Cuba by Clyde Butcher Pdf

The United Nations declared the year 2002 as "The Year of the Mountains" and encouraged countries all over the world to have environmental conferences regarding the conservation of mountains. The Conference for the Caribbean and the Americas was held in Cuba, and Clyde Butcher was invited to photograph the mountains of Cuba for the conference. He spent three weeks photographing from the Sierra Maestra of the east coast to the mogote region of the west coast--rain forests, waterfalls, and cliffs that drop off into a perfect ocean. The beauty and majesty of Cuba's natural landscape are captured in his intimate compositions, their focus on shape and light, the horizon and the sky.

Cuba by Jorge Guillermo Pdf

"Few countries in the Western Hemisphere have had a history as long and interesting as Cuba. First sighted by Christopher Columbus on October 27th, 1492, during his first voyage to the New World, the island was described by him as the fairest land human eyes had ever seen." "Throughout the ensuing five hundred years, countless visitors and settlers have been captivated by Cuba's beauty. Spain began to colonize it in 1511 and by the eighteenth century the island had become one of the most important components of the vast Spanish empire. It attracted large numbers of European merchants and adventurers, and its prosperity soon made it the target of pirate attacks." "Cuba's wealth made possible the construction of many large and ambitious buildings, which, by ingeniously adapting European architectural principles to fit the needs of the New World, constitute the foundation of a new and truly American building style. The design of Cuban cities was similarly innovative and offers one of the earliest examples of methodical urban planning." "This glorious artistic legacy serves as a rich visual background to Cuba: Five Hundred Years of Images. Using historical documents as well as recent photographs, this book weaves together the fascinating strands that make up Cuba's history with equally fascinating views of her splendid past."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Cuba by Korda by Alberto Korda Pdf

Cuba's greatest photographer captures the spirit of the Cuban Revolution—and of Cuba itself—in unforgettable images and text. Korda’s photographs and breathtaking reminiscences capture some of the 20th-century’s greatest moments with unprecedented intimacy as no other book ever could or will. In the first weeks of 1959, Korda joined the staff of the newly created daily newspaper of Cuba, Revolución. From that moment on, Korda documented the heady early days of revolutionary Cuba. When Fidel Castro visited the United States in April 1959, Korda went with him. When Castro visited the Soviet Union in 1963 and 1964, Korda was there, documenting intimate moments with Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev’s family and appearing to show the end of the breach that had followed their country’s divergent policies during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. But probably Korda’s greatest moment came on March 5, 1960, during a funeral ceremony for the victims of the sabotaged French freighter La Coubre, a ship carrying arms purchased by the Cuban military. Fidel knew the attack to be the work of America’s CIA. And it altered relations between the two countries forever after. Korda was less than a dozen steps from the platform where Fidel Castro was addressing the crowd of mourners. There were foreign observers present, including Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Che stepped forward to look over the crowd. Korda shot him through his telephoto lens, even though he was near to him. The result would turn into nothing less than one of the most enduring images of our age, though the picture would not see light of day for another year. It was first published on April 15, 1961, just before the Bay of Pigs invasion, and would only become well known when Che’s Italian publisher Gianfranco Feltrinelli printed thousands of posters of the image shortly after Che’s death.

Images of Cuba by Gabriel García Márquez Pdf

"This book presents three essays on Cuba by Nobel prize winning author Gabriel Garcia Márquez. Here he describes the early days of the Cuban revolution and the impact of the US blockade of the island, first declared in February 1962, that remains in place with devastating effect to this day. The second essay relates the extraordinary and largely unknown episode of Cuba's role in Africa, when in 1975 the Cuban government sent troops to aid newly independent Angola resist an invasion by South Africa, an outstanding example of international solidarity that not only assisted Namibia gain its independence but ultimately helped to bring down the apartheid government in Pretoria. In the third essay, Garcia Marquez offers an intimate reflection on his longtime friend, Fidel Castro, describing him as "a man of austere ways and insatiable illusions, with an old-fashioned formal education, of cautious words and simple manners and incapable of conceiving any idea that is not out of the ordinary."--Page 4 of cover.

