Education systems and inequalities by Hadjar, Andreas,Gross, Christiane Pdf

How do education systems shape educational inequalities and differences in educational outcomes? And how do advantages and disadvantages in educational attainment translate into privileges and shortcomings in labour market and general life chances? Education systems and inequalities compares different education systems and their impact on creating and sustaining social inequalities. The book considers key questions such as how education systems impact educational inequalities along such variables as social origin, gender, ethnicity, migration background or ability and what social mechanisms are behind the links between education system and educational inequalities and provides vital evidence to inform debates in policy and reform.

Learning From Others by Diane Shorrocks-Taylor,Edgar W. Jenkins Pdf

Diane Shorrocks-Taylor School of Education, University of Leeds,UK In September 1998, a conference was held at the University of Leeds entitled ‘International comparisons of pupil performance: issues and policy’. It was arranged by two groups within the School of Education at the University, the newly formed Assessment and Evaluation Unit and the Centre for Studies in Science and Mathematics Education. Thejoint interest in international comparisons of performance had itself arisen from earlier involvement in a follow-up study of the 1995 TIMSS work in England, reported in a later chapter in this book, in which the TIMSS assessment outcomes were studied alongside the outcomes from the National Curriculum testing programme in England. Some of the results of this investigation had proved both interesting and challenging so the decision was made to promote wider discussion of some key issues by inviting contributors from all over the world to a meeting the major aims of which were to promote an exploration of : - the theoretical foundations of international comparative studies of student performance; - the practical problems of carrying out such studies; - the appropriateness of the assessment models and approaches used in international comparisons; - the role of international comparative studies in raising standards of student performance; - and how international studies affect the shaping of national policy on education.

Comparing U.S. Students to Their International Peers by Erica M. Chase Pdf

Since the 1960's, the United States has participated actively in international projects that are designed to provide key information about the performance of the U.S. education system relative to education systems in other countries. With the long-term growth in the trade of goods and services in the global economy, policymakers have turned to international comparisons to assess how well national systems of education are performing. These comparisons shed light on a host of issues, including access to education, equity of resources, and outcomes such as education attainment and performance on standardised tests. This book provides the opportunity to compare different aspects of countries' education systems, assess these systems' performance, and identify potential strategies to improve student achievement and system outputs.

Apples and Oranges in the Flat World by Jane V. Wellman Pdf

This paper is designed to be a layperson's primer on sources for and factors to consider in making sense of comparative performance measures of postsecondary education. It is not meant to present a comprehensive discussion about all aspects of international comparisons, nor does this paper diagnose the state of U.S. postsecondary performance in the world. The material presented here is designed to give a short overview of some major headlines, with information about the issues underlying several of the measures. The report discusses factors to consider in making sense of international comparisons, including data sources, definitions, and differences in degree or certificate structures and classification systems. Some of the more commonly cited indicators are presented, in the categories of educational performance (that is, measures by enrolment, retention, and attainment data); production of scientists and engineers; finances; spending on science and technology; student mobility and international enrolments; and international rankings of institutions. The report suggests questions to ask when working with the data and includes a listing of some of the major sources of international comparative data. [p.vii, ed].

Learning from Comparing: new directions in comparative education research by Robin Alexander,Patricia Broadfoot,David Phillips Pdf

'Learning from Comparing' is a major two-volume study which reassesses the contribution of comparative educational research and theory to our understanding of contemporary educational problems and to our capacity to solve them. At a time when educational research is under attack on the grounds of ‘bias’ and ‘irrelevance’, and under pressure to address only those questions which are acceptable politically (as good a definition of bias as any), this is a serious attempt to bridge the worlds of research, policy and practice. The editors have put together a collection – in terms of both perspective and nationality – which ensures contrasting viewpoints on each topic.
