In The Shadow of Sugarloaf by Jack James Pdf

Life in Arkoal, Arkansas, is centered around coal mining in the early 1900s. Young boys and men are expected to work in the Piney Creek mine to provide for their families. The danger in the deep mine shafts has taken the lives of many over the years. Mine bosses do little to ensure the safety of the workers and care even less about what might happen to them, just as long as the mine stays working. With Sugarloaf Mountain in the background, best friends Kenny, Davy, and Ned find or make adventures at school, church, and all around the small town in south Sebastian County. There is mischief to be made and mysteries to solve. With the threat of unionizing the coal mines, lives change quickly for everyone in Arkoal. Disaster, strikes, murders, and fighting turn this little-known town into front-page news, meaning that Kenny, Davy, and Ned have to grow up quickly in the wake.

Pioneers of Old Monocacy by Grace L. Tracey,John Philip Dern Pdf

This is a definitive account of the land and the people of Old Monocacy in early Frederick County, Maryland. The outgrowth of a project begun by Grace L. Tracey and completed by John P. Dern, it presents a detailed account of landholdings in that part of western Maryland that eventually became Frederick County. At the same time it provides a history of the inhabitants of the area, from the early traders and explorers to the farsighted investors and speculators, from the original Quaker settlers to the Germans of central Frederick County. In essence, the book has a dual focus. First it attempts to locate and describe the land of the early settlers. This is done by means of a superb series of plat maps, drawn to scale from original surveys and based both on certificates of survey and patents. These show, in precise configurations, the exact locations of the various grants and lots, the names of owners and occupiers, the dates of surveys and patents, and the names of contiguous land owners. Second, it identifies the early settlers and inhabitants of the area, carefully following them through deeds, wills, and inventories, judgment records, and rent rolls. Finally, in meticulously compiled appendices it provides a chronological list of surveys between 1721 and 1743; an alphabetical list of surveys, giving dates, page reference--text and maps--and patent references; a list of taxables for 1733-34; and a list of the early German settlers of Frederick County, showing their religion, their location, dates of arrival, and their earliest records in the county. Brazil by Michael Palin Pdf

Michael Palin, the No.1 bestselling author, explores an exotic country that is now a global superpower. Brazil is one of the four new global super powers with its vast natural resources and burgeoning industries. Half a continent in size and a potent mix of races, religions and cultures, of unexplored wildernesses and bustling modern cities, it is also one of the few countries Michael Palin has never fully travelled. His timely book and series take a closer look at a remarkable new force on the world scene. From the Venezuelan border and the forests of the Lost World, where he encounters the Yanomami tribe and their ongoing territorial war with the gold miners, Michael Palin explores this vast and disparate nation in his inimitable way. He journeys into the heart of the Amazon rainforest. He travels down the north-east coast to meet the descendants of African slaves with their vibrant culture of rituals, festivals and music. He visits the shanty towns of Rio and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. He goes to Sao Paolo, where the rich commute by helicopter. He travels south to meet German and Japanese communities, meets supermodels in the making and wealthy gauchos in the Pantanal before ending his journey at the spectacular Iguaçu Falls.

Wogan's Ireland by Terry Wogan Pdf

In a magical mix of the personal and the political, the humorous and the tragic, the historic and the modern, we follow Terry Wogan on his return to his native land. Terry left Ireland in the late 1960s, after a childhood in Limerick and early career in Dublin. In Wogan's Irelandwe see through Terry's eyes how the country has changed. He rediscovers its rugged coastline and the spectacular views he remembers from childhood holidays. He revisits old haunts, hooks up with long-lost friends, colleagues and fellow expats, enjoying the nostalgia evoked by these experiences. But he doesn't shy away from the more complicated responses that led him to seek his fortunes elsewhere. During the course of Wogan's Irelandhe also explains why he had to leave it all behind. Imbued with Terry's inimitable style - witty and urbane, relaxed yet engaging - this book stands as a fitting tribute not only to a beautiful, complex and contradictory nation, but to one of the BBC's longest-standing and most popular personalities.

Vamos a Brasil! by Mike Fox Pdf

This is the story of a visit to Brazil by Mike and his wife, Sylvia, in January 2008. Sylvia is a trained and experienced teacher; Mike is not, but he knows a smattering of Portuguese. They were invited to teach English in a mission school in the industrial city of Belo Horizonte, and the story covers their exploits and attempts to teach a lovable but very lively class of students from all over Brazil. Most of the action is set in and around Brazils fourth largest city, but they did board an eccentric train ride to the Portuguese colonial mining town of Ouro Preto. The icing on the cake was their last day spent in Rio and one of its favelas. They arrived in Brazil knowing no one, and they left having made a lot of friends.

America (Vol. 1-6) by Joel Cook Pdf

The object of this work is to give the busy reader in acceptable form such a comprehensive knowledge as he would like to have, of the geography, history, picturesque attractions, peculiarities, productions and most salient features of our great country. The intention has been to make the book not only a work of reference, but a work of art and of interest as well, and it is burdened neither with too much statistics nor too intricate prolixity of description. It covers the Continent of North America, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian Dominion and Alaska. It has been prepared mainly from notes specially taken by the author during many years of extended travel all over the United States and Canada.

Sacred Ecology by Fikret Berkes Pdf

Sacred Ecology examines bodies of knowledge held by indigenous and other rural peoples around the world, and asks how we can learn from this knowledge and ways of knowing. Berkes explores the importance of local and indigenous knowledge as a complement to scientific ecology, and its cultural and political significance for indigenous groups themselves. This third edition further develops the point that traditional knowledge as process, rather than as content, is what we should be examining. It has been updated with about 150 new references, and includes an extensive list of web resources through which instructors can access additional material and further illustrate many of the topics and themes in the book. Winner of the Ecological Society of America's 2014 Sustainability Science Award.
