from the street. The principal floor was originally intended for a public Exchange, which design never was executed, as the merchants from long habit, prefer to stand in the street, even during the inclement winter months. A publick reading room, with a very large list of subscribers, was also upon thi floor, where the lodgers in the hotel had the privilege ot resorting, and in which was regularly kept a journal of the most interesting occurrences of the times, whether of a political or commercial nature. A convenient Coffee room, a Bar and withdrawing-room for boarders, were also on this floor; besides various apartments occupied by publick incorporations and private individuals. On the second floor chiefly devoted to the hotel, upon the southern side, there was a dining room sufficiently spacious to admit tables for three hundred persons; about fourteen other apartments comprised the whole of the second story. 'The third and fourth floors belonged to the tavern. An arched ball-room, finished with great taste in the Corinthian order of architecture, extended through both stories, and was placed immediately over the large dining hall. The other apartments on these floors were either connected with the ball room, or...

The Book of Boston by Edwin M. Bacon Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of Boston: Fifty Years' Recollections of the New England Metropolis The intent of this book is to tell the story of Fifty Years Of Boston, the story of the progress and development of the city in the last past half century and of the institutions and men identified with it, through a series of reminiscences rather than in the formal manner of the direct historical narrative. History and biography indeed are woven into the relation, but with lighter thread, though none the less accurate, than in the conventional web. The reminiscent method was adopted because as a resident of Boston for the most part of this eventful half century, as an active journalist from the early eighteen sixties, and a managing or a chief editor of Boston daily newspapers for considerable periods, the editor has seen Boston grow from the interesting but little historic city of fifty years back into the splendid metropolis of light and leading of today; and through his newspaper connections has come in touch directly or indirectly with leaders of the epoch reviewed, merchants, financiers, professional men, politicians, officials of city and state, the master minds of the community that "make the wheels go round." During this time he has seen the rise of many individuals and firms who have left their impress on trade, and commerce and industry; has seen great changes wrought in the physical and spiritual city; the development of great institutions, educational, learned, devoted to the arts and sciences, that have made Boston a treasure house for American scholars and students; and the initiation of public utilities of subsequent country-wide adoption. Although the story of the evolution of all the greater American cities is wonderful and worth the telling, yet certain developments in Boston within the period covered by this work are of particular moment, especially since it was the parent city of the telephone and of the electric subway; and since it was also the first American seaboard city to take advance steps in regard to the systematic development as a port. While this story might well have been told by any trained newspaper man, the editor feels himself particularly fortunate as the narrator in that it has been his personal privilege to come in direct contact with various leading citizens who have had the commanding influence in certain formative periods of the city's comparatively recent growth. Fundamentalists in the City by Margaret Lamberts Bendroth Pdf

Fundamentalists in the City is a story of religious controversy and division, set within turn of the century and early twentieth-century Boston. It offers a new perspective on the rise of fundamentalism, emphasizing the role of local events, both sacred and secular, in deepening the divide between liberal and conservative Protestants. The first part of the narrative, beginning with the arrest of three clergymen for preaching on the Boston Common in 1885, shows the importance of anti-Catholicism as a catalyst for change. The second part of the book deals with separation, told through the events of three city-wide revivals, each demonstrating a stage of conservative Protestant detachment from their urban origins.
