International Perspectives on Child and Adolescent Mental Health by N. Singh,Dee Pang,A. Singh Pdf

There has been a major shift in the way we conceptualize and provide services to children and adolescents with mental health needs. We are moving away from the traditional disorder-oriented model of treatment to a child-centered, family-focused service delivery system that mandates mental health services in the context of the child's family and social ecology. This new system of care has spawned many variations of the model, including wraparound services, multisystemic treatment (MST), futures planning, and person-centred planning. As systems of care are different across countries and cultures, it is imperative that we share our knowledge and make explicit the lessons we have learned in our attempts to provide services to children and adolescents which focus on improving their quality of life rather than merely treating their psychiatric disorders and psychological problems. There is an urgent need to evaluate the various treatments being offered to children and adolescents with mental health needs. Empirical date on outcomes will determine the funding and delivery of services. As such, the latest research on treatment outcomes needs to be disseminated so that new and validated treatment methods can be implemented rapidly.

Adolescence and Sexuality by Joav Merrick,Ariel Tenenbaum,Hatim A. Omar Pdf

Human sexuality involves sexual attraction to another person, which for the most part is to the opposite sex (heterosexuality), some to the same sex (homosexuality) or some having both (bisexuality) or not being attracted to anyone in a sexual manner (asexuality). Human sexuality is determined by many factors, like cultural, political, legal and philosophical aspects of life, but also morality, ethics, theology, spirituality and religion. Sexuality is as old as mankind and interest in sexual activity is very much related to the onset of puberty and the period of schooling. In this book, we have gathered papers from around the world in order to discuss issues of sexuality from an international perspective.

Global Views of Adolescence by Devin G. Thornburg Pdf

This book addresses what teachers and school leaders from a dozen countries see as the social and emotional strengths, interests and needs of adolescents in their schools and communities; how they innovate their programs and practices to respond to their students’ lives. The book also describes how educators themselves benefit from social and emotional supports to be responsive. Rather than assume that there are universal themes in adolescents’ lives, the book is intended to illuminate the local, contextual, and powerful insights of educators daily working with students. In many intentional respects, each serves as an action research study with an effort to better the process and outcomes of their students’ growth and learning as well as to enrich the classroom. The chapters are organized by themes, ranging from challenges adolescents face in that particular locale to curriculum work that is project-based, transdisciplinary, and tied to the communities where the adolescents live. ‘The voices of adolescents, particularly with regard to their social and emotional development have been neglected in the literature. Thus, we know very little about their feelings and personal experiences as they progress through their schooling. A book such as this will be beneficial in terms of providing a contribution to this field, thereby increasing our understanding of the issues faced by adolescents across countries and cultures.’ Peggy L. Anderson, Ph.D., Metropolitan State University of Denver ‘The outstanding strength of this book is quite precisely its international scope: here is an anthology that lives up to the claims made by its title. Anyone interested in either adolescent development or Social and Emotional Learning in real world as opposed to abstract settings will appreciate the breadth of experience described.’ Mokhtar El Maouhal, Laboratoire de Recherche sur les Langues et la Communication

Adolescence and Health by Joav Merrick Pdf

Think positive and not negative. For too long, the "deficiency" or "pathological" approach in understanding children and adolescents has been prevalent, but in recent years we have seen a greater interest in positive youth development programs with a shift from looking at the negative to turning the related programs and approach into something positive and highlighting the positive side of youth development. This has resulted in a focus on talents, strengths, interests and potential in order to facilitate a stronger and better youth development. Instead of viewing children and adolescents as "problems" or "issues" to be resolved, they are regarded as "resources" and "assets" to be developed. In particular, it is argued that it is important to nurture the developmental assets such as psychosocial skills in children and adolescents. The notion of positive youth development bears striking resemblance to the beliefs of Chinese medicine and holistic medicine, which maintains that when a person has inner strengths and talents, the chance of becoming ill will be reduced.

Understanding Early Adolescence by Felicien Martin Pdf

Adolescence is an important period in life in which a series of structural, physiological, hormonal and social changes take place. Some characteristics of this period are impulsive behavior, inadequate decision-making, and increased incidence of risky behaviors. For these reasons, Understanding Early Adolescence: Perspectives, Behavior and Gender Differences discusses how studying behavioral regulation and environmental adaptation skills is of great importance. The authors research developmental differences in effortful control, sensation seeking and risk-taking behavior between adolescents and young adults. Additionally, gender and socioeconomic status differences in all three variables were investigated.

Adolescent Psychology in Today's World by Michael J. Nakkula,Andrew J. Schneider-Muñoz Pdf

This groundbreaking three-volume set spotlights how conditions around the world are affecting the healthy development of adolescents in their respective environments, on all six continents. Continually unstable or perpetually poor economic conditions, globalization, and rapid technological change are just three of the forces affecting a group 1.2 billion strong today, a demographic poised to become our world leaders and catalysts in the not-too-distant future: the world's adolescents. Led by two editors who have been dedicated to studying adolescent development worldwide for decades, this novel collection of works from contributors in more than 40 countries emphasizes how possibilities for healthy mental and physical development are affected by the difficulties youths face in their countries and how these challenges have shaped, and are shaping, contemporary teenage life today. The set comprehensively addresses issues for adolescents across the globe, such as the day-to-day challenges of poverty, inadequate education, violence or war, disease, reproductive matters, globalization and technological challenges, and more, while also providing a strengths-based focus in the volumes, showing how and why some teenagers in each country have surmounted the challenges and forged stronger characters to better their worlds. These stories document more than personal victories, and their experiences matter to far more than the adolescents themselves. In its State of the World's Children 2011 report, UNICEF noted that the world community needs to turn its attention to adolescents in need, explaining that focusing on this large and potentially powerful group makes economic sense as well as being a necessary step in working towards achieving human justice. By addressing the risks, challenges, and strengths of teenagers as a group in countries worldwide, this work serves to break the cycle of poverty, violence, discrimination, and death for adolescents.
