The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba,Bryan Mealer Pdf

Now a Netflix film starring and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, this is a gripping memoir of survival and perseverance about the heroic young inventor who brought electricity to his Malawian village. When a terrible drought struck William Kamkwamba's tiny village in Malawi, his family lost all of the season's crops, leaving them with nothing to eat and nothing to sell. William began to explore science books in his village library, looking for a solution. There, he came up with the idea that would change his family's life forever: he could build a windmill. Made out of scrap metal and old bicycle parts, William's windmill brought electricity to his home and helped his family pump the water they needed to farm the land. Retold for a younger audience, this exciting memoir shows how, even in a desperate situation, one boy's brilliant idea can light up the world. Complete with photographs, illustrations, and an epilogue that will bring readers up to date on William's story, this is the perfect edition to read and share with the whole family.

Eye of the Storm by Robert Pobi Pdf

Now in mass market, Rob Pobi’s “heartbreaking and chilling” (Andrew Pyper) debut novel is “a Sixth Sense-like take on Thomas Harris in his prime” (National Post). A storm is coming... As a massive hurricane approaches the Eastern Seaboard, FBI consultant Jake Cole returns to Montauk to care for his father, a formerly brilliant painter deep in the grip of Alzheimer’s. But soon after his arrival, another malevolent force descends on the community—a monstrous serial killer—and a brutal double homicide teaches Jake that even though he has forgotten about the past, it has not yet forgotten about him. As the killer goes after everything Jake holds sacred, he is forced to balance his efforts between protecting his family and finding a psychopath who seems as unstoppable as the storm hammering the community. Pinned between the two forces of nature, Jake learns that old secrets never really die. Published in twelve countries, Rob Pobi’s brilliant debut thriller, formerly published as Bloodman, is twisted, gritty, and utterly compelling.

Forbidden Games and Video Poems by Yang Mu,Lo Ch'ing Pdf

Two contemporary poets from Taiwan, Yang Mu (pen name for Wang Ching-hsien, b. 1940) and Lo Ch’ing (pen name for Lo Ch’ing-che, b. 1948), are represented in this bilingual edition of Chinese poetry ranging from the romantic to the postmodern. Both poets were involved in the selection of poems for this volume, the first edition in any language of their selected work. Their backgrounds, literary styles, and professional lifes are profiled and compared by translator Joseph R. Allen in critical essays that show how Yang and Lo represent basic directions in modern Chinese poetics and how they have contributed to the definition of modernism and postmodernism in China. The book’s organization reflects each poet’s method of composition. Yang’s poems are chronologically arrangd, as his poetry tends to describe a narrative line that closely parallels his own biography. Lo’s poems, which explore a world of concept and metaphor, are grouped by theme. Although each poet has a range of poetic voices, Yang’s work can be considered the peak of high modernism in Chinese poetry, while Lo’s more problematic work suggests the direction of new explorations in the art. In this way the two poets are mutually illuminating. Each group of poems is prefaced by an “illustration” that draws from another side of the poet’s intellectual life. For Yang, who is a professor of comparative literature at the University of Washington, these are excerpts from his academic work (written under the name C.H. Wang) in English. The poems by Lo, a well-known painter living in Taiwan, are illustrated by five of his own ink paintings.

Sensing Law by Sheryl Hamilton,Diana Majury,Dawn Moore,Neil Sargent,Christiane Wilke Pdf

A rich collection of interdisciplinary essays, this book explores the question: what is to be found at the intersection of the sensorium and law’s empire? Examining the problem of how legal rationalities try to grasp what can only be sensed through the body, these essays problematize the Cartesian framework that has long separated the mind from the body, reason from feeling and the human from the animal. In doing so, they consider how the sensorium can operate, variously, as a tool of power or as a means of countering the exercise of regulatory force. The senses, it is argued, operate as a vector for the implication of subjects in legal webs, but also as a powerful site of resistance to legal definition and determination. From the sensorium of animals to technologically mediated perception, the ways in which the law senses and the ways in which senses are brought before the law invite a questioning of the categories of liberal humanism. And, as this volume demonstrates, this questioning opens up the both interesting and important possibility of imagining other sensual subjectivities.
