Divine-Human Encounter by Harold Kasimow Pdf

In his seminal work God in Search of Man, Heschel illustrates three paths to God and provides a practical guide for how the modern mind can open itself to God, or more precisely, through which the contemporary mind can respond to a God who is in search of human beings. In this book, Harold Kasimow clarifies the meaning of Heschel’s “path to God” by devoting one chapter to each of the three aspects of this path. Using this “path to God” in its three aspects as an organizing principle, this book illustrates how Heschel’s thought presents a balance between the rational and mystical poles of the Jewish tradition. A careful content analysis of his thinking reveals that Heschel is an authentic Jewish voice who presents an accurate Jewish theology. The first chapter is devoted to the Hasidic influence on Heschel, which Kasimow feels is most important for understanding Heschel’s thought. The final chapter focuses on Heschel’s unique attitude toward Asian religious traditions, which are becoming critical for authentic religious dialogue today.

The Foundations of Living Faiths by Haridas Bhattacharyya Pdf

This book was originally delivered as the Stephanos Nirmalendu Ghosh lectures in 1933-34 and later published by the University of Calcutta. This work by Prof. Haridas Bhattacharyya may be considered a landmark in the study of Comparative Religion. The author has created a brilliantly authoritative and comprehensive work on five major religions, viz., Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Zoroastrianism. The scholar has also attempted a calm and critical examination of five principal living faiths, including the faith he personally professes. His criticisms have proceeded from a genuine conviction that all living religions possess value-based tenets of which their adherents may be legitimately proud of. However, none of them is perfect and thus beyond criticism. All sincere faiths are capable of development in diverse degrees and directions. The author guides the reader through the fascinating account of God with confidence and clarity of presentation.

Occult Roots of Religious Studies by Yves Mühlematter,Helmut Zander Pdf

The historiographers of religious studies have written the history of this discipline primarily as a rationalization of ideological, most prominently theological and phenomenological ideas: first through the establishment of comparative, philological and sociological methods and secondly through the demand for intentional neutrality. This interpretation caused important roots in occult-esoteric traditions to be repressed. This process of “purification” (Latour) is not to be equated with the origin of the academic studies. De facto, the elimination of idealistic theories took time and only happened later. One example concerning the early entanglement is Tibetology, where many researchers and respected chair holders were influenced by theosophical ideas or were even members of the Theosophical Society. Similarly, the emergence of comparatistics cannot be understood without taking into account perennialist ideas of esoteric provenance, which hold that all religions have a common origin. In this perspective, it is not only the history of religious studies which must be revisited, but also the partial shaping of religious studies by these traditions, insofar as it saw itself as a counter-model to occult ideas.
