This book is an in-depth study of how heroes of peace use compassion inthe face of adversity. It is the research of how special heroes successfullyaddress hatred with peace, how their calmness softens the chaos surround-ing them, and why they always maintain the dignity of their adversariesthroughout their enemies' defeat and recovery. For example, an inspirationalletter sent from a combat pilot to his mother after a fearsome air battle inWWII, incarcerated freedom fighters secretly confronting brutal dictatorsfrom their prison cells, and a child-who launched from his elementaryschool classroom-a compassionate humanitarian campaign that savedthousands of lives. I obtained more unknown information from personalinterviews with many heroes of peace, from a heroic survivor of a lib-eration army in Nicaragua, from a prior child soldier in Cameroon, andfrom a revolutionary who fought the suppressive Apartheid governmentin South Africa. These incredible quests are true, often appearing surre-al, and interlace this book with unbelievable ventures rarely found in anymedia other than from the personal exploits of the heroes themselves. Theinspiring values these heroes employed to succeed in their noble pursuitsare most remarkable.I researched, discovered, and taught these heroic values in collegecourses for over a decade, and my students and I studied extensively theinspiring values used by magnificent people to guide their critical deci-sions. We did not study these same heroes when they were not performingat their best. This book is not a study of perfect heroes of peace-there are none. This book is a study of the values and thought processes of(a) magnificent world heroes of peace (b) when they were performing attheir best-what wonderful and proven examples of outstanding humanconduct to study.I was interested in HOW heroes of peace achieved their remarkabledeeds instead of what they accomplished.
