Inquiry-Based Learning - Undergraduate Research by Harald A. Mieg Pdf

This open access book provides a systematic overview of experiences with Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and undergraduate research (UR) in German universities, covering both research universities (Universitäten) and universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen). Divided into three parts, the book starts with the principles and common practices of IBL/UR at all universities. Part Two discusses the implementation of IBL/UR for twenty-one individual disciplines, ranging from architecture to theology. Part Three discusses the potential of IBL/UR in relation to several topics including diversity, digitalisation, different forms of universities, and the national job market. The book summarises the project of the German network of UR, comprising approximately 50 universities, and results of a national initiative called Qualitätspakt Lehre which is intended to improve teaching at German universities. Today IBL and UR are essential parts of high-impact education strategies for universities around the world. In his university reform plans of the early 19th century, Wilhelm von Humboldt introduced Inquiry-Based Teaching and Learning as the core principle of the modern research university in Germany, as well as worldwide. IBL was re-discovered in the German university reform initiatives of the 1960s. Since then, IBL has been applied in teachers' education in German universities. The book presents IBL/UR experience as complementary to what is usually presented in English-speaking academia. In Germany, IBL/UR is applied broadly throughout the social sciences and planning, but not in the core sciences, whereas in the US undergraduate research is common in the sciences but less so in the social sciences. Moreover, in Germany, IBL/UR is often linked to applied and community-oriented research — something that is just emerging in the US.

Decision-Making in Midwifery Practice by Maureen D. Raynor,Jayne E. Marshall,Amanda Sullivan Pdf

The book looks at a broad perspective of decision making and each chapter focuses on a specific aspect related to making crucial decisions. Following an initial introduction the book explores the concept of autonomy and the many factors that influence autonomous practise. The role of knowledge in decision making, using evidence to inform decisions, as well as different approaches to decision making are also examined - including the traditional or rational approach, decision analysis and the development of professional judgement. Dilemmas arise when decisions are made and therefore ethical decision making is an important component of this book. Management decisions may be different from those related to giving specific care to women, hence one chapter focuses on making management decisions. Emphasis is also placed on the role of the midwife in helping women make their own decisions, the role of reflection in enhancing the decisions midwives make and the support midwives can receive from their Supervisor of Midwives. Flowcharts explain and facilitate the decision-making process. A very practical approach to decision-making in midwifery, with contributions from midwives who have considerable experience in this area Provides guidelines on how to achieve successful autonomous midwifery practice, enabling theory to be effectively applied to practice Includes coverage of management roles and decision-making as well as clinical scenarios, offering frameworks and flowcharts to guide the inexperienced Suggests different approaches to making difficult decisions

How to Nurse by John Doane,Gweneth Hartrick Doane,Colleen Varcoe Pdf

"How to Nurse: Relational Inquiry in Action, 2nd edition offers students a theoretically sound, research-informed way of navigating the complexities of real-life nursing practice. Research shows there is a gap between education and practice, and this book helps fill that gap by giving students a framework-a relational inquiry framework- to help prepare them to be safe, competent, ethical providers. Highlighting examples from acute and community-based settings throughout all chapters, the authors show the link of their relational inquiry approach and how it can be implemented in practice. Because students can't be exposed to every situation they might encounter as professionals and because situations might evolve that might not even seem conceivable today, the authors avoid the pitfall of other texts that are limited to authoritative, "how-to" practice prescriptions. Instead, the authors foster critical thinking skills and encourage students to explore the complexities of everyday nursing through "Try It Out" and "This Week in Practice" learning activities"--
