An evaluation of proposed World Water Programme indicators for use in South Africa by Danny Walmsley,Tommie Havenga,Eberhard Braune,Chris Schmidt,Krishna Prasad,Barbara van Koppen Pdf

This present study forms part of this evaluation phase and makes use of South Africa as an African Continent case study to assess and provide feedback on the proposed WWAP indicators. The main objective of the study has been to evaluate the proposed WWAP indicators in terms of their relevance and practicality to South Africa. Carried out in collaboration with the South African Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, this has also provided an opportunity to assess the status of current indicators and reporting initiatives in South Africa, as well as to comment on the process by which indicators might be further developed and used.

A Financial Conditions Index for South Africa by Mr.Nombulelo Gumata,Nir Klein,Mr.Eliphas Ndou Pdf

The main purpose of this paper is to construct a financial conditions index (FCI) for South Africa. The analysis extracts the index by applying two alternative approaches (principal component analysis and Kalman filter), which identify an unobservable common factor from a group of external and domestic financial indicators. The alternative estimated FCIs, which share a similar trajectory over time, seem to have a powerful predictive information for the near-term GDP growth (up to four quarters), and they outperform the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) leading indicator as well as individual financial variables. Their recent dynamics suggest that following a strong recovery in late-2009 and 2010, reflecting in part domestic factors such as systematic reductions in the policy rate, the rebound in real economic activity, and a benign inflationary environment, the financial conditions have deteriorated in recent months, though not as sharply as in end-2008. Given their relatively high predictive power regarding GDP growth, a further deterioration may imply that economic activity is likely to slow in the period ahead.

Economic Indicators by Philip Mohr Pdf

The fourth edition of Economic Indicators is fundamentally revised, updated, and expanded. It covers the most recent comprehensive revisions of the national accounts in South Africa, the consumer price index, the producer price index, various labor market surveys, and government finance statistics. Each chapter contains more information than before, for example, on business cycles, money, credit and interest rates, budget deficits, foreign debt, units of measurement, as well as various technical aspects, such as the previous-year comparison error, data revisions, and the calculation of growth rates. A new section examines the impact of economic indicators on the financial markets, and a number of political and politico-economic indicators have been added. New segments include one on important international economic indicators, another on the indicators that are examined by the South African Reserve Bank's Monetary Policy Committee when deciding on interest rates, another on the Baltic Dry Index, and even one to prove that the experts can also sometimes get it wrong. All the data that are used to illustrate and explain the various indicators have been updated and, as always, a wealth of data on the South African economy is provided. The book is an indispensable reference source for a variety of professionals, including economists, financial analysts, accountants, lawyers, industrial relations specialists, brokers, dealers, political scientists, and development specialists. Last, but by no means least, the book is informative and accessible to interested lay people.

Monitoring Child Well-being by Andrew Dawes,Rachel Bray,Amelia Van der Merwe Pdf

Taking a rights-based approach, this comprehensive study develops a conceptual framework and a definitive set of holistic indicators for monitoring the well-being of children in South Africa. Taking cues from the child-rights focus of the South African constitution, it is made clear that it is not just the state of the children that is important to measure, but also the contexts within which the children grow and develop. Providing practical tools for policy makers to assess the effectiveness of child-based policies and interventions, this practical work addresses a wide range of domains--child poverty, HIV and AIDS, education, mental health and disability, abuse and neglect, the justice system, and children affected by the worst forms of labor.

Business Cycles in BRICS by Sergey Smirnov,Ataman Ozyildirim,Paulo Picchetti Pdf

This volume focuses on the analysis and measurement of business cycles in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). Divided into five parts, it begins with an overview of the main concepts and problems involved in monitoring and forecasting business cycles. Then it highlights the role of BRICS in the global economy and explores the interrelatedness of business cycles within BRICS. In turn, part two provides studies on the historical development of business cycles in the individual BRICS countries and describes the driving forces behind those cycles. Parts three and four present national business tendency surveys and composite cyclical indices for real-time monitoring and forecasting of various BRICS economies, while the final part discusses how the lessons learned in the BRICS countries can be used for the analysis of business cycles and their socio-political consequences in other emerging countries.
