Integrating Multidisciplinary Treatment for Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma by Rana R. McKay,Eric A. Singer Pdf

The field of kidney cancer has dramatically evolved over the past several years due to notable advances. Most importantly, systemic treatment options have expanded to include combination regimens for advanced disease and expansion of treatment options in the adjuvant setting. Additionally, surgical management has evolved towards nephron-sparing and minimally invasive approaches for treatment of localized disease; the role of surgery and focal therapy are changing for patients with advanced disease. While kidney cancer is a common malignancy in both men and women worldwide, mortality has improved over time given advancements in modern oncology. This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of the field, and serves as a valuable resource for clinicians, surgeons and researchers with an interest in kidney cancer. The book reviews new data about systemic treatment options for patients with advanced disease including strategies in the treatment naïve and post frontline setting. It covers new data regarding perioperative and adjuvant treatments for patients with localized disease and will highlight novel targets and treatments under development. Integration of surgery and systemic therapy through cytoreductive and consolidative approaches has yielded provocative data that promises to further advance the field, and major advances in this domain will also be discussed. Additionally, the book discusses the evolving role of alternative focal approaches including radiation therapy for patients with advanced disease. This text serves as a very useful resource for physicians and researchers dealing with and interested in this challenging malignancy. Specifically, urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, basic science and translational researchers with interest in RCC, fellows in urologic oncology, upper level residents training in urology and medical oncology, and pharmaceutical partners interested in RCC will benefit most significantly. Integrating Multidisciplinary Treatment for Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma will provide a concise yet comprehensive summary of strategies for sequencing therapies that will help guide patient care and stimulate investigative efforts.

Onco-Nephrology E-Book by Kevin W. Finkel,Mark Anthony Perazella,Eric P Cohen Pdf

Kidney disease and cancer are frequent comorbidities that require specialized knowledge and expertise from both the nephrologist and the oncologist. Written by three pioneers in this growing subspecialty, Onco-Nephrology provides authoritative, definitive coverage of the mechanism and management of these two life-threatening diseases. This unique, single-volume resource covers current protocols and recommends management therapies to arrest kidney failure and allow oncologic treatments to continue and succeed. Addresses acute and chronic kidney diseases that develop from a variety of cancers. This includes direct kidney injury from the malignancy, paraneoplastic effects of the cancer, and various cancer agents used to treat the malignancy. Discusses key issues regarding kidney disease in patients with cancer, including conventional chemotherapeutic regimens and new novel therapies (targeted agents and immunotherapies) or the malignancies themselves that may promote kidney injury; patients with chronic kidney disease who acquire cancer unrelated to renal failure; and kidney transplantation, which has been shown to carry an increased risk of cancer. Contains dedicated chapters for each class of the conventional chemotherapeutic agents, targeted cancer agents, and cancer immunotherapies including the basic science, pathogenic mechanisms of injury, clinical manifestations, and treatment. Includes special chapters devoted to the individual classes of chemotherapies that relate to kidney disease for quick reference. Discusses increasingly complex problems due to more numerous and specialized anti-cancer drugs, as well as increased survival rates for both cancer and renal failure requiring long-term patient care. Covers anti-VEGF (antivascular endothelial growth factor) agents and cancer immunotherapies – treatments that are being recognized for adverse kidney effects. Utilizes a clear, logical format based on the ASN Core Curriculum for Onco-Nephrology, making this reference an excellent tool for board review, as well as a practical resource in daily practice.

Nephron-Sparing Surgery by Krishna Sasidharan,Mark Soloway Pdf

Despite the rising popularity of the minimally invasive laparoscopic option, open nephron-sparing surgery is still seen by many experts as the 'gold standard' for open surgery for kidney tumors and should remain the first choice for many patients. This challenges the idea that less-invasive therapies are always more desirable than open surgery. Whi

Palliative Care in Oncology by Bernd Alt-Epping,Friedemann Nauck Pdf

Palliative care provides comprehensive support for severely affected patients with any life-limiting or life-threatening diagnosis. To do this effectively, it requires a disease-specific approach as the patients’ needs and clinical context will vary depending on the underlying diagnosis. Experts in the field of palliative care and oncology describe in detail the needs of patients with advanced cancer in comparison to those with non-cancer disease and also identify the requirements of patients with different cancer entities. Basic principles of symptom control are explained, with careful attention to therapy for pain associated with either the cancer or its treatment and to symptom-guided antineoplastic therapy. Complex therapeutic strategies for palliative cancer patients are highlighted that involve both cancer- and symptom-directed options and address a range of therapeutic aims. Issues relating to drug use in palliative cancer care are fully explored, and a separate section is devoted to care in the final phase. A range of organizational and policy issues are also discussed, and the book concludes by considering likely future developments in palliative care for cancer patients. Palliative Care in Oncology will be of particular interest to palliative care physicians who are interested in broadening the scope of their disease-specific knowledge, as well as to oncologists who wish to learn more about modern palliative care concepts relevant to their day-to-day work with cancer patients.

