As human beings, we are not immortal. Life comes with an expiration date and sooner or later we are all going to pass away, often without warning or time to prepare. To help prepare for the end of life, Rest in Peace is a pre-death planning guide; whether it be for your own demise or the death of someone whose end-of-life affairs you may need to attend to. Rest in Peace is a book everyone must have. It contains guidance and tools: For those who want (or need) to put their affairs in order before they die And for those who will need essential information in order to effectively deal with the consequences of a death in the family. One of the most important items in this planning guide is a comprehensiveworksheet for collecting vital, personal information that will greatly benefit your survivors. Rest in Peace contains templates of important documents that can serve as valuable tools to help you put your affairs in order before it's too late. These include: A Will Durable and Medical Powers of Attorney An Advance Directive And an Out-of-Hospital Do-Not-Resuscitate Order, all designed for easy understanding and completion. All templates are available on the web at www.confrontingdeath.com. By heeding the guidance and directions that Rest in Peace contains, you can help guarantee that your survivors are taken care of, know your wishes, and know what to do when you die. By putting your personal affairs in order and providing your survivors with essential information--including your wishes concerning the disposition of your possessions and your desires regarding the handling of your remains--you can greatly lessen the burden on those you leave behind.

War Is Not Inevitable by Henri Parens Pdf

In 1932 Einstein asked Freud, ‘Is there any way of delivering mankind from the menace of war?’ Freud answered that war is inevitable because humans have an instinct to self-destroy, a death instinct which we must externalize to survive. But nearly four decades of study of aggression reveal that rather than being an inborn drive, destructiveness is generated in us by experiences of excessive psychic pain. In War is Not Inevitable: On the Psychology of War and Aggression, Henri Parens argues that the death-instinct based model of aggression can neither be proved nor disproved as Freud’s answer is untestable. By contrast, the ‘multi-trends theory of aggression’ is provable and has greater heuristic value than does a death-instinct based model of aggression. When we look for causes for war we turn to history as well as national, ethnic, territorial, and or political issues, among many others, but we also tend to ignore the psychological factors that play a large role. Parens discusses such psychological factors that seem to lead large groups into conflict. Central among these are the psychodynamics of large-group narcissism. Interactional conditions stand out: hyper-narcissistic large-groups have, in history, caused much narcissistic injury to those they believe they are superior to. But this is commonly followed by the narcissistically injured group’s experiencing high level hostile destructiveness toward their injury-perpetrator which, in time, will compel them to revenge. Among groups that have been engaged in serial conflicts, wars have followed from this psychodynamic narcissism-based cyclicity. Parens details some of the psychodynamics that led from World War I to World War II and their respective aftermath, and he addresses how major factors that gave rise to these wars must, can, and have been counteracted. In doing so, Parens considers strategies by which civilization has and is constructively preventing wars, as well as the need for further innovative efforts to achieve that end.

The War That Ended Peace by Margaret MacMillan Pdf

The First World War followed a period of sustained peace in Europe during which people talked with confidence of prosperity, progress, and hope. But in 1914, Europe walked into a catastrophic conflict that killed millions, bled its economies dry, shook empires and societies to pieces, and fatally undermined Europe’s dominance of the world. It was a war that could have been avoided up to the last moment—so why did it happen? Beginning in the early nineteenth century and ending with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, award-winning historian Margaret Macmillan uncovers the huge political and technological changes, national decisions, and just as important, the small moments of human muddle and weakness that led Europe from peace to disaster. This masterful exploration of how Europe chose its path towards war will change and enrich how we see this defining moment in history.

Peace, Love & Liberty by Students for Liberty Pdf

"There is no such thing as being 'undecided' about war. It is a binary choice. If you re not for it, you have to be against it. The essays in this book offer evidence and arguments for peace. The writers advance peace not merely as a moral ideal or even a desirable goal, but as an eminently practical objective. Too often peace activists have thought it sufficient merely to call for peace and to denounce war, without investigating the economic, social, political, and psychological conditions of peace. They may oppose this or that war, without considering what causes wars--for example, fallacies about clashes of civilizations, economic conflict, protectionism, and the zero-sum worldview--and then addressing those causes. Peace is not an impractical fantasy, nor is it something for which one must sacrifice prosperity or progress or freedom. In fact, peace, freedom, prosperity, and progress go hand-in-hand. The essays in this book appeal to the mind. They are anchored in sound history, economic reality, empirical psychology, political science, and hard-headed logic, as well as art and the aesthetic imagination. If the heart is to be engaged on behalf of peace, it should be engaged through the mind."--page 4 of cover.

Peace Is... Inevitable by Michael Hall Pdf

This is a book of free verse poetry concerning the war-like times we live in and the solution of violence that is used almost on a casual basis. It doesn't have to be this way, we can aspire to other solutions to our international problems and Peace is...Inevitable if we truly believe it to be. We must educate our children and ourselves in the viability of nonviolent solutions and the pragmatic pursuit thereof or we face a continuation of death and destruction not just for us but for the future as well.

Too Poor for Peace? by Lael Brainard,Derek Chollet Pdf

Extreme poverty exhausts institutions, depletes resources, weakens leadership, and ultimately contributes to rising insecurity and conflict. Just as poverty begets insecurity, however, the reverse is also true. As the destabilizing effects of conflict settle in, civil institutions are undermined and poverty proliferates. Breaking this nexus between poverty and conflict is one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century. The authors of this compelling book—some of the most experienced practitioners from around the world—investigate the complex and dynamic relationship between poverty and insecurity, exploring possible agents for change. They bring the latest lessons and intellectual framework to bear in an examination of African leadership, the private sector, and American foreign aid as vehicles for improving economic conditions and security. Contributors include Colin Kahl (University of Minnesota),Vinca LaFleur (Vinca LaFleur Communications), Edward Miguel (University of California, Berkeley), Jane Nelson (Harvard University and Brookings), Anthony Nyong (University of Jos and the International Development Research Centre, Nairobi), Susan Rice (Brookings), Robert Rotberg (Harvard University and the World Peace Foundation), Marc Sommers (Tufts University), Hendrik Urdal (International Peace Research Institute), and Jennifer Windsor (Freedom House).
