Excerpt from The War Inevitable My dear Alexandra, said her mother gently, these scenes are childish, and you know that it is useless to rail against your destiny. His Majesty, for reasons best known to himself, has decided that your marriage to Prince Oscar is both desirable and necessary; and that being so, you would employ your time far better in preparations for your wedding than in unladylike exhibitions of temper. What Causes War? by Greg Cashman Pdf

Now in a thoroughly revised and updated edition, this classic text presents a comprehensive survey of the many alternative theories that attempt to explain the causes of interstate war. For each theory, Greg Cashman examines the arguments and counterarguments, considers the empirical evidence and counterevidence generated by social-science research, looks at historical applications of the theory, and discusses the theory’s implications for restraining international violence. Among the questions he explores are: Are humans aggressive by nature? Do individual differences among leaders matter? How might poor decision making procedures lead to war? Why do leaders engage in seemingly risky and irrational policies that end in war? Why do states with internal conflicts seem to become entangled in wars with their neighbors? What roles do nationalism and ethnicity play in international conflict? What kinds of countries are most likely to become involved in war? Why have certain pairs of countries been particularly war-prone over the centuries? Can strong states deter war? Can we find any patterns in the way that war breaks out? How do balances of power or changes in balances of power make war more likely? Do social scientists currently have an answer to the question of what causes war? Cashman examines theories of war at the individual, substate, nation-state, dyadic, and international systems level of analysis. Written in a clear and accessible style, this interdisciplinary text will be essential reading for all students of international relations.

In the World War (Classic Reprint) by Czernin von Und Zu Chudenitz Pdf

Excerpt from In the World War IT is impossible in a small volume to write the history of the World War in even a partially exhaustive manner. Nor is that the Object of the book. Rather than to deal with generalities, its purpose is to describe separate events of which I had intimate knowledge, and individuals with whom I came into close contact and could, therefore, Observe closely; in fact, to furnish a series of snapshots of the great drama. By this means the following pages may possibly pre sent a conception of the war as a whole, which may, nevertheless, differ in many respects from the hitherto recorded, and possibly faulty, history of the war. Every one regards people and events from his own point of View; it is inevitable. In my book, I speak of men with whom I was in Close touch; of others who crossed my path without leaving any personal im pression on me; and finally, of men with whom I was Often in grave dispute. I endeavor to judge of them all in Objective fashion, but I have to describe people and things as I saw them. Wherever the description appears to be at fault, the reason will not be due to a prematurely formed opinion, but rather, probably, to a prevailing lack Of the capacity for judging. Not everything could be revealed. Much was not explained, although it could have been. Too short a period still separates us from those events to justify the lifting of the veil from all that happened. But what remains unspoken can in no way change the whole picture which I describe exactly as imprinted on my mind. The Allure of Battle by Cathal Nolan Pdf

History has tended to measure war's winners and losers in terms of its major engagements, battles in which the result was so clear-cut that they could be considered "decisive." Cannae, Konigsberg, Austerlitz, Midway, Agincourt-all resonate in the literature of war and in our imaginations as tide-turning. But these legendary battles may or may not have determined the final outcome of the wars in which they were fought. Nor has the "genius" of the so-called Great Captains - from Alexander the Great to Frederick the Great and Napoleon - play a major role. Wars are decided in other ways. Cathal J. Nolan's The Allure of Battle systematically and engrossingly examines the great battles, tracing what he calls "short-war thinking," the hope that victory might be swift and wars brief. As he proves persuasively, however, such has almost never been the case. Even the major engagements have mainly contributed to victory or defeat by accelerating the erosion of the other side's defences. Massive conflicts, the so-called "people's wars," beginning with Napoleon and continuing until 1945, have consisted of and been determined by prolonged stalemate and attrition, industrial wars in which the determining factor has been not military but matériel. Nolan's masterful book places battles squarely and mercilessly within the context of the wider conflict in which they took place. In the process it help corrects a distorted view of battle's role in war, replacing popular images of the "battles of annihilation" with somber appreciation of the commitments and human sacrifices made throughout centuries of war particularly among the Great Powers. Accessible, provocative, exhaustive, and illuminating, The Allure of Battle will spark fresh debate about the history and conduct of warfare.

The Possible Peace by Roland Hugins Pdf

Excerpt from The Possible Peace: A Forecast of World Politics, After the Great War The world war approaches to an end. I do not mean to say that its end in actual time is near; of that we know nothing; it may last a month more, or a year or three years. But mentally we - America and the world - are in the final stage of the struggle. We are thinking principally of the problems of the settlement. We have passed through the early stages of astonishment, horror and despair. We have emerged from the long months wherein our nervous force was exhausted in hope, expectancy and anger. We are war-weary - however much some of us may attempt to cloak our weariness behind declarations of our tenacity and our invincibility. We are prepared to maintain the present cruel tension as long as necessary; but we realize that the coming of peace, if not imminent, is at least inevitable within the discernible future. And our best thoughts are directed toward that peace we climb so painfully to reach. What kind of a peace shall it be? Magna Carta by David Starkey Pdf

'A soaring account of the months that transformed a messy feudal squabble into Magna Carta...his crisp storytelling, based around short chapters and rolling rhetoric, is extremely entertaining.' Dan Jones, Mail on Sunday 'I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Good history is descriptive, narrative and analytical. This is good history.' Gerard DeGroot, The Times At Runnymede, on the banks of the River Thames, on 15 June 1215, the seal of King John was attached to the Magna Carta, and peace descended upon the land. Or that's what successive generations have believed. But is it true? And have we been persuaded (or persuaded ourselves) that the events of 15 June 1215 not only ended a civil war between the king and the barons but - as if by magic - established a British constitution beloved and copied throughout the world? Often viewed as a victory for the people over the monarchy and a cornerstone of democracy, the true significance of Magna Carta is misunderstood and misrepresented. In Magna Carta: The True Story Behind the Charter, David Starkey paints a vivid portrait of the years 1215-1225, ten revolutionary years of huge significance that produced not one but four charters. Peopled by colourful historical figures - John, the boy-king Henry, Pope Innocent III, Archbishop Stephen Langton, William Marshal - Starkey tells a story of treachery and idealism, politics and peace-making that is surprising and enthralling. Informative, entertaining and controversial, Magna Carta: The True Story Behind the Charter challenges centuries of myth-making to demonstrate how important it is we understand the true significance of that day beside the Thames, over eight hundred years ago.

The World War and What Was Behind It by L. P. Benezet Pdf

Excerpt from The World War and What Was Behind It: Or the Story of the Map of Europe This little volume is the result of the interest shown by pupils, teachers, and the general public in a. Series of talks on the causes of the great European war which were given by the author in the fall of 1914. The audiences were widely different in character. They included pupils of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, students in high school and normal school, teachers in the public schools, an association of business men, and a convention of boards of education. In every case, the same sentiment was voiced: If there were only some book which would give us these facts in simple language and illustrate them by maps and charts as you have done! After searching the market for a book of this sort without success, the author deter mined to put the subject of his talks into manuscript form. It has been his aim to write in a style which is well within the comprehension of the children in the upper grades and yet is not too juvenile for adult readers. The book deals with the remarkable sequence of events in Europe which made the great war inevitable. Facts are revealed which, so far as the author knows, have not been published in any history to date; facts which had the strongest possible bearing on the outbreak of the war.
