Imaging the Universe in Three Dimensions by Willem Johannes Maria van Breugel,Joss Bland-Hawthorn Pdf

The nonprofit Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) publishes the Conference Series Proceedings as part of its century-old mission to provide resources for astronomers and advance the science of astronomy. Since 1988, the ASP has published the proceedings of astronomical workshops, meetings, colloquia, and symposia to meet the community's demand for affordable, high-quality volumes on current topics in the rapidly expanding fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Since 1998, the Society has also served as publisher for the International Astronomical Union (IAU), adding their Symposia, Highlights, and Transactions to our growing list of publications. For most rapid delivery of each volume, we encourage libraries and astronomy departments to place a Standing Order for the ASP Conference Series and/or the IAU Publications. Standing Orders are shipped directly from the printer and customers receive volumes at the same discounted rates as ASP members (approximately 25-35 ASP volumes each year and/or 5 IAU Symposia). Please refer to the order form to take advantage of this time-saving offer. We encourage all professionals who are sponsoring conferences, workshops, or colloquia to inquire about publishing these proceedings with the ASP. We provide quality volumes at less than half the price of comparable titles from other major publishers, ensuring that the publication will be available to a wider audience of budget-conscious scientists. From a meeting held at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Walnut Creek, CA, 29 March-1 April 1999.

Optical 3D-Spectroscopy for Astronomy by Roland Bacon,Guy Monnet Pdf

Over the last 50 years, a variety of techniques have been developed to add a third dimension to regular imaging, with an extended spectrum associated to every imaging pixel. Dubbed 3D spectroscopy from its data format, it is now widely used in the astrophysical domain, but also inter alia for atmospheric sciences and remote sensing purposes. This is the first book to comprehensively tackle these new capabilities. It starts with the fundamentals of spectroscopic instruments, in particular their potentials and limits. It then reviews the various known 3D techniques, with particular emphasis on pinpointing their different `ecological? niches. Putative users are finally led through the whole observing process, from observation planning to the extensive ? and crucial - phase of data reduction. This book overall goal is to give the non-specialist enough hands-on knowledge to learn fast how to properly use and produce meaningful data when using such a 3D capability.

High Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy in Astronomy by Hans Ulrich Käufl,R. Siebenmorgen,Alan F.M. Moorwood Pdf

Two specialized new instruments for ESO's VLT, VISIR and CRIRES, spawned the idea for this workshop. CRIRES is a dedicated very high resolution infrared spectrograph; VISIR features a high resolution spectroscopic mode. Together, the instruments combine the sensitivity of an 8m-telescope with the now well-established reliability of VLT-facility instruments. High resolution here means that lines in cool stellar atmospheres and HII-regions can be resolved. The astrophysical topics discussed in this rather specialized workshop range from the inner solar system to active galactic nuclei. There are many possibilities for new discoveries with these instruments, but the unique capability, which becomes available through high-resolution infrared spectroscopy, is the observation of molecular rotational-vibrational transitions in many astrophysical environments. Particularly interesting and surprising in this context, many papers on modeling and laboratory spectroscopy at the workshop appear to indicate that astronomical observations are lagging a bit behind in this field. The papers are an interesting mix of reports from existing high resolution facilities, reports on modeling efforts of synthetic spectra and reports on laboratory spectra. In this sense, a fruitful exchange between molecular physics and astronomy was again accomplished and is documented in this volume.

Scientific Drivers for ESO Future VLT/VLTI Instrumentation by J. Bergeron,G. Monnet Pdf

This is the start of a long process to ultimately operate new advanced capabilities at Paranal that can keep up with the evergrowing need for larger and more complex astrophysical data sets. A modern instrument represents a very significant investment in cash, human resources and time. Such a meeting gives us a precious yardstick to evaluate the competitiveness of 1st-generation instruments and associated current and forthcoming proposals for 1st-generation upgrades. This is also crucial to orient the large research and development effort that will provide the very foundation on which 2nd-generation VLT instrumentation can be built. Finally, it represents a significant step towards defining the hopes and goals for the future Extremely Large Telescope to come. The first outcome of this meeting, already in progress, is outlined in the epilogue.

Growing Black Holes: Accretion in a Cosmological Context by Andrea Merloni,Sergei V. Nayakshin,Rashid A. Sunyaev Pdf

Supermassive black holes are now believed to play an important role in the evolution of the Universe. Every respectable galaxy hosts in its center a black hole that appears to regulate the growth of the galaxy itself. In this book, leading experts in the field review the most recent theoretical and observational results on the following topics: - formation and growth of the first black holes in the Universe and their role in the formation and evolution of galaxies - the physics of black-hole accretion and the production of relativistic jets - binary black-hole mergers and gravitational radiation. Theoretical work is supplemented by the most recent exciting results from space and ground based observatories. This volume is useful research and reference tool for the entire astrophysical community.

Stars in Your Hand by Kimberly Arcand,Megan Watzke Pdf

An illustrated guide to exploring the Universe in three dimensions. Astronomers have made remarkable discoveries about our Universe, despite their reliance on the flat projection, or 2D view, the sky has offered them. But now, drawing on the vast stores of data available from telescopes and observatories on the ground and in space, astronomers are using 3D technology to go beyond a flattened view of the cosmos. In Stars in Your Hand, Kimberly Arcand and Megan Watzke offer an illustrated guide to exploring the Universe in three dimensions, with easy-to-follow instructions for creating models of stars and constellations using a 3D printer and 3D computer imaging. Stars in Your Hand and 3D technology make learning about space an adventure. Intrigued by the stunning images from high-powered telescopes? Using this book, you can fly virtually through a 3D spacescape and hold models of cosmic objects in your hand. Arcand and Watzke outline advances in 3D technology, describe some amazing recent discoveries in astronomy, reacquaint us with the night sky, and provide brief biographies of the telescopes, probes, and rovers that are bringing us so much data. They then offer images and instructions for printing and visualizing stars, nebulae, supernovae, galaxies, and even black holes in 3D. Computer Assisted Radiology / Computergestützte Radiologie by AMK Berlin Pdf

New imaging technology and more sophisticated image processing systems will have a profound effect on those areas of medicine which are concerned with imaging for diagnosis and therapy planning. Digitally formated data will form the basis of an increasing number of medical imaging modalities. Before the diagnostic imaging department of the future will largely be digital, many problems have still to be solved as regards image quality, costs, and ease of use. The computer and other information science derived methods will contribute towards solving many of the problems in these areas. It is widely expected that there will be an information science derived evolution in imaging for radiology and related departments. Computer assistance may be applied to image generation, e.g. CT, MRI, DR and DSR, storing and transferring of images, and viewing, analysing and interpreting of images. The application of computers to these activities (which characterise radiological departments), may be defined as Computer Assisted Radiology (CAR) . In the main, CAR will promote the transition from analog imaging systems to digital systems, integration of digital imaging modalities through Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS') and the graduated employment of Medica~ Work Stations (MWS) for diagnosis and therapy planning. It will transfer geographically, organisationally and/or mentally isolate imaging activities towards fully integrated multi-imaging modality diagnostic departments. This development will have a considerable impact on patient management, on the medical profession and on the health care system.
