Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean 2021 by Economic Commission Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean Pdf

This publication outlines the region's economic performance in 2020 and analyses trends in the early months of 2021, as well as the outlook for the rest of the year. It examines the external and domestic factors that have influenced the region's economic performance, analyses the characteristics of growth, prices and the labour market, and draws attention to some of the macroeconomic policy challenges of the prevailing external conditions, amid mounting uncertainty stemming mainly from political factors. It analyses the dynamics of investment and its determinants, with a view to identifying the different variables on which public policy can act to influence the trajectory of investment. This edition also analyses the impact of the crisis caused by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on the region's labour markets, with a comparison of historical trends, and particular emphasis placed on the disproportionate effect of the pandemic on female and youth employment.

Latin America’s Global Border System is the opening volume in the first collection of academic works devoted exclusively to borders and illegal markets in Latin America. This volume features expert discussions on border issues of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Italy, Mexico and Peru, as well as studies on illegal markets, cities, and gender as a first step to understanding the intricacies of the global border system of illegal markets and Latin America’s role in it. The book constitutes a valuable source of information on the geographic, economic, demographic, and social characteristics of the most important Latin American border regions, and their relation to global illegal markets, while also offering valuable insights into the ways illegal markets are organized in each country and how they connect across borders to create the global border system. This book will not only be a valuable resource for academics and students of international relations, security studies, border studies and contemporary Latin America, but will also prove relevant to national and international policy-makers devoted to foreign, security and development policies.

Sherwood Anderson's Pan-American Vision by Celia Catalina Esplugas Pdf

Based on an analysis of Sherwood Anderson's letters, this study explores the novelist's principal inspiration during his final years (1938-1941): his exposure to Latin America. Thematically arranged correspondence traces his positive reception in South America--a place he saw as a source of fresh ideas and publishing opportunities--his desire to promote cultural relations between the two Americas, and his legacy among Spanish-speaking readers. The author discusses the political and economic climates of mid-20th century South American nations, their emerging liberal ideologies and the concerns Latin American readers had regarding societal upheaval, urbanization and the inequities of capitalism--all vividly depicted in Anderson's works.

Latin America and the Shifting Sands of Globalization by Sean W. Burges Pdf

Latin America occupies an increasingly prominent position within the global political, economic and cultural consciousness, with intra-regional governance structures and multilateral processes now a key topic of interest to foreign policy and international business circles. It has become abundantly clear that outside of Latin America there is a poor understanding of how the shifting sands of regional power are impacting, not only on how regional countries fit into the global system, but also on how intra-regional relations are viewed and managed. The contributions to this collection investigate these issues, examining how changing global power dynamics are in turn impacting on national foreign policies and regional governance structures. The book focuses first and foremost on the Latin American view outwards, not the US or European view to the south. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Iberian and Latin American Research.

Latin American Unification by Salvador Rivera Pdf

This book investigates efforts to promote the political and economic unification of Latin America. Every generation in the region has known some effort toward these goals. There were four major stages. The first endeavors were undertaken by diplomats, the second by idealists, the third by technocrats and the fourth stage is now dominated by pro-unification political leaders. Efforts toward integration promote the economies and political stability of these countries—Latin Americans were among the first of the old “third world” people to advance such programs. The political unification of Latin America has been stymied by the political class but this trend is currently being reversed with the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR). The recent accession of Venezuela after a grueling political-ideological struggle (examined in the book) has spurred other countries to seek full membership in the group. It is now the third largest trade bloc in the world and is continuing to grow. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.