Portraits of Cuba by Daniel Duncan,Marcela Vásquez-León,Dereka Rushbrook Pdf

Scenes from Havana to Santiago Through an abundance of dynamic photographs, Portraits of Cuba depicts the experiences of Cubans of different ages and walks of life who are navigating the challenges and changes transforming the island today. From the vintage colonial architecture and potholed streets of Havana to the farms and winding highways of the countryside, images by documentary photographer Daniel Duncan capture daily life across the nation. Expert commentary by Marcela Vásquez-León and Dereka Rushbrook describes the history of el bloqueo, the economic embargo imposed by the U.S. government in 1960. The book also features selections from interviews with Cubans who highlight how the island residents continue to invent, adapt, and persevere in the face of this and other complicated circumstances. Duncan's photographs represent many aspects of the arts, religion, politics, public messaging, agriculture, and the economy in contemporary Cuba. Despite issues such as limited natural resources, dependence on imports, climate change and rising sea levels, and the departure of many of its young people, the island has emerged as an innovative player in addressing today's global problems. The authors note how the advances made by Cuba's sustainable farmers, scientists, medical teams, and literacy campaigns are models throughout the developing world. Portraits of Cuba celebrates the ingenuity, solidarity, and deep-rooted resilience of the Cuban people, illustrating how they are creating their own form of democracy in the long shadow of the 1959 Cuban Revolution and the 60-year blockade.

Havana Blues by Pamela Ruiz Pdf

Crumbling pastel-colored facades line its streets, parked vintage cars evoke times past, live music permeates the air. Welcome to Havana, home to an overwhelming energy. Situated along the Straits of Florida, the capital of Cuba has been through several identities: Spanish colonial settlement, mobster rule in the 1930s, glamour of the 1950s, Cuban revolution and, most recently, a cultural renaissance. Havana’s bold, provocative approach to art, cuisine and entertainment—as well as the eclectic blend of African, French, Spanish and North American influences—including its range of architecture styles from the sixteenth century to the modern day, confer this epic city with a legendary status on par with the world’s greatest cities. While some of the building are in disrepair, the beauty of the baroque, neoclassical and art deco features triumphs. The iconic Copa Room cabaret that hosted Ginger Rogers and Abbott and Costello still stands. The Gran Teatro de la Habana, built in the early twentieth century, is now home to the Cuban National Ballet. Habana Vieja is undergoing a massive restoration to its former glory. Havana could be seen as a work-in-progress, but it is more a testament to its never-ending determination to improve and progress, which might be the allure that attracts so many visitors. So take a seat at an authentic paladar (family-run restaurant) and enjoy the vibrant evolution of Havana.

Cuba Then by Ramiro Fernandez Pdf

Vintage photos from one of the largest archives of Cuban photography in the world capture the island’s history. The enduring fascination of Cuba intensifies as the island once again becomes a seductive travel destination. From Ramiro Fernández, whose collection of Cuban photography and ephemera is one of the largest outside of the island nation, comes a dazzling array of images of Cuban life, lifestyle, glamour, customs, and struggle from the nineteenth century to the Revolution. From the earliest daguerreotypes to glamorous shots of movie stars, the country’s history is represented by a rich spectrum of personalities: race-car driving aristocrats, sultry showgirls, gangsters, everyday folk, and revolutionaries who would soon transform the nation. Rare images are showcased: a portrait of Castro as a schoolboy, a bare-chested Che Guevara, and Heinz Lüning, the only Nazi spy executed in Latin America during World War II (and the unwitting inspiration for Graham Greene’s Our Man in Havana). With nearly 300 exceptional images and a foreword and poetry by Richard Blanco, the poet selected for President Obama's second inauguration, this is a multifaceted look at Cuba, then.