Urologic Oncology by Kelly L. Stratton,Alicia K. Morgans Pdf

Urologists and medical oncologists have witnessed a rapid growth in systemic therapeutic options for treating genitourinary malignancies that increasingly integrates radiation therapy to primary cancers, nodal beds, and even metastatic sites. The culmination of these advances has been the creation of multidisciplinary teams that expertly provide comprehensive care to patients with urologic cancers. This book provides the framework to create such a multidisciplinary clinical team focused on the treatment of urologic malignancies with representation from urologists, medical oncologists, and additional specialists who work together to provide optimal team-based care. The book integrates advanced systemic therapeutics including immune-based and targeted therapies. Readers gain a better understanding of the benefit of multidisciplinary co-management through specific examples such as hormone sensitive metastatic prostate cancer, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for muscle invasive bladder cancer, and immunotherapy approaches to advanced bladder and kidney cancer. The book also discusses the integration of genomic tumor characterization and personalized medicine into surgical planning, tumor biopsies, and chemo-immunotherapy selection, emphasizing the expansion of new therapeutics for urologic malignancies and the changing definitions of disease progression. Urologic Oncology: Multidisciplinary Care for Patients is a comprehensive resource for urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, genetic counselors, fellows in urologic oncology and medical oncology, residents in urology and radiation oncology, advanced practice providers, practice managers, and pharmaceutical representatives.

Perioperative Chemotherapy by U. Metzger,F. Largiader,H.-J. Senn Pdf

One reason for failure to cure solid tumors by surgery appears to be the impossibility of controlling metastases that are present but latent at the time of operation. This failure is a common clinical experience with aggressive neoplasms. but it is not always appreciated in tumors with longer survival times. e. g .• breast and colon cancer. In addition. recent evidence indicates that after resection of a primary tumor micrometas tases from it might be enhanced by suppression of immune and reticu loendothelial functions of the host. Other factors, such as increase of coagulability and stress in the perioperative period, can also promote tumor growth. The development of new metastases might be facilitated by cells forced into the circulation during operative manipulations. Such events could be important for the outcome of treatment and it is suggested that preventive measures should be directed to this systemic component of solid tumors. Radical surgery can reduce the number of tumor cells to a subclinical 3 6 stage (10 to 10 cells) in which chemotherapy might be more effective than in advanced stages. Chemotherapy, on the other hand, might aggravate the surgical morbidity by influencing the wound healing pro cess, by decreasing the immune response, and/or by toxicity to the bone marrow and to the gastrointestinal tract, for example.

Management of Soft Tissue Sarcoma by Murray F. Brennan,Cristina R. Antonescu,Kaled M. Alektiar,Robert G. Maki Pdf

Management of Soft Tissue Sarcoma, 2nd Edition provides the most comprehensive analysis of demographics and natural history currently available for these lesions, based on the authors’ experience with over 10,000 patients. Sections regarding radiation therapy not found in the previous text have been expanded, as have updates on molecular characteristics of sarcomas and chemotherapy studies published since the prior edition. Clinical and molecular diagnoses are addressed, and tumor histopathology is employed as the basis of treatment recommendations including surgery, radiation and systemic therapy. This is the first book to provide specific chemotherapy opinions for every sarcoma subtype. Written by four world-renowned experts, this book gives a practical, up-to-date approach to managing the many subtypes of adult soft tissue sarcoma. Reviews from the first edition: “This is an impressive book. Written by a surgeon, a pathologist and an oncologist, the book draws heavily on the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center soft tissue sarcoma (STS) database. ... it is a book that should be in the library of any sarcoma unit and will appeal to the sub-specialist in Orthopaedic Oncology.” (Robert U. Ashford, European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology, Vol. 24, 2014) “The book is laid out in 27 chapters, with an impressive inclusion of a wide array of sarcoma histology. One of the real strengths of the book is the quality and number of images, figures, tables, and graphs. ... The overall outline of the text is well done. ... This book is a unique and important addition to the sarcoma literature. ... this edtion should find itself on every medical oncologist’s bookshelf ... .” (Larry C. Daugherty and Sanjay P. Bagaria, Journal of Radiation Oncology, Vol. 3, 2014)
